Anyone want to take a bet how long the Caferope bridge will last?

Coralgurl 06-21-2013 06:08 PM

Flood alert just issued for Banff.....controlled evacuation of entire downtown Calgary.

ChizerBunoi 06-21-2013 06:46 PM

ATTENTION!!!

On the news they just announced that the City of Calgary might have to turn off the power grid which will affect the majority (or entirety) of the city. This is dependant on how much more severe the flooding gets.

I just checked the weather network and we are to get 10 - 20mm of rain today. That plus all the water surplus from the mountains.

Please plan appropriately.

mrhasan 06-21-2013 06:52 PM

Anyone knows where I can find heatpacks???

ChizerBunoi 06-21-2013 06:53 PM

Charge your cell phone. Fill your bathtubs with water incase water services is out. Prepare to be without electricity. Make sure you have emergency supplies.

OH man, I've been having nightmares about my tank crashing all week and now it's a reality.

If you have a camping stove, you could use that to heat up water.

Nop I don't have that :( I don't have car plus the transit is disrupted (I think?) so I will have to get supplies (batteries food etc) from safeway/london drugs. Going there right now to see what I can find.

Coralgurl 06-21-2013 07:10 PM

Good luck! Just drove by Walmart by my place and it is a zoo!!

London Drugs may have some useful appliances! Good luck. If you can get to a Canadian Tire, they would have some camping supplies. A propane BBQ would also work.

Is there a link to this? Nothing on Calgary blog or enmax suggesting anything close to this. Most of the city is not effected by flooding so shutting down the entire city seems unlikely at best. Neighboring areas could be shut down due to power grid layouts. In times like this lets wait for credible info before cause mass panics.

At least I have 45 Gallons of Ro/DI drinking water ready to go :)

I was suppose to go buy some more Mysis from Wai's a few days ago and now I am completly out... I don't think that I will be venturing to the North for a few days.

Anyone know there is anywhere in the SW Evergreen area that sells Mysis?

Dollar store.

Something else that works is those hot hands/hot toes things for the winter. Double or triple bag in ziplocks and put in water.

Most freshwater stores will sell mysis.

No it is just hear say from CTV news. Nothing released from the city or Enmax yet. I'm just saying be prepared incase the worst happens.

Jakegr 06-21-2013 07:34 PM

I wouldn't feed fish for the next couple of days if there is a concern about power outages.

I heard the same thing on global and 660 news. They said its a possibility, not probability.

My community is not affected by the river floods, but all the storm drains are being overloaded and the pooling on the roads is substantial. All the cities systems are being taxed at the moment and who can say what can affect the power.

I don't have a generator and debating picking one up....

fishoholic 06-21-2013 08:18 PM

I heard on the ctv news that the evacuated areas were going to have the power cut. The news never mentioned anything about the other areas. I really feel bad for everyone who's effected by the floods

mrhasan 06-21-2013 08:33 PM

Went to canadian tire and london drugs and they don't have heat packs. If there's a blackout, I will just cover the tank top with styrofoam and put a blanket over it and hope for the best. Sorry for such concern about my tank but thats the only property that I have over here :(

Don't forget to aerate very well.

sphelps 06-21-2013 09:52 PM

Latest update suggests nothing relating to additional power or water shut off for unaffected zones. Those outside the zones are better off staying home rather than adding to the traffic issues to chase down supplies and generators.

Coralgurl 06-21-2013 10:45 PM

The mayor tweeted this and it hit the news....

https://mobile.twitter.com/nenshi

The sun is now shining here but still dark clouds around.

We didn't head out today and I think I'm overloaded on this. Not to minimize the impact on those affected but gotta tune out for a bit. Think I will do a water change.....

sphelps 06-21-2013 11:16 PM

No water changes  Unless you're dumping water outside. Help reduce load on treatment plants to prevent water from being shut off for others.

Skimmerking 06-21-2013 11:28 PM

omg this is so sad to see, I hope all is doing well and worrying about there safety. Sphelps how is the water out by you

Everything is normal by me, water seems fine, not even raining anymore. We have a canal behind the house that often rises with heavy rain and snow melt but it hasn't risen at all that I can tell.

Oh and I think the issue with Calgary water right now is treatment of freshwater not raw so people should refrain from using water especially for our luxury tanks ;)

Shame on any retailer selling bottled water at a jacked up price since there was no boil water advisory(I am updated hourly)and there wont be.Don't believe tweets and facebook rumors peeps!this no better than looting IMO.At least in Calgary, downstream may be a differant issue.

Baker 06-22-2013 10:33 PM

Yup, just heard that home depot is selling 24 bottles of water for $45. Needless to say home depot can go f*ck themselves when it comes to getting my business.

That's just wrong!!!

11purewater 06-22-2013 10:50 PM

Events like this will bring out the best and worst in society, the thing is not to forget either.

fishytime 06-23-2013 01:57 AM

Ive been quiet through all this, mostly because its hard to say much when your heart is in your throat....anyone who knows me knows how much I love Calgary and how hard of a decision it was for me to move to E-town to be with my Girly.....My heart broke seeing all the devastation in and around C-town:sad:.....I am grateful that all my friends and acquaintances and all my family are safe and sad that they have to go through all this

I heard that they jacked the price of gas in Canmore when everyone was trying to get out....really pathetic that big billion dollar companies would use a disaster like this to gouge people in need.....CLASSY!

Nate 06-23-2013 01:58 AM

Home Depot

I have heard from unconfirmed sources that those people were buying from the individual bottles by the door, expecting to get the 24 pack of a different brand discount as they were out of the other brand

Just saying

Proteus 06-23-2013 02:58 AM

From what I understand its a criminal offense to gouge public with high prices during state of emergency

This is because Home Depot buys the bottles as individual bottles and pays $X.XX per bottle they do not get a flat rate just like gas stations and corner stores.

So when you buy the "Flat" its actually 2$ a bottle x 24 bottles which works out to $48 plus deposit/tax. They are not trying to screw anyone over its just how they buy the water to start with.

Sorry to say that people are getting hit with this but thats how it is. You cant expect a deal on something the store itself is not getting a deal on, just because its packed in a plastic wrap doesn't mean its considered a flat of water.
