This can be a very lonely hobby. I tried to show my daughter all the skimmate I had taken out of the collection cup and not only was she not interested, she actually left the house :surprise:

Marie what are the true dimensions of the WHOLE unit assembled?

J&L only lists the size of the base but I'm trying to plan my sump and would really appreciate it if you could measure for me =) I think there are 2 different ways to mount the pump so i imagine there are 2 possible dimensions as well.

Oh and what depth does it need to be run in?

Thanks.

marie 05-07-2008 05:12 AM

From everything I've read, the ideal depth is around 9" which is where I have mine at the moment and it seems to run well but i think i read somewhere it can be anywhere from 7-10" as long as the depth is stable (doesn't change with evaporation)
The way I have it set up the dimensions are (including all sticky outie pieces  ) 16 1/2" by 12".
If it is set up the other way I think it would be approx 11" by 19" ... all these measurements are approx because it is hard to get a true measure with the base underwater but I rounded all the numbers up so it shouldn't be bigger then what i said

It's better to go skimmerless until you have the money saved up for a good one then it is to have to deal with a crappy one that sets you back a couple of hundred dollars.

Well I think its done breaking in but its kind of embarrassing to show exactly how much gunk is being removed in a 24hr period
Skimmer cup was empty yesterday evening

All I can say is, no wonder I started having problems with the tank. I'm now going to assume that it is all a nutrient issue, not a co2 bottle issue
