I'm with Greg here; I believe people using Canreef to trade owe each other the courtesy of being honest, honouring commitments, and being on time. This applies to both sellers and buyers. I have had some horrific experiences too, dozens of no-shows, etc. I do believe we should name names. Ebay has a rating system, Amazon rates vendors, perhaps Canreef should too?...

What constitutes a bad rating, not showing up on time, a misunderstanding between buyer, seller, a coral or fish dying a week after it is purchased. How about loosing colour. There is also the legal issue. Canreef would be setting themselves up to get sued if someone gets a bad rating and it hurts their business (selling corals). Or Canreef could potentially loose sponsors/advertisers. What about fake ratings as what happens at Amazon or Ebay, You never see a rating less than 97% positive from Ebay. Remember Ebay and Amazon make money off of each transaction to help pay the cost of managing their rating system. Look at sites like Craigslist they don't have a rating system, nor does Kijiji or the local papers classified section. I would compare what we do here closer to what these classified organizations are providing. If you feel you have really been burned by another Canreef member you could always privately approach a moderator to discuss possible banning of that member if what they did was really bad (like robbing you when you go to pick up corals) I would rate the vast majority of my buying selling experiences on Canreef as positive. Sure there are a few flakes out there that say they are going to purchase a coral or tell you they are coming at a certain time but that is to be expected. If you want to have an outlet to sell your stuff you need to put up with this. |
Well this thread derailed and went down hill fast.
Threads are a poor way to do it anyway, you would have to read through the entire thing to find out John Doe is a bad guy. If you have issues just post a message to their profile to give everyone else a heads up. |

If you give him a bad rating for not selling what you wanted, whats to stop him from giving you a bad rating for expecting too much. If you didn't buy the corals (which is your prerogative) whats to stop him from giving you a bad rating for not buying his corals after he made cuttings and drove out to meet you. Either way nothing is really served to the reefing community by allowing us to name names. This kind of thing can get ugly real fast. Did you contact him afterwards to let him know the corals didn't survive and give him an opportunity to fix the problem or at least offer you a discount on replacements? The best option is not to buy any more corals from him and tell your friends. But not on an open forum. |
I totally agree with you guys (Frogger and Ryan). I don't like negative threads like this. I don't think it does the community any good. So far there are no names, which I think is a good thing. At least it's bringing some life to the forums though. Haha!
