You could maybe stack a couple of base cabinets?

doobiej 12-23-2010 10:30 PM

im definately as curious as Grizz about the overflow on this one. I have a 96Lx24Hx22W and chose a full 8 foot coast to coast overflow to maximize surface skimming. I am happy with my setup, although it does take up some room internally, so I too am curious to see if a much smaller overflow design will keep up with removing nutrients from such a big tank. please post some pics your feedback when you get it running. other than that, nice tank! After a year of running my 8 footer I am already wanting a 10.

look at my asmodeus's 150 gal i have the same one too

MitchM 12-24-2010 12:14 AM

$7600.00?

Holy Moley, what about buying some Ikea cabinets and modifying them?
I just bought some pantry cabinets from Ikea, about $500 each that are 15 X 24 X 87.
Cut them to size, re-drill for the dowels and maybe do up some plywood doors with some nice edging. It certainly would be cheaper!

Also..I like the small overflow. Keep the nutrients in the tank where the corals can use them but make sure to lower your bio load.

Mitch

Skimmerking 12-24-2010 12:18 AM

ya I know Mitch I was surprised too with the price. oh well bette rto find the right price and what I want since this is the last thing I ever buy for a tank.. since I will stay in this house...

MitchM 12-24-2010 12:23 AM

Maybe do you have any contacts with the local high school or a woodworking club?

Mitch

michika 12-24-2010 12:06 PM

Or local trades schools.

The build is looking good!

I also have a small side overflow box on my 230g reef tank, never noticed any issues with it. My only problem (annoyance) with it was every once in awhile I would discover one of my small goby/blenny/wrasse would find it's way into it.

That is insane - was that for just the doors or cabinets too? Have you tried some of other builders merchants in town? Most of them do kitchen stuff too, and I've never seen a house we built get a kitchen, or pretty much anything else for that matter, from home depot. Maybe their consumer friendliness comes at a price?

There has to be a way of doing it cheaper if that fails. You/we could make doors cheaper if we went for something like a plywood door with a wood trim around the edge (and you could have your custom sizes that way too).. Would be more of the Ikea type look, but you could make it 'pop' a bit with a different colour of wood for the trim; something like that computer table I have if you remember it. Bubinga (expensive) or Mahogany (less so) would stand out nicely if you're going for a light wood for the main part - and you can stand the pink dust when you sand it...

A suggested already, Ikea itself may also be a viable option even if you have to go and get it - I don't remember their stuff being that expensive and I have a soft spot for Ikea. Would be well worth a look at their website. It's also worth noting that the American Ikea seems from the websites to have a better range of stuff than the Canadian one. Don't know where the nearest American store is though. I think the nearest Canadian one is Calgary until they build that one in Winnipeg...

Finally, there's a Hutterite colony somewhere that does kitchen cabinets, I'll see if I can do some finding out...

Rob.

Well I start building the cabinets with my Carpenter friend tomorrow YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA,. Im going to be going with Maple and I will be building the doors too.

But got bored and was levelling the tank and so i started to fill some of the tnak with some make up water that I. I needed to flush out the membrane "ya that is it flush the membrane out".

so did some zap tying the rocks on the other side not bad I guess.

Ok so I bought the Wood for the stand I'm going to be going with Birch. Thought that i would try something different. Got together with my buddy who is allowing me to use his shop. Came up with a plan and a drawing He would let me use the shop unless I had a vision in my head and something on paper. He knows me to good. The Stand will have access through the front however I will be using Rare earth magnets to hold the front on plus to latches for safety. I'm going to be having a feed door on the left side so im not always in the top Hmmmmmmmmmm like that is going to stop me. The stand will 78" high and then 4" piece of crown molding shelf lick will be on the top.

