Well, first off I don't have a meter to say what my par is. My tank isn't the same size as yours so my issues could be completely different. I'm running a 400 watt XM 20K in a 22" squared luminarc reflector over my cube, which is 24x24x22". Some corals that are dead center, and 10" below the water surface are colorful and thriving. While others at the same hight and off to the side are brown but still have polyp extension.
What I've been thinking for the past while is that the reflector may have hot spots which may be burning some of the corals. Thus I have the light quite high over the tank, like 14-16" above the water. Now I'm second guessing my theory, and wondering if these "unhealthy" corals aren't getting enough light. By using your readings with a similar bulb and reflector as a base-line, how much higher do you think the par would be if you had a 400 watt bulb instead of the 250? In your opinion and based on the readings you posted on this thread, what is the optimum par reading for the corals you have. It might give me a better idea of where I stand with mine. Thanks, Danny |

first, if a mod is reading this, please move this thread to tank journal forum. Thank you in advance!
what are your phosphates and nitrates at? If I used a 400w, I assume the ratings would be higher, but the spread would be similar. That's where I think the 1 MH reflector was suffering in my setup. I was fine with the par readings, and if I put 2 mh's on the tank, it would be fine. quick param update, video to follow :) http://www.artwithlight.com/fishtank...213/param1.jpg http://www.artwithlight.com/fishtank...213/param2.jpg http://www.artwithlight.com/fishtank...213/param3.jpg ________ LIVE SEX |

Looks good!
What are you charting the params with? Interesting to see the day to day variances with the Mg in particular. I've never thought to test Mg day by day unless I was specifically adjusting it, otherwise I usually let it slide to about weekly. |

I'm charting my parameters on Reef Tools Live http://reeftools.com/live/profile.ph...ser_parameters

I run mine between 6 - 7 all the time and am getting great growth and colours on my sps.

Dez, I like to keep mine at around 9 - 9.6. I'll get it there, it's just about dialing in. There is NOTHING out there that says keeping it at 7 is any worse/better, so I'm not sure why I picked my number :)

How are you controlling the reactor? In particular, how are you controlling the pH of the reactor, and how are you controlling the flow rate? Those are obviously key as you try to dial in the reactor.
Also...you should measure the alk output of the reactor as a measure of the effectiveness of your adjustments. (use 1/2 normal sample size and double your result because you could be looking at Alk as high as 30dkh.) Don't assume that higher flow rate means more Alk/Ca contribution. Lower pH most often increases output, but there is a limit to how low you can go before the media just turns to mush and plugs up the reactor. Alk measurement x flow rate = reactor output. |
