New FTS of the zoas. Really liking them in there own dedicated system, they seem to be enjoying it so so far so good.

I don't know if I missed it in your thread but are all the zoas in this tank now or did you leave a few in the other tank?

Dipped and moved every colony to the new tank. This way I also eliminate the possibility of the tangs eating them:neutral:. Apparently it happens pretty often.

Yeah, zoas are like candy to many fishes and inverts. I had a few frags of zoas I bought from OA and had them in the frag tank for a few days. Overnight something ate all of one frag and most of the other two. I searched the tank and found a hermit I didn't know was in there. I guess he was hungry!
Both tanks look great by the way.

Zoaelite 07-11-2010 07:51 PM

Few updates:

Tank is running smoothly, the zoa tank is going through a bit of an algae cycle (Lots of hair algae and a bit of cyano). I finally decided on rock rubble for the zoa tank substrate, really happy with how it looks and should help with growing them out. Waiting on a colony of blue hornets and some nicer zoas from Bayside, will post photos when they come in.

So far the zoa tank has a tail spot blenny, a radiance wrasse and my 4 baby bangii's (Once they are grown they will go to a new home) but I can't decide If I want anything else. Anyone have experience with Orchid Dotty backs or Neon Dotty backs, looking to add a little color so suggestions are welcome.

The main tank is doing well, very happy with the doser results as It seems I have had a bit of a growth spurt in the last month. I'm really enjoying the open sand bed with the zoas being in there own tank, it makes the tank look much more open. I followed Kien's advice and have purchased another cleaner and pair of fire shrimp to boost my live food count, never knew that fire shrimp also cleaned but now I have a whole cleaner station going on with all the fish regularly partaking.

Will grab photos tonight If I can steal the camera from Devan.

Thanks John, I'm very happy with the way it's worked out. The zoas seem to be really enjoying the new tank, I'm not going to frag any of my colonies for atleast 6 months as I would like more of a grown in look.

I'm also contemplating some species of dwarf angel but I have a history of coral eaters so it's still up in the air.

Wingin It 07-11-2010 10:31 PM

I had the neon dottyback, nice fish except that it kept picking on other fish constantly. Had to get 'em out before I lost my firefish!

Thanks Green , ended up picking up a Bi-Color Dotty back from Elite. So far so good but I'm watching him closely as the species is known to be reallllyyy aggressive.

Zoaelite 07-17-2010 04:28 AM

Took some new photos of the zoa tank and the main tank, actinics are the only things on so everything is a little blue washed. My Bi-Color made my radiant wrasse jump , I was going to make a lid tomorrow but I guess it's a learning lesson.

Zoaelite 07-17-2010 04:36 AM

I also made up a batch of fish and coral food last night with a few new ingredients, looking for a little insight as I added a bunch (Over 175g) of Multi greens herb supplement. Here are the ingredients:

http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/7939/p1130100o.jpg

Anyone see anything that could be dangerous? I fed a whack load of it last night and everything went crazy (Including one chalice that never exhibits a feeding responce ).

Also added into the mix was:
2 lbs Muscles
2 lbs Manilla Clams
15 Giant Shrimp
7 Large Oysters
4 Minced Carrots
1 Half Head Broccoli
1 Bottle Selcon
1 Bottle SeaChem Amino acid supplement
2 Bottles of Coral food soak
1 Half Bottle Reefroids
1 Half Bottle freeze dried phyto

Thank you! So far so good with the greens, still exhibiting a great feeding response but it's a little early to tell if I will put it into the next batch.

I also started dosing sponge power and Pohs coral vitalizer but I think I shocked my tank a little. Had some burnt tips and lost half of my giant green monti, but I have a feeling it had something to do with my skimmer and pellet reactor. Don't know how long this was going on for but my pellet reactor stopped tumbling and all the pellets fussed together into one mass (Which I believe might of released some Hydrogen Sulfide), of course at the same time my skimmer air intake clogged with salt. Both of these compounded with my over dosing of zeovit to damage some of my SPS but everyone is coming back nicely after fixing the problems and slowing down on the Zeo.

The first pick zoas are Miami Hurricanes, they come in a few color morphs but I have never found anything as vivid as these ones (Courtesy of Red Coral).

Lunar eclipse palys are called Lunars because they have a bright red fringe with a black center, these ones are a solid red color throughout.