I'm hoping to have this stand done by end of the month. The Reason I placed my order for 5 Small yellow tangs, 1 chevron tang, and a Tommi Tang. So I want to have them in the tank before I add (LIPS AKA sailfin)
and (@ss AKA KOLE) and well LULU she just don't care and man she is getting fat close to 1.5" fat and 5"

I'm going to paint the inside of the hood white with bathroom to seal it. and its going to be stained on the outside just haven't figured out what.

Well I will have build pictures tomorrow

Skimmerking 01-07-2011 06:20 PM

Well Yaaaaaaaayyyyyyy I got some progress done on the stand well Cabinets. tried to take some pictures of as myself and Dwayne a good friend of mine as we were working. So I hope these are good enough. So far I bought 6 sheets of 4x8 Birch and end roll to mask the ends of Birch. I'm still having the dilemma of the canopy since the top is going to be huge 8 feet long I'm going to run 1.5" strips all the way down underneath the top of the cabinet to stop it from bowing. the doors will be 2x48 so its alot easier to take off that attach to the Magnets. " SO HOW ABOUT I SHUT UP AND SHOW YOU THE PROGRESS....

here is the wood sitting here. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm WOOD!!!!

Dude that is so softcore. There's no real contact happening wth?

Other than that I'm liking what I see. My canopy is just going to be a 2x4 framework above my tank but tied into my joists. Then I'll worry about skinning it. Not sure you can get away with something that crude or not.

Skimmerking 01-07-2011 06:33 PM

This is the 2 cabinets that were made.. Im going to have 1 complete door for the small one 78"x15" and 2 doors for the right cabinet 78"x36" and I will put a kick plate on them too

Delphinus 01-07-2011 07:26 PM

As long as it's not a hairy back, I think we're all good with that.

The .. um .. wood is looking good man. I can't believe I just said that. What has this hobby become.

kien 01-07-2011 10:40 PM

Two guys and some major wood! Nice! And here I thought this build was kinda boring.

SmallFry 01-09-2011 04:40 AM

Cabinets are going to look good, birch is a nice choice - and I'd guess a lot easier to work with than the hard white maple I went with, that stuff was bulletproof...

Ya Rob the birch is really nice to work wit. its going to be finished by Thursday so then I can start to stain and seal it and paint the inside. then wait til my Light Rail comes in. Picking the lights up on Monday ya hooo.
After seeing Dez's tank i remember that he had 250x 150x250, but Im going to go with 250 x 400 x 250. with XM 15K unless I can get Phoenix 14K in a SE bulb

Skimmerking 01-12-2011 10:03 PM

Made some progress on the wood, here is a few shots so far/.....

Going with the mission style I like it simple. going to stain with a walnut stain. now is here is problem. I have to wait 2 weeks for the birch wood to come in to make the doors. However Dwayne showed me some maple that i can mix with it so i stained them both and I will get you a pic uploaded so you can see the difference. the maple is a bite lighter, however I can do another coat or 2 on it.
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e1...4/DSC06314.jpg

Here is the 15" shelf tower with adjusting shelves I will be cutting out a feeding hole and a Vortech hole so I can move the powerhead around.

I'm hoping to stain the whole stand by this weekend and caulk around the seams in the right tower where the sump and Skimmer is going to be. may be next week to start filling it

Lance 01-12-2011 10:13 PM

Looking good Mike. Can't wait to see it stained.

kien 01-12-2011 10:14 PM

Cabinetry looking great so far. So, I'm curious though, how is it going to be moved from the workshop into where it's going to go? Does it come apart fairly easily?

where is the heck soes it say that TOny you are a JACK!!!!!!!!!

it pulls apart in 4 Sections not to worry man, its all taken care off.

hillegom 01-12-2011 10:28 PM

What?
no tasting of the wood?

MitchM 01-12-2011 10:28 PM

Well, that's going to look a whole lot better than anything you could get at Home Depot!

Maple is tricky to stain. You could coat it with a light cut of shellac for a sealer to help even out the maple first. Otherwise it could turn blotchy.
You friend Dwayne looks like he knows what he's doing though.
