Thanks Mike, I've always love powder blues, but they can be tricky. I was happy to get him from Bob knowing that he was healthy and doing well to begin with

 He does deal some pretty sweet shrooms  He also has been wonderful in helping my broke a$$ by hooking me up with salt, very grateful for this since I do a 60g water change per week.

GRRRRRRRRRR WTH!!!!!!!!

I just fed my tanks and I noticed that my orange spot blenny (same one in the pic. I took yesterday) wasn't out front and center gobbling up food like usual. I'm thinking to my self that that's strange and of course my first thought is "Oh sh*t he jumped" so I started to frantically search all around the tank and finally I see him in the tank (on the cheato and mangrove pod side) dead at the bottom  His body looked perfectly fine and in tact and he was eating well yesterday. At a total loss as to why he died, I had him for 4 months and while he spent most of that time in the reef tank, he had been in the 80g for about 2 weeks and did seem fine in there. I seriously don't get it  Also pretty sure that type of blenny gets a lot bigger (he was about 3" but i think they get to about 5") so I doubt it was from old age or anything like that :noidea:

es355lucille 04-04-2011 04:43 AM

Sorry to hear about your Blenn Laurie.

You have some great looking tanks! Love the mushrooms and the new fish you purchased. I don't think I have seen a chocolate mimic tang before...wow nice fish.

Thanks, ya it's not to often you see adult chocolate mimic tangs, juvi colours are more yellow. I always think of them as chocolate mimic tangs but they are also called Mimic Lemon Peel Tang (Acanthurus pyroferus).

I was talking to Doug and the only thing we could think of was that maybe the blenny somehow got stung by the fu man chu and that's what could of killed it. However I didn't see any marks on it's body and I would of thought a lionfish sting would leave a mark of some sort or some swelling or something :noidea:

Lance 04-04-2011 05:18 AM

Damn. Sad to hear this.

fishoholic 04-04-2011 05:23 AM

Thanks Lance, wish I knew what happened to him, really sucked finding my blenny dead all of a sudden.

Delphinus 04-04-2011 02:21 PM

Sorry to hear it. Blennies sure seem to be sometimes very iffy that way. I lost my ember blenny about 2 months ago (just before everyone got moved over into the new tank) in much the same way: everything fine, then one day at feeding he wasn't there. Found him floating near the back of the tank. Had had him for well over a year.

Couple other blennies I've tried have never made it past the first week (both ember blennies in those two cases). Just poof, one day, they're done, that's it.

Weird and disheartening...

Strange how that is  I was thinking I might get an ember blenny in the future, but now I'm leaning more towards a starry blenny. Might just do a good old bi-colour blenny, I had one yrs ago and he was the most personable blenny I ever had.

I recently couldn't find my bi-color and he'd been totally fine previously. Firecracker of personality I really miss him.

Duncans are non-photosynthetic, so they don't need much light. I target feed mine mysis and acan plus every once in awhile (which seems to help) and I do dump a lot of mysis in when I feed my fish so I'm sure it gets some mysis from the regular tank feedings.

Sorry about your blenny that sucks

whaa?? are you sure it isn't YOU that has Kien on your brain ??? I suppose there could be worse things to have on your brain. I'm not sure what those are though.

By the way, Duncans do contain zooxanthella and are capable of photosynthesis. :)

Hummmm.....and here I was tryin to sound smart because Doug told me they were non-photosynthetic and that they didn't need light, usually when it comes to corals I just take Doug's word for it

fishoholic 04-05-2011 09:16 PM

Found some info about ducan's and thought I'd share the link

http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/p...70&pcatid=2670

This info stood out to me:

"In the home aquarium, place in low current areas with low to moderate light."

"Though they feed through photosynthesis via the symbiotic algae zooxanthellae that thrive on the colony, this coral also benefits from regular target feedings of meaty marine foods such as enriched mysis and brine shrimp."

Leah 04-05-2011 09:49 PM

I have a Duncan in my tank and it has learned to open at night instead of in the day as my Angel kept nipping it.

Delphinus 04-05-2011 10:05 PM

I thought Duncans are "facultative" which is a fancy way of saying they swing both ways.

It is always good to keep your options open.

Lance 04-05-2011 11:02 PM

I've found Duncans to be very forgiving corals. If you don't feed them they will grow slowly. Feed them often and they explode in growth. They prefer low to moderate light and slower flow.
