Why are bubbles coming from everything
K so been having this problem awhile now and starting to think it might be the dry filter food I'm feeding. It's New life spectrum filter feeder food but it expires in November it says.
This happened after I was at a drift show yesterday. WORRIED!!!!! It has happened before and been a week it's been happening. Sponge is starting to get grey in colour so in thinking its toast now but not 100% and the issue needs resolving! Using tap water but started this weekend on using RO by doing a water change and now too off water too. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/08/27/udavy6y3.jpghttp://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/08/27/e8ysyjy2.jpg |
Film algae produces oxygen bubbles like this, its entirely natural for your tank. If you want them to disappear increase your flow.

Yea its film algae, and the photosynthesis releases oxygen. You are going to need o increase your flow fo sho. But the root of the problem is you got some excess nutrients. So switching to ro would help if your tap water has any phosphates or nitrates.
The air bubbles from the algae may get trapped in the sponge and cause a clog in their water ways, causing them to starve due to them being filter feeders. When i say more flow i generally mean more all around flow around your tank and not 1 giant power head blasting 1 area type of flow. Hope this helps |
Hahhahahaha! The power head is blowing the largest area in the tank and clashing with the flow I have behind the rocks. What il do is just remove the direction fitting on the power head and see if it helps... Hope the sand won't blow around too much.
I know the sponge isn't happy with the bubbles and I know the troubles air can cause. Just hope it survives. Ill do another water change today tho. |
If its an consolation I have been doing this 7+ years and I won't even attempt to keep Porifera, not an easy organism to keep happy by any means.
How long has your system been running for? As said its an indicator of higher nutrients. |
I e increased flow and ill keep this thread posted on the progress

Tap water=nutrients=problem.... |
My tank did that for awhile when I switched to LEDs, it seemed to settle down after a week or so. I never saw it again.

Alright. To update this topic the bubbles haven't subsided. I still have them. Not as large of bubbles but still have them growing everywhere. No coralline growth in the tank yet and the tanks about 4months old.
All coral are healthy and happy as hell and clam has finally settled itself and wide open so I don't know what's causing the bubbles anymore. Weekly to twice a week water changes. Small ones. Using corpells water |
I notice mine will have a few of those small bubbles from time to time but not to the extent you have. I don't think it is anything to be concerned with because I have seen them before over the years. I think mine were always either a new tank or an increase in lighting strength or time. I am curious of what actually causes it though.

No sense in getting all bent out of shape over it. It’s just O2 being produced in your tank by the algae and that’s beneficial to everything in your tank. Your daytime O2 saturation must be pretty high.
I get the same bubbles on my live rock during my daylight cycle, it’s not a huge deal. |
It's not good for sponge and I wanna have it in the display area :(
It's becoming less then it was at one point so I'm thinking its a cycle change and a lighting change that might trigger the change. Algae and everything adjusting to the tank. |
I've got that in a few spots as well and have for a while. I've got film algae on most of my rock and the spots higher up in the light produce bubbles all day. i can brush them off and they return pretty quick.
While the bubbles themselves shouldn't be an issue for most... nobody really wants all that algae. My yellow tang and tailspot might disagree tho... |
