This is gonna be one awesome build. Subsribed!
When you come over to the island for a visit let me know... I could certainly use your skillz in organizing all my wires and gadgets!

in my old shop I made a quick and dirty one to try it out. I just used a high torque stepper motor with a cam plate, ran a 1/2" rod the length of the cabinets, has a little "J" welded to the main rod at each door that would slide into a eye bolt, and I supported the rod every now and then with a set of sealed bearings that I pressed some pulley rings on to. was board at work and spent about 8 hour on the lathe making those. if you use an actuator, and a similar design make its a spring open or fail open or normally open, and actuate to close other wise if your power goes out your doors stay locked.

Thanks RR but I think the only way I am going to get to the island is on the bike cause the ferry cost are INSANE!!

What kind of locks are they? I dont want anything on the exterior to take away from the clean smooth look, thats why I am thinking of an internal actuator.

I thought of the power outage thing already, I have 2 large battery back ups going in the system & going to buy a couple more as well.

They are about the size of a loonie , but you would see them , n need one for every door, I'll post a pic in the morning....
Could be a plain B if they actuator is a pain in the butt...

sphelps 12-18-2013 04:27 AM

Why not just use regular child locks like the rest of us?

Both my grandsons under the age of 2 have already figured out hoe to get past these so they are useless in this house.

:faint2: damn if I had to buy enough of these for the tank and the new kitchen it would be almost $1000. Since the boys have figured out the other ones already they have also learned that if they go in the cupboards they might get a little paddle on the arse and neither of them like that idea. without a doubt 2 of the smartest little ankle bitters I have seen in a long time, oldest one even knows what screw driver to use on almost all the different screws.

Latch Electric Drawer deadbolt Cabinet Fail Secure Lock Free shipping

http://bit.ly/1i2ScrW

Do an eBay search and pick one with free shipping. I had found them for 10$ a piece when I got them

Hope this helps

The Grizz 12-19-2013 04:54 AM

This is the actual locks I want to use but dont know if I need to have a power supply for each lock or if I can just use one power supply.

Any advise Jeff?

Mmmm! Your right, but I don't remember spending that much on mine...only need one magnet and the latches are sold separate.
But, my magnet has a picture of a little bear on it...Huh.

I like these, especially the price. Almost the same idea as the ones Donald posted but at a much nicer price point. Going to stop while I'm up in Edmonton tomorrow & check them out. Even the wife want some for the new kitchen lower cabinets.

You need a constant power to the electric mag locks and something to interrupt that power to open them as for the latch style you add power to release

The Grizz 12-21-2013 06:12 AM

Stopped at Lee Valley today & picked up a box load of these latches, very cool, sleek & easy to install. I will snap a few better pics of one installed tomorrow.

roblarss 12-21-2013 06:15 AM

Awesome. Saw these about a year ago and have been waiting to try them out myself.

The Grizz 12-22-2013 06:32 AM

Ok so as promised here are some pics of the latches installed. Thanks for the tip Rob much easier locking solution.

Doors closed and locks engaged:

http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/x...pspqth59vk.jpg

Magnetic knob on the outside holding the lock tab in so the door can open:

http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/x...pstgcqh5xg.jpg

Now a neat feature, as you see in the first pic the red lever is down. If you hold the lock tab in and flip the red lever up it will hold the lock tab in so you can open & close the door with out the magnetic knob:

Still need to find the right spot for my Profilux 4 pump doser & get a VorTech Control module as well as a PLM-PWC expansion card to wireless control the GHL Mitra that I am going to put over the 60 gal cube.

The Grizz 01-01-2014 05:43 AM

Added some fans into the door that cover the drivers for my DC pumps to keep them cool and hopefully extend there life. Going to do the same with my LED drivers.

gregzz4 01-01-2014 08:27 AM

Good plan Greg

Holee crap that's a lot of pump drivers :surprise:

If you don't mind a suggestion for aesthetics, you could put mesh on the fans side of the door, between the fans and the door. Bug screen or something, and no screws on the outside

I know you've already drilled the holes, but you could still fill them in, or just rotate them and drill again ...

Unless you like the fan guards on the outside :noidea:

I used black fibreglass bug screen for mine

StirCrazy 01-01-2014 05:09 PM

Greg, can't quite tell from the picture but are the fans blowing in or out, or a mix? also is there any open space to let air in or out of the cabinet to make up for the fans?

what I have found is it is always better to use fans to suck the air out of the area you want cooled, and to set up the air intake so the fans basically pull the new air over the parts you want cooled.

I also try hide both intakes and exhausts especially if there is light in the cabinet as I don't want anything distracting the eye from the tank its self, and it may be me but light spillage drives me batty haha.

Steve

I don't mind the fan guards on the outside as its on the far end of the tank near the closet & you can't see them unless you go right around the corner of the tank.

Fans are blowing in as its the only way to really cool the power supplies enough, there is a 2" gap at the bottom of the doors where I will be putting some sort of grill for the aesthetics . The light in this area is only on when I want it on, I have 4 switches that control all the under cabinet LED's & upper cabinets independently.

The Grizz 01-02-2014 12:00 AM

2 MP 40's are set up and running now & a few other little tid bits done.

AND...........WE ARE NOW SALTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!

I was talking about the lights on your controllers and switches, that would be enough to drive me batty at night, but I kind of obsess about stuff like that, so maybe I am not normal.

I think Brad left the front door of his light cabinet for two years just to drive me nuts

The lights from the controllers & switches are really not that bright at all, in the dark you can hardly see them at all & its not in a viewable area any ways.

Me thinks you just :loco:

It's really coming together
Can't wait till it's all done with the cubes
