Also picked up 4 Sunlight Supply Reef Optix 3 Plus Reflectors, Icecap 250W ballasts, and 14K Phoenix bulbs for the 155 lighting!

So, I'm planning on building the light rack for the 250W Metal Halides on the Bowfront tonight.
Which configuration would you use on a bowfront tank? http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c3...ightLayout.jpg |
#2. The variation in depth front to back is not really as significant as you might think.
You're going with 4x250? I'm not sure you need that much. I'd think 3x250 would be plenty over this size a tank .. |
Yeah I'm thinking because it's going to be an SPS dominated tank, and the reflectors are small in comparison to other models (due to space in my canopy) that 4 would be better.
But open to suggestions? I could definitely just use 3. Would 4 be overkill? I could always pop in a 6500 K bulb and put one of them over the mangrove fuge. |
I agree. The 2nd variation would make the most sense. Those MH will easily cover the width of the tank. 4 is a little overkill and you could easily get away with 3 x 250 if you wanted. Just thinking of the energy savings in your case. Either way, will work though.

Well I suppose that means that I wouldn't have to buy another light for the mangrove fuge. lol. |

The 2nd one is better but 4 will be overkill, I have 3 250watt MH over my 230g and they throw plenty of light |
Looking really really nice!
I run lots of lights but only have all my halides on for 2 hours for a "high noon" effect. They are staggered the rest of the day. Saves on power and heat yet gives everything the blast it needs. |

Are you rockin any SPS with that lighting schedule? |
No, not much SPS, but some. With separate ballasts and a controller you can do what you want. With a 1000 watts on hand you can be the weatherman :)

Need a quick word of advice.....
2 X MP40Wes, or 1 X MP60Wes for the 155 bowfront? That going to be enough or too much? |
2 is always better than 1 IMO. You get better effects when you have coordination of multiple pump heads.

Haha man Tony... Every time I read your signature I laugh so hard! Because its so true...lol But 2 MP40's should suffice for flow on a 6 foot bowfront tank? This tank will be SPS dominated so I want to make sure that I have enough flow. |
This is just my thinking and maybe someone else will see things differently but I think in this case that two MP40's will still probably serve you better than one MP60. The flow from one pump head, regardless of how strong (or wide or fast or whatever) that head may be, can only fan out in one direction and then come back along the edges. All it can do is speed up or slow down but the entire gyre will behave as one. Whereas with two, the flow patterns can interact and ebb and flow differently creating more dynamic patterns that will, for lack of a better way to put it, have more personality.
You can always add more pumps too down the road if you find that the water movement needs more velocity to it, giving you even more flexibility in patterns. Or upgrade to two MP60's. |
2 MP40s will work to begin with but for a stocked SPS tank as it matures it will not be enough. Seem similar sized tanks running 4 MP40s and still be short in some areas for SPS. I'm thinking you''ll need one at each end of the tank and two at the back more centralized.

Ok, so got 8 Bridgelux LED strips (6 X 3W Royal Blue 452nm-455nm LED's each strip). These will replace some T5's for my supplimental actinic lighting. Wired them up last night.... and holy crap these things are bright! Now, I need a suggestion on my mounting oiptions. Here is what I have to choose from:
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c3.../LEDLayout.jpg Also thinking of getting the 60 degree optics as well. Any benefit for these optics? It says the natural spread of these LED's without optics is 120-140 degrees. http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c3...LEDsStrip1.jpg |
Layout 2 looks pretty good. The optics aren't required, 120 degree spread is probably what you'll get without which is probably perfect for supplemental. 60 degree is pretty tight so unless you line up your LEDs evenly over the tank and you have enough of them you'll notice more of a spotlight effect. 90 degree optics are ideal IMO but for supplemental, I wouldn't bother.
|
I definitly agree with the optics. I will go without them and see what happens. They did also have the option for 80 degree optics as well. But when they are mounted i'll see how it looks. The last thing I want is a spotlight effect.

Also got the egg crate done in the frag tank
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c3...a/IMG_6640.jpg Got a pic of the opposite side of the fish room. You can see the FOWLR, a temp water changing tank, the hospital/QT tank, and storage. http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c3...a/IMG_6645.jpg Unfortunately I had a crappy outbreak of ich last week (my fault for not quarantining a powder blue) and it has so far claimed a pajama cardinal, flame angel, and has my emperor angel not looking so hot in the QT. http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c3...a/IMG_6639.jpg http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c3...a/IMG_6638.jpg On the up side, I finally got some decent pics of the Niger Trigger: http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c3...a/IMG_6642.jpg http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c3...a/IMG_6641.jpg smiling for the camera http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c3...a/IMG_6648.jpg |
wow, you've been a busy beaver.....looking good Mike:biggrin:

But the big part of this build is coming hopefully this weekend. I have to rip down the wall between the closets, drywall, tape and mud the walls, then move the 155 Gallon sump into position. Then I can start to plumb everything together and build the stand that will house the fuges and frag tank above the sump. |
This is looking incredible, Mike! Neat to see my fish in their new home, and super-excited to see how the build is coming along. :)
Sorry about the ich outbreak, that stinks! |

I hear my Wife when I look at your build ... Fish, fish, fish .... Hope to see some more pics soon |

Thanks! Those Yellow Damsels of yours breed like rabbits! lol. Every time I look there is more eggs everywhere! I'll snap some pics tonight, they are all up the power cord on my Tunze powerhead. |
Some pics of the Snowflake eel
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c3...a/IMG_6573.jpg http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c3...a/IMG_6575.jpg http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c3...a/IMG_6576.jpg http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c3...a/IMG_6581.jpg This picture is hilarious.... in the bottom right corner you can see the eel attempting to bite the white fins of the late powder blue. Anything that looks like a big chunk of calamari he will get close to until he realizes that it isn't food. lol. http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c3...a/IMG_6572.jpg |
