Isn't it about time to start tearing this tank down, selling all the gear off and trying a different size tank?

It's the new and improved lastlight.

Hi,
Beautiful pics of the tank and mitras. I have a similar tank in making with GHL Mitras which is pending to be hooked up. Can u pls advise what type of screw u used to fix in the hanging bolt provided by GHL.

lastlight 09-12-2013 06:32 AM

thanks!

i just used regular wood screws to first secure a piece of plywood to my ceiling. then the same screws to anchor the fixture into the plywood.

JDigital 09-12-2013 03:23 PM

Photo update soon?

lastlight 09-12-2013 05:39 PM

Join the club... Any of you SPS bleached out under the GHL? I'm still struggling with some pieces.

lastlight 09-12-2013 06:07 PM

yes but i don't think the light is to blame. i did however crank it down a few weeks ago...

lastlight 10-03-2013 03:11 PM

trouble in paradise has continued so last night i gave the system a massive shot to the arm. 90g water change which meant there was only about 20g left in the tank. was pretty nerve-wracking but i was able to clean my sump and reset all my water. i've suspected my issues lie with elevated chloride levels due to all the magnesium dosing i've been doing. that and low or high levels of things i cannot measure.

so far the 3 pieces of sps that were looking really rough continue to do so but at a glance the rest of the tank looks like the day before. fingers crossed. i might have to get even more extreme and invest in a prayer reactor.

I have a spare if you want to borrow one. Sending reef prayers your way!

Things are slowly looking a bit better in the tank but my sps has a really long way to go before I'd call it colourful.

Earlier this week when it looked like I'd have to sell my leopard wrasse because it was being bullied I actually stole back the little frag tank I'd bought for the 404 build from my buddy. He built an 8 foot frag tank for the 404 so he didn't mind too much lol. I was going to try and keep her in this tank since I'm really attached.

Turns out the wrasses are both getting along again perfectly. No idea what that was all about. I went and setup the tank anyways! I stuffed it under the freebie cabinets I tossed up in the basement. This is beyond ghetto. I'm pretty damn proud of it

Nice work....

Stones 11-10-2013 11:35 AM

Looks like the build quality on your tank stands has dropped just a touch lol. I still think your 3 part doser shelf from the last build has this beat hands down though in the ghettoness department.

kien 11-11-2013 05:19 AM

wow, those matchstick legs look about as sturdy as mine

My regal tang that now resides in Concept's FOWLR 16" display tank ate my whole colony of organ pipe. Just another reason he had to move out.

Nice coral Brett!

Thanks. I wish I still had that pipe organ you gave me that hitch-hiked in with one of your coral orders. I think it's the same one you lost to the tang... it was really nice too.

Amazing shots Brett
Must have taken awhile to perfect them.
Great depth of field

Reef Pilot 11-17-2013 02:29 PM

Wow, you sure know how to use that camera! Really brings out the beauty in those corals.

Madreefer 11-17-2013 03:03 PM

Cool pics. Blenny shot is awesome

kien 11-17-2013 03:05 PM

Tank is looking good man. Can't even tell that you're running LEDs.

waynemah 11-17-2013 03:28 PM

Perfect collection of the nicest Zoas! Nice work Brett, your camera skills are 1337.

Doug 11-17-2013 04:59 PM

What they all said....WOW..amazing pics

Dez 11-17-2013 11:47 PM

I think your camera skills are 1338.

lastlight 11-18-2013 01:14 PM

Thanks guys!

Delphinus 11-18-2013 03:18 PM

Wow, yeah, those are awesome.

Is everything recovered from your bleach out then? 'Cuz this stuff looks more than OK...

lastlight 11-18-2013 04:55 PM

Thanks Tony. My acans aren't quite as colourful as they were before the bleaching but they're all close except for one. I lost one sps with 2 others are still hanging in there. It's the sps for the most part which still don't look too hot but they're slowly improving so my fingers are crossed.

gqlmao 11-18-2013 05:02 PM

My golly, stunning pictures! I love how the black background accentuates everything. One day if mine even came close I would be a happy man.

JDigital 11-18-2013 05:37 PM

Those photos just helped me make up my mind with what I'm going to do with my tank. Thanks Brett. :) And very nice pics!

lastlight 11-18-2013 05:40 PM

Lol thanks. I have the lights off in the room so that helps gives some corals the black background. Otherwise I think it's shooting with F22 that squeezes the light out of the background of shots where there is stuff behind the corals. I don't really know much about my camera or the terminology.

You'd laugh if you saw my 'workflow'.

1. shoot a metric butt-tonne of photos
2. toggle between them and pick the best one for each shot. mostly check and pray one is mostly in focus
3. open in photoshop and do the following to every one:

3a. auto colour
3b. auto contrast
3c. auto tone

photoshop allows you to fade from 0 - 100% the effect of each of these. sometimes a command totally messes with the shot and you don't apply it at all.

3d. sharpen

gqlmao 11-18-2013 05:50 PM

Words of a wise man. I am going home straight after work, and going to do the "workflow".

Hot diggity I should have had your bring your camera to my house! My photography skills are only slightly better than an 9 month old chewing on a camera.

Stones 11-19-2013 01:53 AM

Crazy awesome photos Brett! You make me want to go out and buy a real camera instead of my point and shoot garb...

Thx man. I'd be happy to take a few pics provided you don't take the glue out again lol.

Thx the more I use the silly macro lens the more I wished I could afford to own one!
