Used to be an IE Tech in the CAF. They put me in a green uniform. Sent me to Germany during the cold war. I drank a lot of beer & chatted up the fräuleins. Back to Canada for a few years & another stint in Germany. Drank more beer & some wine. Back to Canada. Then they messed things up with the trade structure & turned me into an AVN Tech. But what the hey, they gave me a nice new blue uniform, but it was still the CAF. Now it's the RCAF again, go figure. I finally decided the best thing to do besides skiing in winter, motorcycle/canoe in summer, was more of this....

I've always wondered if an embalmer would translate easily to taxidermy as well?

About the same amount as in B.C. I guess.

There would be a lot for sure, but equally, there would be very few people looking to buy. My aquariums would be the least of my worries if the sector tanked... as the economic impact of that would be so far reaching to businesses & lives beyond oil & gas, it'd be like the automotive industry bust in Ontario. People in the local area curb all their discretionary spending and can't find jobs. The cascading economic benefits of consumer spending is what economists call the multiplier effect--which would be all but wiped out.

As it is, I consider all my spending into aquariums as 'sunk costs' (ie it's not a value-retaining asset category and only worthy of salvage value)... just like cars.

Well, we have been through that in BC, with the lumber industry downturn and mining (years ago, but coming back a bit now). Having said that, I think the oil and gas boom in Alta (and Sask) is a little bigger than anything we have ever seen in BC, though.

You guys had better hope some pipelines get built... Western Canada Select is already below $55 today. And companies are cutting their cap spending for 2013.

Yup, that's another reason why I like airplanes (I have two floatplanes). Both are worth more than I have into them, as are my hangars. And they just keep going up in value. But we need more of you rich Albertans to keep that demand going...
