Got a melanarus wrasse awhile ago, great buy!

Reefie 06-26-2012 07:12 AM

Wrasses are EVIL!!!

There really should be a warning label at all LFS saying, "CAUTION: Wrasses are HIGHLY ADDICTIVE! Please proceed with CAUTION!"

Anyhow, I just came back from 2 weeks in LA. My biggest fear all trip was to return to an empty tank and all my Wrasses dead or MIA. Luckily, I returned to no casualties with my Wrasses. I only lost a couple of clams and a few SPS.

I'd like to thank d-bo for contributing to my addiction with a Mystery Wrasse added to my collection. Unfortunately, I met him at J&L and they just so happened to have a Naoko Wrasse available. My biggest question was, how often do you come across such a rare Wrasse nonetheless a MALE! Of course I couldn't help myself!!!

Wrasse Family:
Pair of Hawaiian Flame (Male & Female)
Pair of Yellow Coris (Male & Female)
Male Lineatus
Male Laboutei
Male Naoko
Mystery

*Male Golden Rhomboid still on order and should hopefully arrive this week.

tang daddy 06-26-2012 05:52 PM

So where are the pics Ken??

Leah 06-26-2012 06:27 PM

I have two wrasses

Very Yellow Coris... when I first got him he played Possum with me and scared me to death.
Threadfin Flasher... he is a wonderfully sweet addition.

Have had Green Coris... he was large, moved him and he died in protest, ugh!
Had a Mystery...true to his name it was a mystery as to why I kept it as long as I did.
Had a Solar...sadly my angel chased it till he jumped... one too many times.
Had a Melanarus...sold him.

Have had my fair share...but I am fussy about my wrasses.

yeah where is the proof Ken?

BTW I will be delivering your new 75 gallon tank for you some thime soon....Ken before you have a wrasse battle royal in the tank.

waynemah 06-26-2012 07:27 PM

Wrasses are my weakness... I've pushed my luck mixing a bunch of them together... Royal Penci, Melanurus, Christmas, Scotts, 6 Line, Black spotted Leopard... Hoping to add more.

Royal Pencil Wrasse.

The Mystery looks like any other Mystery Wrasse. Purple with psychedelic head.

You can hang onto the 75 for a while. My Wrasses are all getting along fine together, surprisingly.

I told him to stop swimming and pose while I try to take a pic with my phone, but like all Wrasses they never listen.

Golden Rhomboid will be the last Wrasse, I promise.

put a few drop of cyanide in the water... then you can have them pose however you want them to be.

Believe it or not, Big Al's a while ago. I didn't know it at the time, but they mislabeled it as a Christmas Wrasse (I called it that for several months ).

Didn't they have them labeled as multi coloured wrasse? When I bought the other one they had that's what they labeled it as. Unfortunately mine got bit in half by my trigger  he was fine with the other two wrasses but for some odd reason he didn't like my royal pencil

It's quite possible, although for some reason I refered to it as my Christmas wrasse until I actually bought one...

Bit in half, ouch! Expensive snack.

Haloreef 06-27-2012 05:48 AM

Wrasses

My growing list includes;
Equisite wrasse
Pyles wrasse (blue margin) male
Pair of Rubrimaginatus (red margin)
Aurantidorsalis (orange back)
Blue flasher wrasse male
And just added a pair of Laboutis (thanks Paul)
On the must have but don't list!
Lineatus
Hawaiian Flame
Rhomboids.
It's hard to juggle two expensive hobbys, reef keeping and poison dart frogs!
I have to try and split the funds evenly. It's only fair. Lol!
Keith.

Finally!!! My Wrasse collection is COMPLETE!!!

After a long search, my LFS finally found a Rhomboid for me. They came as a pair, I wanted the Male and Bblinks was looking to find a girlfriend for his Male. Needless to say that this worked out perfectly as our LFS had no intention of selling them seperately.

Without further adieu, here he is:

Thanks Eduardo! I'm not a patient guy, but I had to wait almost a month for this last wrasse.

