What is the par on the LED's and is there sustainable sps tank growth and color data?
|
We dont have any data on the Par from Reef Brite - for that matter try and find data on the PAR from any manufacturer for just about any light, its just not available.
We do have a spectral plot of each light in the Reef Brite pamphlets though. As for keeping SPS, there are several people trying exclusively Reef Brites for this so time will tell. We have a frag tank here that is 12" wide, 6" tall, and 48" long and are running a single Reef Brite Blue LED strip on it for about a month now. The LPS look just amazing! The acans in this tank are just an insane color and we have some of the orange torch that looks like it should melt through the tank because its radio active or something. There are a few SPS in this tank and the results are varying. The Aussie fire engine monti (green base wire red polyps) is growing very quickly and in the last month has encrusted over 1/2". We have a crazy superman monti in the tank with an awsome blue base and a metallic red poly which is doing ok, but not amazing. And we have one of the indo superman monti with the blue base but the rusty red polyps and this piece isnt doing as well. The base is decent in color but one of the pieces is starting to lighten up in color and not extending polyps very often. But lets also not forget that this tank is running EXCLUSIVELY the Reef Brite Blue LED's. Adding a 50/50 or a daylight might change the results entirely but at the moment we are testing out the coloration that you can achieve under just the blue LED's. |
Currently i am running ATI Sunpower 6X54 on my tank right now. I want to swap out the light as its overkill for what i am keeping. Mainly just fish, Zoos, and the odd LPS.
I was thinking getting either the following: 2 50/50 48" 1 Blue 48" or 1 Blue 48" 1 white 48" 1 50/50 48" What would be the better combo |
What size is your tank?
On the nano tank build that we posted on the forum here there wered 2 50/50 and 2 actinic fixtures and I really liked the coloration of this combo so tis is what I would advise. If you are going for just three fixtures then I would probably use the 2 x 50/50 1 x actinic, but it does really hinge on the depth of your tank. |
48L x 24W x 18.5H
I'm planning on 4 eventually but starting with 3 |
Ok, to start I would use:
2 50/50 48" 1 Blue 48" Then when you can add another strip down the road I would add another of the blue 48" LED fixtures. Are you going to mount these in a canopy, built your own brackets or use the reefbrite brackets? |
I plan to use the Reef brite bracket if i can find them.
|
The original models came with adjustable controller, and the new ones don't. I would like to purchase a few strips with with the adjustable controller, where can I find these in Canada?
|
Check out this Nano from a Local Reef Shop in Ottawa, Marinescape, which has been retro-fit with 1 x 12" ReefBrite Daylight and 1 x 12" ReefBrite Actinic! http://reefwholesale.com/gallery/mai...serialNumber=1 To mount the 2 Reef Brites they just removed the existing hardware and put the 2 fixtures in behind the biocube's protective acrylic shield. http://reefwholesale.com/gallery/mai...serialNumber=1 |
This tank was converted at the beginning of December 2010 and check out how well these corals have been doing under the LED's. Here is a macro shot of some nice Fiji Zoanthids in the tank: http://reefwholesale.com/gallery/mai...serialNumber=1 Some nice zoanthids from Vietnam: http://reefwholesale.com/gallery/mai...serialNumber=1 An Ultra Grade Aussie Acan: http://reefwholesale.com/gallery/mai...serialNumber=1 Now of course the first question that people ask when it comes to LED lighting and maintaining corals is "what about sps?" http://reefwholesale.com/gallery/mai...serialNumber=1 They even have 4-5 differnt SPS which are doing very well in this tank or the nice acan garden in the center of the tank. We will get some more pictures for your shortly as we follow the success of this tank. |

what kind of leds are on the blue only strips? are they 3w Royal Blue leds?
|
We are fully stocked in the following sizes:
8" White 8" 50/50 8" Actinic *these are perfect for Biocubes! Just take out the cf's and drop in a Reefbrite! 12" White 12" 50/50 12" Actinic 24" White 24" 50/50 24" Actinic 36" White 36" 50/50 36" Actinic 48" White 48" 50/50 48" Actinic |
So anyone been running these for a while now? I have a 48x22x17 tank am thinking of doing the LED swap or a LED T5HO combo.
Still unsure about LED's for daylight. |

I was happy with them until 1 string of LED's on the daylight strip failed 3 weeks out of warranty, retailer asked for coverage seeing as it was so close but the manufacturer said "tough luck". Because of this exceptionally poor customer service I would say pass on them. |

Personally for sps I still prefer a combo of either MH + LED or T5 + LED as opposed to LED only. For LPS we use exclusively Reef Brite LED's on our propogation tank. They have been running there for 2 years and they work amazing! Great growth and amazing coloration! |
PM Sent Slick Fork.
|
No this is my display tank. Sps, LPS, mushrooms and zoas. I am running 2x 250 hqi but find them too strong.
|
What lamp do you run for your halides?
And the reflector? For keeping sps, call me old school but IMO T5's and halides are still the way to go. Then supliment with LED's as the pop that you get from Reef Brite LED's is just out of this world and WAY better than any other LED that we have ever tried. Here are a couple tank shots from Hookup in Ottawa. He posts on RC and on our local forum, but not here so much so I will post them up. Here is a true super man montipora (not the indo variety) http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/n...toUpdate-2.jpg Here is the same piece when the Reef Brites are on: http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/n...extPhase-5.jpg I can post some more of Hookups pics up if you would like. He has a pretty insanely nice tank. He runs an 10 lamp ATI power module and these pics were taken with a single 48" regular Reef Brite added on, not even the XHO! We are planning on modding his existing fixture by removing the 2 lamps that are controlled by the one plug and mounting some Reef Brites in their place so as to maintain the super sleak look of the fixture.... Not sure if it will work but we will see. |
Thats what I may have to do then. Go with T5 for daylight with actinic suppliment.
I am running the phoenix 14 in Lumenbright pendants and galaxy ballasts. The bottom of the pendant is probably 5 or 6 inches from the water surface, 8-10 inches from the top of the corals. The bulbs is even higher. I was thinking of trying 20k but I dont need 250w over an 17" deep tank. |
I think your pendants are too close to the water surface.
I used to run the lumen bright pendants. When I had them on my display they were mounted around 12" off the water surface and on our shallow coral beds they were mounted 18"-24" above the water surface depending on the coral bed. I had to build a crazy tall canopy for my display to accomodate these reflectors and I ended up switching them out for T5 almost right away... Then shortly added the Reef Brites as suplimentation to the T5's. I was running the same lamps and reflector but on the coralvue dimmable ballsts and i did get some great growth and coloration with that combo. |
Thought I'd share an update and give credit where it's due. Especially since I shared a negative experience on this thread
After reading about my issue I got a PM from Pfoster at Reef Wholesale stating that he had never been approached by the retailer about this issue and offering to replace the defective unit. So, I sent him the broken one and got a brand new one in the mail. Gotta say that I'm really impressed with the customer service from Reef Wholesale. It changed a pretty negative experience to a positive one. Thanks |
