Oh if you have a canopy and the end is somewhat open to that fan intake you're fine. I thought you had pendant/open top plans.

muck 08-19-2011 09:51 PM

This is looking really good Bob.

Ya, the intake would actually be in the canopy, obviously you cannot see that from the pictures taken, but it does stick out about 2" above the tank edge.

Thanks Ryan, it's coming along, slowly, but it's getting there. Im hoping by Christmas to be operational, I would say sooner but I'm being realistic.
I'm going to talk to Dave or Brad about a sump, as thats the next thing on my list.

I was hoping for the end of summer, but..... ran into a little basement troubles. Like I said, Im trying to be realistic.
Im going to start the rock(base) work right away, hope to have it done in the next little bit. Then I can seed it with the 150 lbs I have left in the back room. Its amazing to see how many sponges have started to grow when there is nothing around to eat them.
At any rate, hope I can speed things up a bit, as I find myself becoming impatient as well. As nice as it was not to look after anything besides my kids all summer, I sure miss not having a functional tank.

fishytime 08-22-2011 07:16 PM

I'd be Jones- n too ..... It's looking really good tho mang!

Thanks it's actually starting to look like something. Im even starting to miss my monthly stop at RC. Haven't had a chance to see the new place yet, looking forward to that though.

martinmcnally 08-22-2011 07:58 PM

Looking good man, love that rock overflow you built. Was that just base rock and some kind of cement mix in between them?

I wanna new tank!

It was base rock zipped tyed to eggcrate. I then used spray foam(used for waterfalls, and is marine safe when fully cured), when it was still wet I dumped sand and crushed coral on it, I still may epoxy it with another layer of sand, but Im sure the coraline algae will just cover it anyway and it will be all for not. It was actually quite easy to do, and I had alot of help from a few guys on RC that had done it before.
As for the new tank, can't help you with that one.

Well a few things to update. Mike was kind enough to stop by and wire in the panel for me. Thanks Mike, I owe you.

I was in Calgary last week and managed to talk to Brad about a sump, so that's been ordered. While I was in cowtown I picked up a new light. Well new to me. It's a 6' solaris I5 and is in really good shape, I figure I will use this until I get my lighting figured out. It's LED old school(Brett, if you read this, this still gives me the option to join LWL by the way). Im actually quite surprised of how bright this thing actually is, and the programming(which is basic), is really nice as well.

Ya, been a while Doug. But with no water it just gets depressing going to the stores. Hope to change that soon, still have to make it to the new store. As soon as that sump is ready, she'll be piped in.

Unfortunately it's still in the faucet. I do however expect my sump to be here in the next week or so. So that may mean water in the not so distant future.

The Codfather 09-27-2011 12:44 AM

Skimmer modifications.

Well I've heard a few good stories about these. Thought I'd give it a try. Time will tell, I hope to have a sump here soon, as soon as it's here, piping with commence.

Time will tell if this does anything, the skimmer is a beast already. Wont know for a while yet.

cale262 09-27-2011 01:10 AM

Is that the retrofit Bob?

The Grizz 09-27-2011 01:14 AM

Where did you get that rig from? What is the purpose?

Stole it from the local gas station, Its a self cleaning head for the skimmer keeps the neck clean and gets way more production

What he said. Well except for the stolen part.

Ya, It's the retrofit. I think after all what I've heard from you and some others about the lids, Im glad it turned out the way it did. At least I know it'll work and the tolerances are good. I will however have to modify the locker, I have to cut off 3" for the gravity feed, but it just so happens Im pretty good with acrylic.

BlueTang<3 09-27-2011 01:45 AM

If you were not so cheap and bought a real skimmer you would not need this option.

Wow, what did I do to **** you off today! We going to cowtown this weekend?

BlueTang<3 09-27-2011 01:49 AM

I dont know are u?

freezetyle 09-27-2011 04:27 AM

you'll love the cleaner. I have a swabbie on my BK. although it has really made me lazy. i pretty much just look at the skimmer to empty the cup and maybe once a month wipe off the neck cleaner. Love your build so far!

Hustler 09-27-2011 05:29 PM

Great looking build :) Love the welding in the house too...wish i could get away with that

lastlight 09-27-2011 05:39 PM

Is that the aquadriver version you have?

I know the swabbies are the cheapest route but I recall reading a few stories about their performance and fit that cast a few doubts?

Just remember, it's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission. I did it when she was out for the evening.

It's a swabbie, I origionally wanted the new top, but they couldn't promise that it would work considering the clearances. So they sent a retrufit, and in hind sight, Im glad they did. Although I had to drill a hole in the lid myself, but it wasn't that bad. Good looking skimmer though, I must say.
(Sorry Brett, couldn't help myself)

The Codfather 09-27-2011 06:11 PM

Hey Dave, How's the progress on that sump? Do you know offhand?
