Red Moon Tonight A rare event not seen in 372 years

Just incase you want to wake the kids up early to see a nice view of the moon.

* A lunar eclipse is expected in the early morning hours of Tuesday.
* The eclipse coincides with the mid-winter solstice.
* The event will make the moon appear pink or red.

The eclipse runs for three and a half hours, from 6:33 GMT to 10:01 GMT (1:33 a.m. EST to 5:01 a.m. EST), although the stage of total eclipse -- when the moon heads into the "umbra" cast by the Earth -- lasts from 7:41 to 8:53 GMT (2:41 a.m. EST to 3:53 a.m. EST).

Heres a clock to help.

Plus....
A minor meteor shower is expected to send a few shooting stars through the darkened sky during the height of the eclipse.

Uhmmm.....

The last total lunar eclipse visible from North America was on Feb. 21, 2008. The next one is due on April 15, 2014.

I don't know for sure where the 372 years came from... but this is from a news article in Edmonton

It's a lunar eclipse that is coinciding with winter solstice (shortest day/longest night) and that's the source of the 400-year-rarity of the event.

On another note, this means as of tomorrow that daylight starts getting longer. Of course we still have many many months yet of winter but hey it's something :)

I checked at least 3 times last night during the time period but it was clouded over my house everytime I went out. Bummer. Oh well, have at least seen some nice pictures of it, Tim, yours is awesome, thanks for sharing. :)
