Holy heat sink Martin, can't wait to see that beast up and running. BTW I am loving the cabinetry work. Keep those pictures coming.

Cabinet

Awesome job on the cabinet, some real skills there.

martinmcnally 05-08-2012 06:00 AM

Today I made some progress with the hood and the LED build. First I had The Grizz weld together my heatsinks into one sturdy unit with 1 inch spacing between.

http://applications.ccusa.com/martin...k/IMG_1516.jpg

Some coke zero for size reference. The strips along the top are to hold the pocket door wheels that I am installing.

http://applications.ccusa.com/martin...k/IMG_1517.jpg

Heatsinks installed into the hood frame using pocket door kit:

http://applications.ccusa.com/martin...k/IMG_1519.jpg

I am using this pocket door kit so that I can slide the whole light backwards for access into the tank when needed and slide the whole system out for maintenance.

Finally starting to sheet the hood. Back will be sheeted and the sides will be flaps that open upwards.

Haha oh boy. Well the Euro Bracing on the tank actually seems to be keeping it in check pretty good. Hopefully it wont be too much of a problem.

Bblinks 05-10-2012 08:46 PM

Wow Martin that is bad a$$. Can't wait to see more progress.

martinmcnally 09-06-2012 10:23 PM

Finally making some headway with my LED build. You would think I would be on that haha.

http://application.ccusa.com/martin/img_1736.jpg

Each square of LEDs contains 2x Blue, 2x Royal Blue then either 4x Cool White or 2x Cool White & 2x Neutral White.

With this setup there is 24/13 ratio blue to whites so just a little higher than 2/1.

The blank area left is for the overflow.

No Reds or Greens yet. I will add those later once i get this up and running.

Bblinks 09-06-2012 10:31 PM

Sweet Jesus! You need to fire that bad boy up soon. I am dying to see what it looks like.

martinmcnally 09-06-2012 10:35 PM

I just need to add 2 more heatsinks and a bat symbol in front.

bahahahahah! DONE!
http://i1088.photobucket.com/albums/...nks/images.jpg

or we can put a M symbol in front, it will be a call sign for anyone in need of Modular LED! lol

The Grizz 09-07-2012 12:26 AM

And here I thought I had a lot of LED's on my tank. What's the total count on boards Martin?

martinmcnally 09-07-2012 12:39 AM

50x Cool White
64x Royal Blue
64x Blue
24x Neutral White

isnt one of the selling points of LED that it saves you money on your electricity bill????

MKLKT 09-07-2012 01:31 AM

You'll probably be able to see through the floor with that many LEDs. Looks awesome.

lpsreefer 09-07-2012 06:25 PM

Awesome progress! Can't wait to see the finished result!

Wow! At full-power that would be

150w + 192w + 192w + 48w = 582 watts total power

On almost the same size tank, I'm only using (10w emitters):
6x 445 nm blues
6x 455 nm blues
4x 20000k whites
4x 6500k whites
8x 10000k whites

At full power, mine is at 280 watts, but I'm only running the blues at full and the whites at under 40% - I prefer the bluer look (14000k-20000k).

With that many emitters, you must only be planning to have them on at 30% or so I'm guessing.

martinmcnally 12-29-2012 08:05 AM

So unfortunately I've realized that between running Modular LED and a full time job I basically have zero time for anything haha. My DIY LED project has been on hold (oh the irony) for a little while and I have all these boxes of AI Vegas sitting around ugh... too tempting.

Well some of my corals are not looking to happy lately and I have been keeping them going with several LED quick fixes with a Sol, some Ecoxotic Panorama Pros and my old DIY fixtures.

Cue Vegaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

I modified some AI Sol rails (4 foot) adding the pocket door kit wheels
http://applications.ccusa.com/Martin...k/IMG_1940.jpg

Next the Vega array.
http://applications.ccusa.com/Martin...k/IMG_1942.jpg

Put them on the tank:

http://applications.ccusa.com/Martin...k/IMG_1947.jpg
http://applications.ccusa.com/Martin...k/IMG_1946.jpg

And wa-la 1 hour later I finally have a decent LED system. I can't believe how bright it is, (4 might be overkill).

Will take some pics tomorrow of the tank. Its growing in nicely.

The Grizz 12-29-2012 05:04 PM

Well at least you finally did something

martinmcnally 12-29-2012 08:24 PM

Some iPhone pics. Photoshop not working so no color correction.

Very cool. Never would have thought of pocket door wheels for a sliding rack. Gonna have to put that in the back corner of my brain for when I finally get my build going.

Yes and if you use two kits one the opposite direction you can get total sliding control, mine is just front to back. I wanted to be able to push it back out of the way to get into the tank and to be able to slide it out completely for maintenance.

martinmcnally 01-25-2013 04:28 AM

Thought I would post a few pics a few weeks after installing the new AI Vega system. Absolutely loving these LEDs and its showing the coral too. Better colors and getting good growth now.

I have also started dosing Sponge Power and it is definitely improving the color of the coral also. Sorry about the quality I only have my iPhone.

Nice work!

I love those tank dimensions. :)

FishyFishy! 01-25-2013 01:23 PM

Do you think you're going to stick with the vegas? Or are you going to finish your DIY build?

Staying with the Vegas for now.

NIVLEM09 01-25-2013 08:14 PM

nice tank,Martin...i too love my disco ball effect fixture:multi:i'm just waiting on Telus to send me my prepaid visa,so i can order another Vega color:wink:

martinmcnally 01-25-2013 09:30 PM

I don't really get much disco effect unless you look in some deep shadows. I really like the shimmer.

martinmcnally 09-08-2013 08:48 PM

Gotten crazy amounts of growth lately. Check out the tank now.

Haha. Fat thumbs and a I phone. Never even noticed till you said

martinmcnally 12-30-2013 01:20 AM

Thought I would take a few pics tonight.

Finally got my fuge setup and running. Over flow is split between sump and fuge and fuge overflows into the sump using 2 drains. Flow through the fuge is pretty slow. Now I just need some algae and maybe some mangroves.

Also here you can see I got some Bubble Magus containers for my dosing. These make life a lot easier with the fixed line feed tubes and clear so I can see whats going on.
http://applications.ccusa.com/martin/img_0471.jpg

My sump is the same mess as always haha:

One of the RBTAs may have to go soon they are killing a lot of coral.