Zoaelite 08-02-2010 10:04 PM

Sometimes this hobby drives me crazy, pinpointing the problem causer in a tank full of variables has left me exhausted and little worn down . Any extra insight to what's causing my RTS/ STN and how to fix it would be greatly appreciated!

About 2 weeks before I started feeding my new food I had the tips of around 4 different SPS bleach on me, all my levels seemed to be in check so I did a water change and purchased some new carbon. A few days later I discovered that my skimmer air intake had plugged, my Phosban reactor intake had plugged and my biopellets had conjoined into one mass in the reactor (Talk about things compounding fast). I fixed all of those problems but I was a little too late and my giant green monti cap bleached in patches and then pretty much RTN'd. I did a few more water changes and let the tank sit for a few days.

After about 4 days of not touching anything I re-tested my water to find the following parameters:

Salinity- 1.025
pH- 8.0
Temp- 81 degrees
Ca- 440ppm
Alk- 5 DKH
Nitrate- 20ppm
Phosphate-??? (API need's to get a better kit because trying to tell the different between Light clear green and lighter clear green is a waste of my time...)

In trying to correct the 5 DKH I totally miscalculated how much baking soda to add and somehow spiked my ALK to 14 (Yes keep reading to see how I pretty much destroy my tank ). Around the same time I also started dosing the Prodibio Reef booster supplement along with Sponge power and Pohs coral vitalizer. So now I have been doing diluted water changes to bring it back down to an acceptable level but have practically screwed my water parameters. Surprisingly most of the SPS seemed to get a color boost but now I'm battling STN/ RTN from the base of my corals (On 4 new acros).

To compound my confusion my brother was nice enough to come over today and test my water with his kits. Between our 4 different ALK test kits I have a reading of 7,9,10 and 11...

My zoas which I use as an ALK barometer have not been phased by any of this (Actually 2 colonies that were on the melt have since stopped).

My Chalice collection is all doing very well with the exception of 2, 1 because of strings from a neighboring coral and the other had lost a very small amount of tissue.

The fish are plump and fat as always, even more confusing is that the initial 4 SPS that had tip burn have stopped burning and are making a slow recovery.

Here are some photos of the colonies bleaching from the base up, should I be fragging these up? Would a dip help them out? I have the option of bringing them over to my brothers tank, anyone have experience with moving an SPS that has STN?

whats your mg at man.....and do you dose potassium?.......frag off a few nubs(cut well into the living coral) before the stn progresses any further.....sometimes you can stop the stn-ing by crazy glueing the edge of the living and dead tissue......

Last time I tested Mag (About a week ago) it was at 1350ppm (Elos test kit), I picked up some of the tailored aquatics Pot 80 but really haven't dosed it religiously. Thanks for the tips Doug, I will try that tonight on a few of them see If I can't reverse the damage.

I can't even imagine having my whole tank crash this is driving me a little crazy with just a few of my SPS! How's the tank running for you man? Have you transferred any of the livestock back from Xtreams tank?

Zoaelite 08-11-2010 10:20 PM

Couple Updates:

Well my parameters are finally where they should be (At least with the big 3), I have purchased the Prodibio Reef kit of Oceanic corals and will see how this works to lower my nitrate level (Currently resting at 20ppm). I re-aquascaped the tank after the crash and I'm very happy with how it's looking.

I will grab some photos when I get my camera back but I decided to go with 2 giant islands, one containing all my chalices and the other the fragments of my SPS. On the good side I have a whack load of room for some coral, I think I will be placing a bunch of frags in place to see what sort of growth I can get out of the system.

Coral is forgiving but only to a certain stress point .

Zoaelite 08-14-2010 07:01 AM

Added my prodiBio to the tank today and snapped a couple photos after the lights were off. The zoas are with there night light and I quickly turned the actinics on for the main tank.

Its a little early to see but after 3 weeks of dosing Reef Booster my zoas seem to be a fair bit plumper and healthier looking. Really excited to see what the rest of the line will do, hopefully I can drop my Nitrates down to zero.

Thanks, by that time my tank should be nice and grown in so I will have many a frag to spare. All the fish are sleeping, took the photo at around 1:00am.

Wrasses are from Ocean City, they just got a coral shipment in. My Mcoskers was beating the crap out of the female (I think she was trying to be a home wreaker and steal her man ). So they will be placed in the zoa tank if I can catch them.

Hmmm, just hope that Dotty back is nice to them.
