did this cyano brake-out occur after your last coral addition.
I had a serious cyano problem after adding 3 colonies from HR last shipment. I haven't even seen any in 2 years and I attribute it to that.It seemed to be a stronger strain. Probably a hitch hiker IMO |
no it didnt happen after the last addition. to be honest i dont know what brought it on. its been slowly building for 2 months and now its a killer.
|
man, that sucks. pat, pat. it happens to the best of us.
|
I'm really very sorry to hear this.
I feel a tinge of guilt because I said I thought the corals could withstand a 2 day blackout. :( I really don't know what to say. I'm sorry. I know about the dead coral thing. I can at least share a little of your pain there (different reasons - and still ongoing :( I've given up on the tank in question - it's beyond fixing). I really hope you get on top of this soon. I know the frustration of dinos, I had it twice, and nearly quit the hobby 100% both times. It's very demoralizing. I hope it resolves soon. |
good god tony you dont need apologize. its not your fault at all. but thanks for the input though
|
Maybe you've considered this...Keep siphoning it away from the corals, rock etc...but leave it alone where you can stand to leave it (on the sand?).
I'm thinking that whatever nutrient it's living on..maybe it will use it up if allowed to grow. If large water changes haven't helped...do the opposite. Back off on your water changes....see if it gets worse or better. In my previous life, I knocked it out with a new skimmer. On my new tank, it just went away in exchange for hair algae...which is the lesser of two evils. |
that may be an idea because today is the 2nd day i have turned lights on for 4 hours to help the corals a bit and it does not seem to be coming back on the rocks and stuff but is takiing off on the sand.
|
Without reading previous posts you should give chemiclean a try.It solved my problems and never had a prob after.
|
well i think i may have finally kicked the dinos. dont know what 1 thing killed it but i tried alot of different things. heres a list
replaced ro/di filters twice cleaned all pumps and redirected wavyseas more water changes/ less water changes replaced MH bulbs cut feeding down to every 3 or 4th day turned CA reactor off tested any water associated with tank ran lots of carbon excessive sandbed syphoning and cleaning rocks wet skimming chemipure the final draw was an 8 day blackout which killed it off finally. but the dino spread was so big that when it died off it completely polluted the tank and killed alot of corals and caused a big chain reaction of death. but so far it has not returned. most of the corals really really browned out but now they are starting to color up again. all LPS but 2 frogspawns died. we'll see how it goes. i really hope it doesnt come back though |
i'm actually enjoying looking into the tank again so i couldnt refuse taking a couple tank shots. i know its pretty drab looking right now with stuff browned up but slowly the color is coming back. i kind of wish i had taken pics when the dinos overrun everything to compare to now.

Dude it looks awesome. Don't worry about the SPS colours they'll come back.. I wish I could keep brown SPS... It's a great looking tank. Onwards and upwards. :)
|
Colin,
Glad to see you have won your battle. I have had same problem for the last few months and think I am finally on the winning side as well. Ed |
i got a new camera on boxing day and have taken hundreds of pics trying to figure out how to use it. starting to get there. after a couple weeks still no sign of dino's. thank god. corals are really recovering their color (still a ways to go) and they are going through a wicked growth spurt which is awesome. just thought i'd toss out a few pics to ya.

new top down photos
i dont have a clue what happened to last pics but anyway. i got a phosban reactor and rowaphos and it has been running for about 2 weeks and already po4 is undetectable. i'm stoked about that because the tank has been running i have always had 0.05 po4. i took a huge amount of top down pics today so sit back and relax

Sorry - apparently I'm obsessed about measuring NO3 and PO4 - because I ask this of just about everyone - but I'm curious, what are you using to measure PO4?
Pictures show an incredible improvement in colour. Very awesome! (PS. I told you so :p ) |
Colors are looking great Colin. I especially love this one:
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...2/DSC00536.jpg |
delphinus - i know you did tell me so, its ok to say that as long as its not coming from the wife!!!!!
christy - it is definitely one of my favorites as well. the pic is really accurate finally on this piece. i could never get the color right with the other camera but the new one rocks although the piece is a touch more baby blue, maybe if i had increased exposure it may have come out better |
Everything looks like its boucing back amazingly well. I love the colors in the top down shots. Do you use a photobox?
|
Tanks looking really nice Colin. Colours seem to be looking great.
|
catherine - no i dont, i wish i had one. i just turn all pumps off and the wavebox and let it settle for a few minutes
|
i want frags!!! haha. Looks fantastic!
|
here is a couple of new additions over the past week or so. i love this mimic tang just gothim today. i got 3 red bar anthias and also a male and female blue throat but they are extremely camera shy. just me i have tried to get pics of them
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...6/DSC00587.jpg http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...6/DSC00588.jpg http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...6/DSC00589.jpg |
Is the tang in the last picture a Juvenile Vlamingi ?
|
It's too bad your tank looks so crapy after the Lights out period.
HOLLY COW your Tank Looks amazing. Um I know this is a horrible question to ask, but do you sell frags or do you just take them to HR J |

thanks guys. it was sold as a juvi unicorn but i think it might be a vlamingi.
j - i would prefer to sell or trade the frags rather then take 'em in but sometimes its such a hassle arranging times and bargaining on prices. but yeah i'd love to sell em or trade for sweet stuff. |
i love that one too greg, the bugger is just now starting to smarten up, it bleached on me for a while and then just didnt perform but finally the potential is coming out i think. it sucks when you buy a piece thinking it 'could' be something and doesnt turn out, ya know what i mean
|
I also picked up one of those Unicorn Tangs (Vlamingi). Cute little guy. I hope he remains as cute when he's 2 feet long! Mine seems to be doing well so far.
|
few new pieces to show ya. they look WAAAYYYY better in real life but my photo skills kind of suck. anyway enjoy
