The Live Aquaria database is pretty extensive and user friendly. I think you would have to find some way to improve upon their info before building an entire database for yourself.

A Wiki is a pretty good idea though, I've subscribed.

Blue World Aquariums started a "fish wiki" a little while ago. Its pretty cool with rewards for contributing. I could ask Spencer what he thinks about including corals and if we all put in some effort if could be a good resource for corals in no time. There is a scoreboard for the people who contribute the most, turns out RiceReef from here is the leader. Nice work Wayne!

If corals were included we would have to come up with a better suited name...
Aquarium Wiki?
Reef Wiki?
.......

Any thoughts?

I like everyones input on this, its great. I like Reef wiki, I was originally thinking CoralDB..
Im just messing around with different cms/wiki packages and figuring out which one will be best suited for the job

I have an issue with contributing to Blue World's WIKI as it would be their property and that could cause some problems.

How about we either contribute to wikipedia.com entries by including a hobbyists section for each existing entry or create new ones as needed and then build a relevant index to the wikipedia.com entries. Or build new wiki from scratch.

I think expanding on wikipedia.com entries is the best solution as it is independent, already hosted and already contains LOTS of coral and fish entries.

Here are two screenshots of what I have been working on (slowly).
Let me know what you think.
I will soon be putting up a live preview that you will be able to play around with.

It wouldn't be hard to add corals to this. I would be more than willing to listen to suggestions for encouraging people to contribute.

Snaz, as a store we can offer real rewards for contributions. However I am open to removing the association from the store if that's what would push it to be a real benefit to the hobby. I'm interested to hear your concerns in regards to the wiki being our property...maybe that's something we could address?

Not meaning to detract from the OP...that site looks nice. :)

You are a step ahead of me on this one . If you would like to add corals then all the power to you. I think people are mostly concerned with the ownership and the openness of the wiki.
For now I will host the wiki on my own connection so people can have a look. Please bare in mind that it wont be useful until YOU contribute.
Hopfully we can get a good database going whether its me or not.
