75 gallon dark reef upgrade

I currently have a 33 gallon tank. I bought a 75 gallon custom built tank and sump from concepts ! Then a few hours after paying it off got a call from work laying me off because I wanted to do a upgrading course. Thanks boss! Not.

Slowly I been getting threw life and with all this time off I might as well start my tank. I'm bored

My tank is home on my spare bedroom floor. Went to get my sump today and realized its not going to fit in my car. Add expense 12 case of beer for a friend to get my sump sometime this week !

Now to get some money together , well that's easy cleaned out my closet and got rid of all my old gear.

Time to build a stand and my DIY landscape :)
Hopefully pictures of something coming soon.

Upgrade:
75 gallon , 44"x24"x20, coast to coast overflow 2 holes with two hole return
Sump, 44"x24"x16" with built in ato,

Cheers :)

My 33 Gallon salt water with a 20 gallon sump.
this tank was said to be built by concepts. i bought it second hand.
but then again.. a 33 gallon tank with half inch think glass lol.
had a very hard time with this tank because of the overflow blocking my flow.

Got all the wood I need to fit together a stand today.
And found out my tank is 48 in not 44
Was going to pick up a pump
Wondering if a mag 12 (1200gph) would be enough for my tank?

Also still considering black sand or a mix of black and white :)

From the look of the overflow, I am guessing you are doing a herbie right? If so, for a 75 gallon (mine is 70 gallon from Concept too but not that big of an overflow box), you would be expecting the herbie to run at around 400gph through the pipe (although this is an highly variable parameter). I use speedwave 690gph as my return; cranked up to full so probably throwing around 400 or less at the return in the tank. Some people want high flow through the sump, some don't. But I would say, since its a mag and cannot be controlled, 1200gph might be a bit overkill. Go for a DC pump. Easy on the electricity, less noise, controllable and costs same as other pumps.

Not sure what a herbie is . Sorry still noob . Priced a knew dc pump at 160 but my buddy's selling a mag 12 for 80. I could always gate valve it to slow it down. Also going to run a reactor off it . It going to be a money tight tank till further notice

darkreef 12-02-2013 04:33 AM

Any cheap returns that be fine for my tank ?

Since you have two holes in the overflow, there's gonna be two pipes (one almost at the height of the teeth and another around halfway in the overflow). The shorter pipe is going to be connected to a gate valve to control the flow through the pipe to make it silent while the drain will either remain dry or there will be a small trickle flowing through it (without the trickle, you might need occasional adjustments of the gate valve to keep the level of water in the overflow consistent). That's herbie. And yah, if you want to run a reactor, you are good with a 1200gph. And don't worry about being budget tight; you can definitely have a great tank without all the fancy stuffs. I am an international student so I know :) In the end, its all about how well YOU take care of the tank.

Glad to hear that :) Just make sure you don't fall for "you get what you pay for" hype (yes thats a marketing hype for me!!!!) and buy things that you "need" instead of paying for fanciness. Example: don't spend money on vortec but instead get a proper light for the tank

Hint: ATI sunpower!!!!!!!!
