geting 30-40 LBS of live rock this week, very very excited, hoping for some hitchhikers maybe a crab? :D also proboly going to get a test kit

Chase31 02-01-2010 03:09 AM

also looking for ideas for CUC not sure what i would need in a 31G thinking a few cleaner shrimp, thats all i have in my head right now...

Jessie55 02-01-2010 06:01 AM

Variety of snails Turbo, Cerith, Stomatella list goes on. I don't think the cleaner shrimp will clean enough especially when the diatoms go crazy and the shrimp will not be able to clean the glass. Hermits are good for sand but they can be a pain when they start climbing on your corals however they are awesome during the diatom stage imo.

Chase31 02-01-2010 01:15 PM

well im sure the hermits are not that hard to catch, not to worryed about the glass but i want my sand to be clean

Chase31 02-04-2010 05:27 AM

Well got my rock, thanks to dez and his hospitality, Great tank! looks amazing.

Well heres the aqua scape, probably not final but think it looks good so far!
(sorry about the salt creep)

Chase31 02-04-2010 05:33 PM

Well guess my rock work wasn't that good :p, decided that the peice on the left of the tank the really cool one like a dead coral will be epoxied to the rocks directly behind it because that side of the tank it boring.

The skimmer is skimming pretty well (i think)
(was supposed to get a difff skimmer last night but my truck broke down and couldnt afford it)
the skim mate is still darker fairly wet but its only one night and not that bad i dont think

Chase31 02-04-2010 07:27 PM

got my water tested and the ammonia was through the roof! nitrates and nitrites were fairly low and the ph was right on the money

Chase31 02-05-2010 09:25 PM

well the skimmers skimming and the rock is cycling and the mini brittle star i found is.. moving?

lorenz0 02-05-2010 09:44 PM

my advice is to wait till march 1st. Take your time, but the only things i would consider adding before than is some hermits and snails. patience is key

Chase31 02-05-2010 10:09 PM

well i'll be getting the water tested pretty often to how the levels are and the CUC will probably go in the 17th earlyest and first fish and soft corals on the first

Chase31 02-15-2010 12:23 AM

well went and got a nutrafin testkit for ammonia nitrate and nitrite levels are as follows
(color matching so not sure)
Ammonia=0-0.1
nitrate= 0-5
nitrite= 0.1-0.3
PH=7.9-8.1

ideas on were my cycle is?

Chase31 02-15-2010 01:26 AM

CuC tommrow... anyone going to stop me?... any ideas on what i should get for my CUC? do i have to feed them?

Kryptic4L 02-15-2010 01:29 AM

dont even look like you have had a cycle yet, from what I can see, I would try and say no dont do it, but people are usually set on doing it they just look for the yes and if it does not come they do it anyways.

Chase31 02-15-2010 01:33 AM

lol you pretty much have that right, but the ammonia was insanely high if you look a couple of posts back, and i think the ammonia might be 0 but its hard to do the color match :p

Kryptic4L 02-15-2010 03:08 AM

through the roof with no actual reading, usually implies was not tested. as mentioned you just picked up test kits recently.

You have no mention of nitrate's showing up. As usually through the roof mean's changing out a bunch of water to get rid of them after the cycle. Only speculation from my experiance. Again enjoy your crew.

Chase31 02-15-2010 03:25 AM

well i took it in to get it tested at the LFS and it was the highest or higher on the chart, and the nitrates were in a decent range i didn't recall the exact amounts cuz in my head i dont really think it matters lol it was actually tested

ALBERTA REEF 02-15-2010 03:59 AM

PIC'S PICS PIC'S PIC'S COME ON WE WANT PIC'S (does this sound like some)

Chase31 02-15-2010 04:41 AM

well ill give you pics if you give me some ideas on my CUC

The Grizz 02-15-2010 04:49 AM

Snails, hermit crabs, cleaner shrimp, magnetic glass cleaner, long arms & time, lol.

Not sure what one need's for CUC as I only really have about 6 - 8 hermits & about the same for snails that i can see. I do want to get some shrimp once the new tank is up.

The Grizz 02-15-2010 04:55 AM

If you go by J&L CUC packages this is what they suggest for 30 - 45 gal.

30 - Blue Legged Hermits
5 - Red Scarlet Hermit
10 - Astrea Snails
10 - Margarita Snails
10 - Cerith Snails

Chase31 02-15-2010 04:55 AM

okay will look at some hermits and snails tommrow and i have the long arms so i think im good, will be sure to post some pics tommrow for you :)

Chase31 02-15-2010 04:56 AM

30 - Blue Legged Hermits

think that might be a lil overkill :p i would have to feed the cuc witch i proboly will have to for a bit anyways

ALBERTA REEF 02-15-2010 05:06 AM

I had bought the 70-90g Package from J&A it was over kill. I split it between the two 90gallons. Suggest 15-25gallon package. Blue legged hermit crabs are the small ones. Blue knuck hermit crabs are the big ones. I you what one of these I suggest one.

The Grizz 02-15-2010 05:12 AM

I would agree with Cory that J&L CUC are major over kill, IMO. I would start with 4-5 BL Hermit, 4-5 Cerith snails, turbo's and maybe a shrimp or 2.:noidea:

Ian 02-15-2010 05:18 AM

agree with Griz..but be careful with hermits they tend to become a major PITA later on so go lite on them.

Chase31 02-15-2010 05:20 AM

well im going to aquarium illusions tommrow so hopefully ill be able to use there expertise and my not so much to get a small one going

The Grizz 02-15-2010 05:25 AM

Look for some really small Blue Knuckle hermits not the bigger BL Hermit I said earlier.

I agree with Greg on 4-5 bl hermit crabs. Skip Cerith snails eazy pray for hermit crabs. Suggest 3 Turbo sails (1/10gallons) not the Mexican ones they get to big and knocks ever thing over. Sand sifting starfish, 1 cleaner shrimp.

Chase31 02-15-2010 11:50 PM

okay well went and got my CUC (dad bought a cleaner shrimp cuz he thought it was cool) so the list
1 Cleaner shrimp (speedy)
3 hermit crabs
2 empty hermit shells
3 snails (one large one and 2 small ones)
1 brittle star

PICS ARE COMING
cant get camera to work :p

Chase31 02-16-2010 01:52 AM

love the one hermit's shell.

never seen those test kits before anywhere i shop. are they strip's ? just wondering as i dont recall seeing a set amount of test's labelled before.

Chase31 02-16-2010 01:25 PM

no there the hagen tubes that you add set ammount of drops then match the color

Crytone 02-16-2010 02:37 PM

Looks like a great start!
Did you get 3 left-handed hermits (like the one shown)? I have 3 of them also and find them interesting but not really the best cleaners. I love the Skunk Cleaner Shrimp also! So nice looking. And I hear ya on the acclimating. I acclimate for at least an hour usually and it's torturous but better than dead livestock!
