I am blown away at the growth rate of my purple death Palys, have been target feeding them brine shrimp when I feed the main tank and they have gone from 14 to 27 polyps over the span of a little over a month and a half!

I walked by the tank twice before seeing them, Kevin needs some more powerful lighting on the ric tank because WOW do they pop under an 8 bulb fixture. Even more excited to see these things grow out!

Zoaelite 11-13-2010 06:10 PM

Oh and for anyone having bryopsis problems Kevin got in a nice big shipment of lettuce nudies, went strait to work and hasn't stopped mowing yet.

Update

Well it's been a hectic last couple weeks but I'm very happy with the results, I decided to remove most of the livestock from my main tank, replace it with my zoas and then shut down the zoa tank. It was really hard to see most of it go but school has kept me busy so I think it's best for all.

Also managed to catch a 2.5" crab that I have been hunting for a while now .

After removing the liverock/ coral I caught most of the fish and tried to reaquascape it as open as possible.

Current fish:
Pair of percs (1 Adult female Onyx and 1 male snowclown morph)
Pair of Red long fin wrasses
Yellow Tang
Flash Gordon
Tail Spot Blenny
Potters Dwarf Angel
Flame Back Dwarf Angel
Pair of Fire Shrimp
Pair of Cleaner Shrimp
4 Peppermints

I will let the photos do most of the talking though, this is an old camera with wonky setting's so everything looks mushroom trip like:

Thanks Tony! I found a large rock of those Bam Bam's that I was looking for, it looks a little haggard right now but if it gets better I will cut you a frag for the new tank.

I got a large rock of the Dragon Eye's, Copper rings and a few others off Kevin but the Bam Bam's were from Ocean City. These are with the same camera, different settings (Still playing with it) but just the actinics on.

I can't wait for everything to grow in at this point, I destroyed about 10 lbs of live rock and dumped it between the colonies which should make for some great growth.

Yup just have the one big one for now, will be keeping the aquascaping the way it is now. I'm a big fan of the open look and the fish seem to be enjoying the extra swimming space so it's all working out.

I don't study at my house for that exact reason, always head to school for the day and spend some extra time in the Library.

The pretty red polyps are pretty nice .

The tang looks like Acanthurus blochii, Tailring Surgeon

Try this link.

http://www.fishbase.org/summary/spec...ry.php?id=4750

Delphinus 12-17-2010 09:20 PM

I've wondered that myself a couple times. I'm not sure though, the ones I've seen had had more blue but it's hard to tell since the differences could be because of juvenile colouration or something like that (or lighting/camera/etc stuff).

Some pictures of blochii I took earlier this year:

If it helps cinch an ID..

Zoaelite 12-18-2010 01:14 AM

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I guess I will have to wait for him to mature a bit more before I really take a swing at the ID.

That being said I would be ecstatic if he turned out like your photos Tony, what a magnificent looking fish!

I would think this is the juvi ring tail:
http://img691.imageshack.us/img691/3628/fishyfishy.jpg
VS
http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/8158/p1140693.jpg

They certainly look similar but its not 100%. Maybe I have some sort of ring tail hybrid? Anyone have any good books for fish IDing lying around?

On another note I boxed in my sump as the noise from my new skimmer was bugging me. I didn't want to spend a bunch of money so I went as cheap as possible. 1/2"thick pink insulating Styrofoam cut, spray painted black and affixed to the stand with velcro cost me just over $50.00 for all the supplies.

Stupid cat's are now using the stand as a scratching post... At least there not peeing on it.

I may have to steal this idea for mine as well. Skimmer is pretty noisy too. As for the cats, just give them time. They just don't like it enough yet.

A couple of additional pieces tapped to the inside really helped to silence it overall, couldn't be happier with the look and its easy and cheap to do.

Pssst! Regarding those sweet new Zoas, you mention size in relation to Paly vs Zoa - that is not a reliable way to ID. Easiest way to ID is texture, Palys feel like fine sandpaper, and Zoas will be smooth. Either way, nice Zoas!

Oh, and Flower Anemone or close relative?

True but I have seen real Magician palys before and they are about 4 times the size, I would make the argument that most palys are larger than most zoa species but there is allot of variation out there. I can't think of a single paly/ proto paly that is smaller than my largest zoa, any in your tank?

I can't find any comparable photos of a Red Flower Anemone on google, the tenticals look a fair bit different than everything out there.

I'm not saying your Zoas are Magicians, I don't think they are. I do have a mini colony of small Palys. I don't know the name of them...they are dark with white speckles all over them.

Try leaving out the red part. Flower Anemones come in many colors, and depending on specie they can look different. That's my best guess, but there's a lot of weird nems out there. Have you touched it? Is it sticky? Did you get a palpable sting? I don't condone touching an unknown nem, though I would do it. :D

It stings? Ooooo, lemme try! That's how I got stung by a Pacific Sea Nettle. They are the only Jellyfish in ocean near Vancouver Island that actually sting...not that I'd know. ;)

Still stumped on an ID, clowns haven't touched it either so I'm doubting the purchase (Although it is a wicked looking nem). It certainty is sticky, in Vegas they have touch tanks where you can poke and prod nems all day long .

Anyone have any insight for influencing my clowns to host? Ken @ Blue world said I should use a clay pot but they completely ignored it and continue to host on silicone. Wont touch the pulsing xenia, Mushrooms or 3 different types of nems.

My bro is heading to Thailand and picked up a new Cannon, really excited to learn how to use it but here are some quick shots.

I'm so envious of ppl able to keep zoas happy. All my params seem to be in order...sps doing really well...zoas love to melt away on me. I have a few patches doing ok but it's frustrating. The larger the colony introduced the better luck I have but even then it's not been a garantee.

Regardless...lemme know when those frags are ready =)
