Things have noticeably and significantly slowed down in cow town. Orders are smaller and longer in between ordering periods. Custom orders can be done, but you're waiting longer and the selection may be be a broad.

Thank you. FTS from today, October 22, 2016. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...26cf2aec13.jpg http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...424d90a3e3.jpg http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...7861e4c9d7.jpg Dinner yesterday https://vimeo.com/188429860 Algae growth is increasing and I'm debating adding making adjustments to my two skimmers. I'm always fighting phosphates lately and it's definitely from my dry food. I've been dialling back where I can; feeding less overall, but more frequently. However that can only take me so far. I really wanted to invest in another LED fixture, but water quality is more important. Glass cleaning frequency is down from every 5 days to every 3.5 days. It's the most labour intensive part of all my reef keeping activities. So while very minor in the grand scheme of all things, it's noticeable and has been a great indicator. Rare shot from the opposite end. Today we had a flood. Our drain backed up from roots in the clay pipe. This also happened a number of years ago. Thankfully we were home and mostly prepared. We have a wet vac and buckets to collect the water. Most everything in one half of the basement is in rubbermaids, or elevated. My store of extra drywall, my freezer, a wall and a carpet cleaner are write offs. Same goes for a brand new mattress set I was storing. Boo.
Thankfully, no damage to the tank. The stand the QT system and refugium use was submerged for awhile. It is kiltz painted, but I suspect it will have to be replaced. Tank stand was also submerged, but it's fully enclosed and sealed, also, steel. Sent from space riding a T-Rex |
I'll need to replace the panels on my display side now due to water damage.

I feel your pain. Who's picking on the brain coral? And..that end shot! The tank goes on forever!

Emperor. His current nick name is sneaky DB. He will pull off anything on top of the container to get access to the rainbow.
He is on the cusp of being voted off the island. Sent from space riding a T-Rex |

Thats a great shot of the vlamingi! (...pretty sure thats what it is...lol)

Love your fish collection!
|
So Sneaky DB got a new home?
Jeez, that flooding really sucks. It was septic? |
Thanks! Yes, I shall send the Emperor onwards if he doesn't improve. The thing is the guy doesn't eat corals (SPS, LPS) or clams, so it's a really really hard choice. Right now I just keep getting new containers to replace the old ones for the rainbow brain. Also, the extra fruit is delicious! Yum!
The flooding was just plain water from my dish and clothes washers. Oh and probably some of my shower. I've had a remediation company paid for and sent by my insurance come in to check things out. But the damage is barely more than my deductible so it's not worth a claim. I ordered a calcium reactor a while back to help with the depletion ramp up. I'm hoping it comes into stock soon. I'm finding dosing with the set up I have almost unable to keep up. I need bigger containers for my solutions. I think I'll try out the wine and beer making stores to see about some silicone corks and cheap airline. I'm adding some of my spare LED lights onto the existing rack. I'm finding some corals are reaching in directions that need better illumination. I'm starting with the left side. I've also been adding a little more sand to the display, this is my last attempt at filling the blank space at the front of the tank. Other than the reactor, I have no current purchase plans for the tank. I'm hoping I can ride out winter and spring with just regular maintenance. Of course I will replace the panels around the tank, but that doesn't count. :P Sent from space riding a T-Rex |
Which calcium reactor did you go with?
|
What size dosing containers are you using right now and how long to they last?

Depending on the product I use either 4L jugs made extra concentrated or a 5g bucket, also concentrated. I go through lots of magnesium, some calcium and an ok amount for dKH. Over the summer I switched to a more expensive salt for my SPS and found no great improvement in much, except for the additional cost. Quote:
I picked an octopus brand, but I was at an LFS yesterday over the lunch hour and the owner thinks the company isn't sending it as it's been quite a few months now. I'm now researching a replacement. Hopefully to be set up over the holidays for easier initial monitoring. I've also decided it's time to regime my emperor. I'm really sad about the decision, but it's best for all. Finally, after YEARS of trying to find an upgraded magnet I nearly gave up. Yay for random finds that don't require the CDN-US exchange rate be involved.
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...c50d98d407.jpg Now all I need is a Calcium Reactor, and a few pheasant balls to proclaim my tank completely built! Sent from space riding a T-Rex |
Went to Edmonton this weekend and was thoroughly disappointed. Prices were all 20%+ more for the same products and no stock anywhere. I'm sad, I packed coolers and everything.

Did you try Marine Experience? He usually has lots of selection. Has a website now too.

Where's the place to go in Calgary these days? |
Livestock mostly was my goal. However there were some drygoods; T5 lamps, dosing chemicals, reactor media, back up parts/equipment.
Um, I'm actually not all that sure on where in Calgary anymore. I've been roaming between Oceans, Wai's and Pisces to meet my needs lately. I don't get a lot of opportunity to shop anymore, as I either buy in bulk or I'm cash flush when the stores are livestock poor. :( But sometimes things do align and I end up with bags on my office floor while I work out the last couple hours of my day. Some photos from the tank cam. It really shows the green from non-low iron glass. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...90405de73e.jpg http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...a06cd5cd58.jpg Sent from space riding a T-Rex |
What are you using for a tank cam?
|
Quote:
I have a cheap Foscam I got from Amazon. I think I paid either just over or under $100 for it. Does night view and can be remotely controlled. It's set up explicitly to avoid spying on people in the space, it's just for fish peeping. Note the difference in the quality when streamed via the Apex vs the just Foscam app; above via Apex, below Foscam. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...f4d244a006.jpg Sent from space riding a T-Rex |
Thanks for the info. And wow that is a noticeable difference. I guess if the camera is exporting to something other than it's own native app that it's somehow sending out a lower resolution image?
How do you have the camera mounted? It looks like a fairly low viewing angle? In my case I'd probably have to mount it on the ceiling like a security cam or something. In which case it would be aimed a bit downward. Probably not the best angle for viewing but it would still solve the superficial want of looking at the tank when not at home. And the worst case scenario someone of hacking in to spy would see the back of my head if I was looking at the tank, and well, I kinda see that as being more their problem than mine. |