I've wanted to get a pair of leopards but everytime I ask the LFS to feed them, they never eat so I get nervous and walk away. Went back a few days ago and they were still there so I said I'll take the chance on them and see how it goes. I put them in and they vanished until today! Once I saw them out and about, I threw my usual mix of food and at first they didn't seem interested and I started to worry but then the smaller of the 2 started to nibble at the larger pieces of mysis. Then it started to eat everything that floated by. The larger one still didn't seem to want to eat but finally a large piece of mysis went by and it took a bite! I couldn't believe it, the first day of feeding and they are eating frozen.

Here is a crappy, out of focus, pic of them.

I'm not fond of sixline's, they're a**es. I love my black leopard. He's now my new baby foxface's best friend.

yeah way to aggressive when they get big beautiful fish though, well it looks like my leopard survived the hazing because the 2 of them are actually able to stand each other in the same areas right now. i am removing the sixline when ever i can though.blacky is hunting and has eaten for me so im happy:)

now i want more wrasses :P

SeaHorse_Fanatic 08-05-2012 04:37 AM

Just added another pair of Vanuatu net caught Red leopard wrasses from IPU today to my collection. One looks ready to change to male. These have been in the Burnaby shop for months now so adapted to captivity. They get along fine with my black leopard from IPU (last month).

daniella3d 08-07-2012 12:58 AM

I have not seen my leopard wrasse for 4 days now :( She did not jump, so not sure where she is, dead or hiding.

SeaHorse_Fanatic 08-07-2012 03:17 AM

Added 2 more red leopards since IPU was having a BC Day sale. Now my main tank has 4 red leopards & 1 black (the four reds are schooling together which is very cool to see).

Reefie 08-08-2012 04:38 AM

Picked this bad boy up from my LFS. I believe it is a Male Hooded Fairy Wrasse, it was sent to them as a Flame.

http://img.tapatalk.com/6031980c-ef3f-ebeb.jpg

Bblinks 08-08-2012 05:03 AM

I thought its a Tonga flame wrasse...still a nice wrasse, I didn't pick it up cause I was scared that it would fight with my Hawaii flame. I hope that female red margin is still alive there.

Reefie 08-08-2012 06:34 AM

Hooded Fairy Wrasses, Tongan Flame Wrasses, and as well as the Nahacky's Fairy Wrasse are all variants of each other. This particular Wrasse has more similarities to the Coral Sea Hooded Fairy Wrasse than the Tongan Flame. I've spent the past few hours Googling and comparing pics of each variant of the species.

It has settled in with my Wrasse family very well. No fighting at all, although the Flame is flashing like no tomorrow. He is the King of the tank, at least that's what he thinks he is.

Reefie 08-08-2012 07:03 AM

http://reefbuilders.com/2012/01/16/c...brus-nahackyi/

The above site calls the "Tongan Flame" as the Nahacky's Fairy Wrasse.

The Wrasse I picked up resembles more along the lines of the species Cirrhilabrus Bathyphilus than the Cirrhilabrus Nahackyi

SeaHorse_Fanatic 08-08-2012 11:50 AM

Whatever it is, beautiful specimen. Out of my price range but gorgeous nonetheless.

I was so tempted as well.. but, my success rate of red leopard is 1 out of 4.

However, I think it will be easier to keep them with the 210.

I only have one six line wrasse on a newly setup tank but I am seriously considering stocking it with more Wrasse instead of other fish I had in mind. Anyone have suggestions for a smaller but awesome looking wrasse? My tank is 33 gal

I would've held off on the sixline since it can be aggressive towards other wrasses with the same body shape. Try some flasher if you like but be warned that wrasse are super addictive and once you start man oh man its hard to stop.

Hmmm. I noticed that six lines can be aggressive, mine likes to nip at the two firefish I have at times. Do they get along with not-wrasse a bit better? I was planning on getting a pair of black/white clowns and a flame angel eventually but am seriously considering more wrasses instead.

Bblinks 08-08-2012 08:22 PM

Does your firefish even come out with the sixline roaming around? Dwarf angel and clowns are tough little fishes so I wouldn't be worried about them. Do some research before you add any other wrasses but I can tell you they are one of my favorite fish.
