Lol Brett, Looking good!

I have a thread title suggestion...

Lastlight's New Light

Cheers,

Chris

Installed my new Kessil a150w Sky Blue tonight and I officially love my LED lit tank! Absolutely zero colour banding and the colour temperature to my eyes is somewhere extremely close to that of the old 150w halide that was in here. Between 11 and 12k I'd say. Looks very natural to my eyes with barely any blue. Perhaps just a smidgen dimmer looking than the halide with a few more shadowy spots up near the top in the back but EVERY last colour in the corals looks improved and the shimmer is incredible. I need to make a screen top now... I'm rolling the dice for a few days with my neon goby but so far he's lived exclusively on the sandbed from what I've observed.

Besides the corals, clowns and neon goby which I managed photos of I've also got:

- 2 peppermint shrimp (who are starting to mow down my aiptasia)
- pistol shrimp and yellow shrimp goby pair

I'm on the lookout for a tailspot now but won't pull the trigger until my mesh top is in place.

Here's some pics! Some are fairly crappy but they'll be handy to track growth later on blah blah blah. A big thank-you to SteveConn who was super kind in giving me back a clipping of my beloved purple gorg. Time to grow that sumbeatch back!

Dude is that blue clove I see in your tank.

Dez 11-14-2012 02:50 PM

What happened to "I'm going to stick with halides cause LEDs suck" (my paraphrase of you and your thoughts)

That's Kien's way of welcoming me back to the hobby. Freebie Pests FTW! (thanks btw)

Even a moderately warm day outside caused my temperature to hit 82 or 83 with the canopy and heater that happens to also glow lol. Decided to take the plunge mostly due to that. The cannon style LEDs have some of the spirit of a halide while running cool. Time will tell how this teeny 35W wonder performs but my needs are a lot more modest these days.

Leah 11-14-2012 02:54 PM

Sexy tank you got going there.

mseepman 11-14-2012 03:00 PM

Welcome to the LED side...the tank is looking great! So glad to have you back on here.

lol nice, its just a matter of time till ur tank is full of them lol. i'm just waiting on when the sps bug will bite you again lol.

kien 11-14-2012 03:23 PM

I love your torch!

Let me know if your cloves don't make it. There's plenty more where they came from!

Seriously tho, am I the only one on canreef that actually likes clove polyps?! Fuzzy purple on rocks is prettier than brown IMO. Yes they have taken over some rocks but they do not irritate any corals that ive noticed. Mine cloves are always outcompeted when other corals (sps/lps) start encrusting on their territory.

i don't know about your Polyps but the ones i got took over my chalice and zoas so i despise them lol

JDigital 11-14-2012 03:44 PM

That torch coral is sweet! Although it got one head to many, I think you need to frag it!

okay, I can kinda see them competing fiercely with zoas LOL. I don't have any of those. I had a watermellon chalice that outcompeted my cloves. I dunno man, they seem fairly easy to control to me. Whenever there is a patch that i want to clear I just take a hard bristled toothbrush and scrub the area clean. Or smother them with a bit of epoxy for a day or two then remove the epoxy. Nice clean surface again.

Thanks guys! I'm excited to tinker with it and just appreciate having a slice of the reef again without all the overhead.

Once I'm using ro/di and have some ROX and HC GFO going I'll maybe grab a few nice pieces and see what happens. I still see this tank as more of an easy / laid back reef with lots of movement.

I told you if you're a brave lad and don't mind the aiptasia let's do a trade. My peps actually cleaned all the pests off the torch skeletons from what I can see...

As for the cloves I really like'em. They're on their own rock but I wouldn't be surprised to see them spread somehow. it's crazy easy to access the insides of this tank so if I need to scrape some gsp or cloves once in a while that's ok with me. My first task is to blade most of the mushrooms off the rockwork!

Douglas 11-14-2012 09:01 PM

That tank looks much better than day "one", when i saw it first. Looks good Brett! The Six line wrasse is getting along perfectly, thanks again, Doug

lastlight 11-14-2012 10:02 PM

Thanks Doug glad to hear he's being a model citizen.

Yeah tank has a long way to go but is certainly improving. This rock was infested with aiptasia. I actually just scoured the tank and it's been two days since I first noticed my shrimp eating the pests. I can't find a single one now

The Grizz 11-15-2012 12:32 AM

Is THAT an LED I see there Mr. President of the "losers without LED'S" club?

Very sweet little set up there big guy, looks great! :thumb:

mike31154 11-15-2012 12:49 AM

Great photos & fine looking tank. The Kessil looks like it's a perfect fit.

lastlight 11-26-2012 07:40 PM

Borrowed my father-in-law's macro again. I have to drag my couch out from the wall and manually unplug things to kill flow in the tank so I never bothered. A few turned out decently sharp even with flow in the tank though. The curved glass in the front and even the stuff on the sides somehow makes shooting pictures in this tank very difficult. There are corals in some places I will never be able to take nice shots of unfortunately.

BlueTang<3 12-09-2012 10:10 PM

Sweet picks whens the upgrade comming

lastlight 12-10-2012 01:53 AM

Oh geez thought hadn't really crossed my mind a whole bunch. Should I?

ChizerBunoi 12-10-2012 02:14 AM

Nah take it easy for a while and enjoy the easy maintenance of a nano.

lastlight 12-10-2012 02:28 AM

in the end all i want is a tank that's still very modestly sized but has a sump. A sump and getting rid of the bowed front will be the only reason I replace the tank. It's already loosely planned for next summer =)

BlueTang<3 12-10-2012 03:02 AM

Lol sweet you got some awsome corals in that little nano.

Thanks Wes it's coming along =)

Today I did something a little strange for me and purchased an mp10. i've always dreaded the ecotech noise but was so frustrated trying to get flow right in the tank using a tunze nano stream. the flow is too focused and to get flow right in the centre of the tank i had to turn the perimeter of the scape into a jacuzzi! i came close by aiming my flared return flow into the nano stream to scatter a bit of flow into the middle but it wasn't good enough.

I was anxious to correct this because Greg (Snappy) generously agreed to give me back a frag of my old hoeksemai and i'll do whatever it takes to keep it happy. I'm running it in reef crest mode and topping out at 60% power. Yes there is the typical whirring sound but it doesn't get all that loud at 60% and we barely noticed it after the kids went to bed. with the kids awake they become dead silent =)

I only had one spot to mount the thing but the beauty of these things seems to be it barely matters where they go. I have absolutely perfect flow everywhere in the tank now. Bye bye Tunze! They've got a place in larger tanks for sure but I'm a convert. I'll add one more mp10 when I eventually transfer to a slightly larger tank next year.

If this wasn't a family board i'd use a little profanity to convey how much i love this thing.

Here's two really bad phone pics of some new coral I picked up today.

Massive war favia from ocean creation. about 6 inches across.

Sweet gorg off Greg. He has more gorgs so hit him up!
