Dave, that power issue, did you get an electrician to install all those circuits?

There are devices like this:

http://www.itwatchdogs.com/product-d...ger_x2-61.html

That can monitor power and your can track them (SNMP traps, emails, etc) and with a UPS and small server, you can log everything and even get power usage stats. What gets measured gets managed. ;)

To run everything on a UPS, you're going to need to think big, like home genset big - if your power goes out for 12 hours on account of ENMAX (not impossible), all the emails in the world won't prevent an issue. You'd have to get a pretty big portable generator to keep everything running for any extended period of time.

If you get any UPS to run the motors for your pumps, you might want to check out how they run on the step-approximated UPS's... I have to use a true sine UPS otherwise the motor on my pumps just shudders for 5 minutes.

i was looking at getting one of these on a switching sub-panel
http://www.homedepot.ca/product/eco-...closure/934334

from what i understand, if the house losts power the sub-panel will switch over to the generator with in 10 seconds.

it will only power the pumps and heater

the generator runs on natural gas so it should be able to run extend period of time

reefwars 10-27-2011 03:05 AM

huh not sure how i missed this build but i have been drinking apparently lol soooo almost a bucket of salt a week eh lol and your powerbill is gonna be through the roof the cops are gonna be at your door thinking your running a grow op lol......is there a wifey????

wow 1100g is 9,185 lbs in water alone lol......this is great now when someone says im nuts i can just show them this thread ;)

steallar job and quite the imoressive build if this doesnt get totm on some site in the years to come ill quit reefing and buy a lizard lol

cheers!!!!!

Yeah, those ng units are perfect for a self-sustaining home because it has to be a major disaster before NG goes down... And honestly, if that came to pass - the fish won't be on your mind.

6kw should do a fair amount. You might want to put a couple light circuit on it too and your furnace, so lights and climate stay on if you can afford based on the draw. What does an tank that size take to heat it you imagine?

I presume you will get a hrv to just keep it dry. :)

I must say, I'm jealous of the look, but it would be more mantainence than I can do. :)

BlueTang<3 11-10-2011 03:21 AM

Do you guys have a website with customer's tank pics? That would be really nice to give the rest of us an idea of what you guys can do.

dave_C 11-29-2011 01:09 AM

so it's been a while but finally have an update to post

couldn't get motivated enough to go into work today, so i figure i would call one of my staff to help me work on the electrical today.

who would have thought running nine circuits takes so long to do:lol:

so this is the new sub-panel we installed with 7 gfi dead fronts and two regular plug
http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/a...s/IMG_0200.jpg

this is the rats nest off the current panel
http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/a...s/IMG_0201.jpg
next up will be to clean up the wiring in the main panel and have the hrv installed this week

so more to come, but it atleast it is starting to move

dave

BlueTang<3 11-29-2011 02:27 AM

hey brett, ya it is nice to be able to pick up the phone, have someone come over get it done. some times i wish i could say i did this all by myself like you can! but i am so half*** it would never make it pass the planning stages:wink:

i also had a meeting with the heating/venting guy today, i only wish i could've understand what he was telling me, but it sounds really cool what he wants to do. i was lucky enough to have meet him though another project my other company was working on, but he has a hrv system that was rejected by a customer because it was not posh enough for them. the scary thing is the unit costed over 10k that he is willing to give me as it was already paid for, man some folks just have way to much money:wink: but it works out great for me

Seriak 03-12-2012 06:11 PM

If you need help Dave, I am in. I have done a bit of drywalling, but you are on your own for taping and mudding.

Oh and I highly recommend the beer and pizza before the drywalling. Gives you more of a picasso finish. :)

globaldesigns 03-12-2012 06:18 PM

Hey Dave, I am also in, can help, and always interested in salt gear. HEHE... Let me know, if you want me to assist.

sphelps 03-12-2012 06:22 PM

I won't help directly but I can supply a name and number for a good taper/mudder who is reliable and does excellent work for what I've found to be one of the cheapest.

Reefie 03-14-2012 07:55 PM

thanks!!

wait until you hear what i have lined up for equipment for this build:mrgreen:

been working with proline(albert) on this and we have come to a consensus on two pieces of equipment so far.

first is the lighting, i knew it was LED's right the the start but just could not make up my mind on which unit!

my first option was to go with 16 ecotech radions but albert really step up and give me a deal i could not pass up on getting 4 of the Vertex Illumina 260 6 footers. i think over all i will be happy with this chose i hope:redface:
not my picture but still nice!! i was told wait time's to build the 4 units will be 6 weeks, it will be fitted with the red led's as will as the new VU led's that they just released
http://i1258.photobucket.com/albums/...ics/images.jpg

skimmer will be two of these bad boys:mrgreen:
super marine 300
http://i1258.photobucket.com/albums/...cs/images1.jpg
and two if these new self cleaning heads from vertex
http://i1258.photobucket.com/albums/...IMG_0237-1.jpg

now the hunt is on for founding some DC pumps's

thanks dave

ya i did some research into those, turns out they are almost the same pump that red dragon ii pumps

from what i gather they really was not designed for salt water use as people started having problems with them after a couple months of use.

i may get a couple to try out but really didn't want to use something knowing it has a high failure rate

thanks dave

Nice choice Dave. Of course anything but LEDs for the size of tank your setting up will kill you in electricity and hmuididty in the summer.
I vouch for the 260 6 footer as i am running this baby at about 60-70%. Do not have the red led module on it though. Albert told me about that self cleaning skimmer cup too, man the silly things we like to mod our tanks with....I want one too!!!

lastlight 03-15-2012 01:16 AM

Abyzz pumps all the way Dave. Running for quite some time on peter's 1350g on rc and they've performed flawlessly.

i have been playing around with a self cleaning head at the store for about three weeks now and i already know two mod's i want to do to it:wink:

will two main reason

1)space is the number one reason, as i can fit two on the brench behind the tank.
2)my god do you know the cost of one those bad boys! lol
2A)really i just wanted two skimmers for back up reasons and i would be crazy to do two bk500ext didn't you think?

yes self cleaning heads lol less work equals more time too better enjoy the tank. by the way i think i was able to get a free one for you:wink:

thanks

i just spoke with a company out east, and have ordered 4 of these pumps to try out
http://www.advancedaquarist.com/blog...by-h2o-systems

they only have the 1320 gph now but will have the 2640 ghp in about 3 weeks.

at 199 and 349 it can't hurt to try these units out:mrgreen:

if they are any good, than i will have to rack my brain on how to get 22 of the large units into this tank

thanks dave

d33ps3a 03-15-2012 04:15 PM

Where are you getting these pumps from. I'm really interested in getting one.
