That looks awesome!!

Is it water tight? - What would happen in a power failure?

Skimmerking 03-20-2011 09:24 PM

Looks sexy i like it alot

There's an actual glass overflow on the inside. I just put the cover over top.

reefwars 03-20-2011 09:43 PM

Thanks, I wanted a true central overflow but needed a way to cover it up nicely, got a lot of help from RC on this one. But it turned out quite nicely I think. By the time I get some water in there and the coraline gets it, I think it will look wicked. Biggest problem was getting the rock to look good with out looking too staged.

Denny, it was easy, you can read a lot about this in the DIY section on RC. I asked a lot of questions and received a lot of idea's. If you have any questions send me a pm, or give me a shout.

outacontrol 03-23-2011 01:50 AM

that looks really cool, can't wait to see more

es355lucille 03-23-2011 01:55 AM

That is a very cool overflow encasement. Did it turn out to be very heavy? I never got around to it, but I will go and read your thread on building this monument. I see you have made places to stick some corals on it as well....thats really nice!!

It weighs about 60 lbs, not too bad, worked out pretty good. Lots of builds and info on RC on how to do it. I was going to epoxy and sand it, but I think it will be fine without it. Plus Im having a hard time finding an epoxy that is safe to use, I have called and emailed several companies trying to find a submersible, food grade epoxy with little success. I think in the long run after I have a few corals on it and the coraline algae gets to it, you'll never know the difference anyway.

fishoholic 03-27-2011 04:01 PM

Very cool Bob, I really like how natural it looks. Should make a great cover for the overflow.

SICCE pumps

Well my pumps arrived today, found a Canadian supplier for these, took a bit of looking, but well worth it. These pumps have a 5 year warranty and the customer service I received so far was very good. So far quite impressed. Going to fire one up in a tub to see the noise factor, but was told they are very very quiet. Each pump will put out about 3000 gph at 6' of head so plenty to go round.

BlueTang<3 04-09-2011 04:16 AM

Are the shafts and the screws titanium? I just pulled the plastic threads out of on of the skimmer bolts last night, no big deal but i see that those have some sort of inserts.

Dez 04-09-2011 04:19 AM

Looks promising Bob. Looking forward to the longterm progress of this build.

Shafts look to be a ceramic, but the bolts do screw into metal sleeved inside the body of the pump. Seem like a solid build.

Thanks Dez, I will see if I can get over there for some frags in the next 6 months. Build got off to a good start, but between the girls and work, this build has been at a standstill for a while. Hope to get a few things done in the next couple of weeks.
Your tank looks wicked by the way, going to have to stop by one of these nights and have a good look again, have been there for a while. Hows the family? Good I hope.

lastlight 04-09-2011 04:37 AM

What's the wattage? I was planning to use a stock laguna max-flo for some savings and I'm curious...

When I talked to the rep. I think he told me between 175-190 watts, I will have to have a look in the specs to confirm. I looked at the maxflo 4200 as well, specs have it at a little lower wattage, but I liked the construction of the sicce body and impellers better.
I have two Brett, your welcome to take one for a test on your tank if you want, I can bring it in to cowtown next time Im in if you want.

The Codfather 04-16-2011 02:54 AM

So heres a couple of pics, probably not the best, but you get the idea. Have a lot to do on it yet, probably start the woodwork in the next couple of weeks, as well as the rock work.

Going to try the tunze waveboxes out, I have four of them but decided to take and mount 2 on the far end on separate brackets(thanks Tony). I modified the brackets a bit to accommodate the cords going up through the bulkheads. I think it gives it a cleaner look.

Bob what is the glass bracing for on the bottom outer edge of the tank? Curious never seen this before.

fishoholic 04-16-2011 03:11 AM

Looks great so far

lastlight 04-16-2011 04:30 AM

How did I miss when you first showed that overflow cover?! That looks incredible and you'll have a decent clearance still for coral growth too. Very nice!

fishytime 04-16-2011 01:29 PM

nice job on the tunzes Bobby.....they do look pretty slick.....

far as i understand for big tanks they need it for extra stability

cale262 04-16-2011 03:43 PM

Saying it looks Fantastic would be an understatement :thumb:

es355lucille 04-16-2011 05:18 PM

Bob, where did you get the brackets from? This is a very cool design. Clean, and I like how the electrical cord goes neatly into the bulkhead. Did you design these? or are they a tunze item? never seen them before.

Do you think you could pipe these down further into the tank with plastic piping (2-6" long) and still have the stability? Just looking for ideas myself....I really like the bracketing.

Tank looks great Bob it's sure coming along

Delphinus 04-19-2011 03:41 AM

Hi Brad, I'll field this for Bob (he bought those off me anyhow ). Their actual intended purpose is mounting Tunzes to a Wavysea or Vertex Mocean swirler but I think they're a great way to get the same degrees of freedom out of the old style Tunzes that you'd get with the new ones .. so long as one's tank was prepped for it like what Bob did, before filling. By the time the idea occured to me it was far too late but I'm glad to see someone else had the same idea and was able to connect it to reality. :)

Ya, what Tony said. Sorry for the late reply, but I think Tony covered the base.
