I use Instant Ocean. The cyano this time around is definitely nutrient based. While I was on holidays my house sitter added at least an extra 2 cups of pellet foods to the tank over a 14 day period in addition to that one of my yellow tangs died during that same time period which just made things worse. :( Thanks for the recommendation though.

Ahhhh I see that makes sense.

Still a way to go, keep up the good work

mseepman 09-18-2014 06:50 PM

Much improved! Are you just blowing it off? Or big water changes too?

michika 09-18-2014 10:04 PM

Thanks guys.

In the beginning when it happened I did quite a few large water changes and manually removed as much of the rotting food as possible from the tank. That was the end of July and early August. The rest of August I focused on manually removing the cyano, at first every day, and later every 2nd day.

Now I'm at the point where I blow off the cyano every 2-3rd day, and I usually scrape my glass concurrently. I used to only have to clean my glass approximately every 10 days. The last piece of the puzzle is dialing in my parameters; my system sucks back magnesium like no tomorrow and I'm constantly needing to bump my dKH right now. The fine tuning of parameters on a system this size is not that fun sometimes.

michika 09-22-2014 02:48 PM

Low magnesium this morning after skipping testing Friday through Sunday. I need a better way than dosing to maintain my magnesium.

Mg per 100ppm @ 700g = 11 cups Mag. Sulphate or 9 1/3 cups Mag. Chloride

brotherd 09-22-2014 03:20 PM

What is mag reading now? I can't seem to get mine over 1100.

reefwars 09-22-2014 03:22 PM

what's the drop daily?

Chloride and sulphate mix I assume?

How and when do you dose , a 100ppm even monthly is very high

Salinity is correct and calibrated?

What Salt mix?

What are you adding? It takes a lot to raise mag small amounts will take forever to raise

reefwars 09-22-2014 03:31 PM

Consumption of mag though is very little in respect , even in large tanks , ppm is still ppm ......unless mag is removed.

It's most likely the water changes and low mag amount in the salt

me?

My mag dropped to 1240ppm this morning an hour after lights on. I'm just hand dosing right now to get things back into line (1300-1350ppm) as my tank works through this surge. Then it will be back to the dosing pump and daily "top offs". It will probably take me 4-10 days, of hand dosing, to get it back where I like it.

The usual daily drop is less than 10ppm, but over 5ppm, if we assume test kits to be THAT accurate. This "growth" spurt isn't usual in that the draw is higher, but it's not wholly unexpected as it does seem to happen, the spurts, with a certain regularity.

My clams have some giant new ridges that developed significantly over the last week. (Finally, they haven't done much growing since July) There is quite a bit of new coraline algae on the rocks and glass in my refugium since last weekend, my LPS and somke SPS are growing, the LPS much faster than SPS.

- still battling cyano which has gotten worse again this week. Seriously considering using red slime remover as nothing I do seems to be working.
- started making the canopy panels and a floor to ceiling panel to complete the forward facing side.

I need to find a way to use a proper camera to take photos soon...this whole having a camera but no computer with which to interface is becoming quite the issue. Oh well, one day.

Found a haul of goods at Concept; scopas tang, salt and an AI Hydra 52. Local stores are so important to have and to support. :)

FishyFishy! 10-04-2014 09:17 PM

Love the progression shots!!! I think every tank thread should have those.

michika 10-04-2014 09:29 PM

Thank you.

I do try to make a point to keep up with them. They remind me where I started and how far I've come. And at the same time that I need to cave and cover the back glass, I don't like how the light from the fishroom shows through so brightly.

Is that eggcrate in the over flow box? If so what is it's purpose?

No particular purpose. I was trying out utilizing different combs and eggcrate to see the effect on the overflow sound.

The new Hydra 52 was added yesterday afternoon. It really brightens up the left side. At first glance I am now unsure if I need to add at third a final 52 to the set up. Right now to my eyes the colour is perfect, the intensity is just right. Unfortunately I don't know how to properly represent this in photos, yet.

