Everything out, scrape the glass, strain the substrate, suck out crap, do 75% water change, wait for it to clear, put everything back in....

why cant fish just use the toilet? Toilets take all the crap away....

Is it because of a lack of flow in such a small-ish tank and the large size of your substrate?

Yeah, I'm not sure of the situation either, but cleaning a tank that thoroughly will kill off a huge amount of biological bacteria and probably cause a good(bad)-sized ammonia spike.

2865 km & 23 hrs 6 min behind the wheel from 7 am Saturday to 7 pm Sunday was just a little bit of a trip. I wanted to stop at the shop in Saskatoon but it just added to many km to the trip.

If you and I were friends, I'd say that's just not a good enough excuse :biggrin:
