If the price of helfrici wasn't so much these days I would love one, also the exquisite fire fish with yellow bellies are pretty neat and they dwarf the regular ones.

Oh shoot, I will get a picture next time.
boxing day sale, I might pick another one up.

Hey Rich I have a question for you... I know this build you went with a couple of tunze and gyre, and your last build you had mo40s... which do you prefer? I'm looking to upgrade my flow in my 75g and I currently have a tuze and a new korelia

I like the directional adjustability of my Tunzes and the reliability of the whole Tunze line of wave pumps. Gyres are new and so far imho it has proven to be rather reliable and the share volume of water those gyre moves is second to none. My experience with mp40 has not been too good, darn things were noisy and breaks all the time. However, I can't speak for the new gen ones as I have never owned one. For the price you are paying I would choose gyre follow by tunze than mp40. But all this is just my personal opinion. I know a few reefers on here are dieheart mp40 fans but they are wrong. Lol

Amadod2 12-24-2016 06:39 PM

lol, good points. i have had my tunze for 4-5 years and its great, just wish they weren't so bulky

Gyres! Problem solved! Lol

Anyone that can take a half decent wrasse picture has my admiration. My pics all look like pink/orange/yellow streaks. Love the Oregon Tort, how long have you had it? I haven't managed to locate a frag yet...

You have the 200 series Gyre or the 100 series? I had an XF150 for a year in my tank, and found it noisy even with brand new (150) motor and mounting blocks. I installed a couple XF230 for a friend and they were really noisy too. I agree with you, Tunze are still hard to beat, and the MP fans out there are definitely wrong. :D Tunze has been making noise for a couple years now about a new controller in response to the programming/controllability of the MP and new Gyres, but I think they still have yet to release it. It seemed like it was close last fall, but I haven't heard much since. I'll be first in line on that bandwagon as soon as it's available.

Thanks myka, I had the Oregon tort for bout 2 years it's been a slow grower but it's coming around. We can work out deal on a frag...👌

Gyres I run are the 150s. I had a slight breaking period with some excess noise but after that it was all good. I do ran a maxpect dual controller and during pulse it makes some decent noise from the ramp up and ramp down but nothing my ati fans wouldn't drown out lol. Tunzes are the staple pumps, low maintenance and good performer. When ever the power is out, those are my go to pumps. I think flow technology has hit its pinnacle. I can't see them making it anymore efficient than what they are now all the other brands are just duplicates.

such an amazing tank!!! i have a few questions for you Rich, what are your big 3 levels (cal, alk, mag) what is your tank maintenance like, i.e. water changes?

I am so bad at testing but wife usually does it for me every 2-3 weeks , I try to keep it at natural salt water level, 7 dkh 420 cal and 1300 mag. water changes is done every 2 weeks some times 3. 35 gallons per change on a 140 total system. Dosing is done by BRS bulk chemicals. I don't dose much of anything else but I have a good stock of stuff that when I remember I dump some in. Recently I ditched the filter sock, getting sick of raising and washing. Lighting is a 8 bulb ati fixture. Bare bottom with shit load of flow (2 gyres, 2 tunze 6105, return pump is laguna 4800gph) skimmer is a bbk super marin 250. Lastly some marine pure bricks along with the new brightwell no3 brick.

Amadod2 02-07-2017 12:18 AM

what salt do you use? I'm been using IO but thinking of switching once I'm done my bucket

ReefMadness 02-07-2017 04:19 AM

incredible sps colonies. hopefully I'm there... in about 10 years lol

WarDog 02-07-2017 04:28 AM

Say what? Is this thread still active? Thought you shut down that tank months ago... and let's keep the language PG13 before I drop the ban hammer.

P.S. Can I come over for a $15 frag and ask you several dozen questions then try to low ball you for more frags please? Also... do you have change for $5?

He uses IO too.

hunggi74 02-07-2017 05:21 AM

I've found that there is a definite advantage if you can source your stock from someone who has a well established tank with thriving colonies. It's one less chance that you're taking. Rich's tank has been a well documented success story. His corals are hardy. I know if only a handful of people I'd ever source my corals from and he's on that list for a reason.

Can I come over for $15 frags too now?

Been using io for the longest time but switched over to reef crystals when they were on sale for 34 bucks at pet smart a few years back, bought everything they had from 4 different locations lol so Asian lol

Hey I see Tapatalk fudged my attempted reply to this...

Your ATI fans are noisy? I can't even hear mine! I've heard other people complain about the noise too. I literally can't tell if they are running or not without looking. The only thing I can hear in my tank is the skimmer which is pretty quiet too. The Tunze ATO pump...that's another story! Holy crap that thing is loud! I have 3 of them, they are all loud! I agree with you on the pumps. It's a race to the bottom now, and I'm going to be awfully mad if some "poop" company puts Tunze out of business. I'm concerned when they've been talking about a new pump controller for like 2 years, but haven't put it out yet (that I know of).

I got the none-dimmable version so those fans are brutally loud at 9v which is recommended by ATI, I contacted ATI us and they said to run them at a lower speed but I have been told that they will shorten the life of the bulbs and ballast if it's ran below 9v. I have learned to live with it but it sure is nice when they turn off at 10 pm lol

hillegom 02-15-2017 10:25 PM

Are these the fans that look like they belong in a computer?
If so, I have had great success in quietening them down, by using a drop of oil.
You peel back the sticker that is on one side and add a drop of light machine oil, like three in one, or turbine oil.
Worked for me

I also find fans on my Ati a bit noisy. Have 5 of them in my unit... I replaced one with a computer fan before and still a bit noisy. I went to a store in Langley ( can't remember the name at the moment but not a computer store) and I opted for the cheapest one , they vary from $2 to $15 if I remember correctly , and apparently the more expensive one are more quiet, the one I got I think paid like 2.50 for it , fits good and is just a bit fatter than the Ati ones, and slightly quieter ...
Just to be clear mine are not super loud but I can hear them drawing air, don't expect to be dead silent lol...
By the way your pics looks great, will like to see the full tank one day... I'm just afraid going to get more in to it than I'm already ahah

Thanks, I will take a look. I sourced out some noctua fans that has better cfm ratings and supposed to be extremely quiet but I will try the oil trick first.

Come by any time, don't be shy. lol