The lighting now goes:
SOL Blue | Hydra 52 | SOL Blue | Kessil 360w | SOL Blue | Hydra 52 | SOL Blue

It's been a long time.Way overdue for an update:)

Myka 06-13-2015 04:08 AM

That last update was great and you got no comments wth? How are you liking the lights?

Skimmer Juice 06-13-2015 04:33 AM

cool mix of lights , how do you like the kessil compared to the other fixtures?

michika 07-18-2015 09:27 PM

The LAST big upgrade

I actually really like my lights. I love the kessil for spot lighting, e.g. for my bay of clams or plates. Its incredibly easy to use. I feel like I got a great fixture for the price and I will definitely be purchasing another in the future. For spread though and price I am pleased with my Hydras.

Eventually I do want to add two more fixtures, probably Hydra types, and kessils as needed.

My fish lately are just plumping out. I haven't added anything to my tank for awhile. I did add a fish to my QT yesterday. I'm very excited for this fish, I've wanted one for over a decade now.

My tank otherwise is just chugging along. I wouldn't mind adding a second auto feeder to my system, but its not something I really need. So in the mean time I just work at keeping my parameters where they should be while seeing how fat I can make my fish. I'd like to add more SPS, but I just can't justify the cost some of the local stores are wanting per frag right now.

brotherd 07-19-2015 04:56 PM

Sailfin or Scopas tang? Looks like you were in front of Ocean Creation.

DAVE 07-19-2015 06:40 PM

Black tang.

Next on the list....GEM tang :D

brotherd 07-19-2015 07:24 PM

I had to look up what a black tang was. Cough!Cough! Wow!!!

Delphinus 07-20-2015 04:17 AM

Wow, sweet tang!

Snappy 07-20-2015 05:09 AM

Nice!

michika 07-20-2015 01:48 PM

Thank you.

As of this morning Batman has made it to day 4/42 in his great QT adventure.

I also ordered a webcam this morning so I can creep on him, and eventually my tank from work.

Here is his original packaging.

http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/07...0d76445e24.jpg

And some of the rest of the gang. Excuse the algae, I just returned from driving coast to coast via the U.S. :)

Ohhhh nice tang. Beautiful. They had one in Big Als when I was there in June. He was trying to sell it to me, but did not wish to put it in my 50g and the new tank was just being picked up. Look forward to seeing it swim with the others.

michika 07-24-2015 03:22 PM

Thanks Doug,

I think I may be the same fish. The guy said they'd had it since December. I negotiated a discounted sales price before I took him home.

I installed a remote webcam yesterday so I can creep on my tank from work. I've integrated it into my apex, but now I need to figure out proper placement before making the feed public.

Damn! you got him before I could! I was just waiting on my new tank lol.

How does the web cam look with the led's?

michika 07-24-2015 06:33 PM

The LAST big upgrade

It's not bad with the lights on. My camera has an infrared option which I am still trying to make friends with. I need to move some rocks to get a better view down the length of the tank.

Hahaha! Batman is all mine. What kind of new tank are you waiting on?

im upgrading from a 48lx18wx16h to a 60lx30wx30h

I hope they at least gave you a couple hundred off

btw your tank is looking amazing!!

The LAST big upgrade

Sounds very nice! Thank you. It's still got a ways to go but it's coming.

I was able to negotiate a more than reasonable discount. :) He is pretty thin, for my tastes, so he is being fattened up in QT as much as possible.

Sent from space while riding a T-Rex.

michika 08-05-2015 02:49 PM

IP camera is mounted and functional! I need to figure out how to make the feed public and I need three uninterrupted hours so I can change the rock work for a better view..

The camera has a infrared option, but it reflects poorly with the glass right now. More photos when the lights come on.

QT pré-water change tonight.

And the promised lights on image from the camera. Glass cleaning and a small rock relocation party is required in the near future.

I need to go, as always, bump my magnesium.

I picked up some beautiful SPS and an anularis angel from a very cool local hobbiest today. We have a great local community here.
