Hey quick question... if I build my tank in the custom with a budget category, do I have to include the cost of the building materials? Or are they counted as freebies being building materials, at least for the main display tank (similar to the stock 10 gallon category, where the display 10g is free but a sump would be extra)?

I'm just formulating a plan and figured out that it might be easiest to build my own tank, but I won't do this if it will figure into my budget. It's looking like my need for a protein skimmer is going to be... well, expensive unless I do a DIY one.

On a side note, if I were to buy a skimmer from someone on Canreef, I would put what I paid against my budget, right?

Rbacchiega 05-08-2009 01:50 PM

building materials are not part of budget, even if you build it yourself. For the skimmer you would pay the price before shipping (if any).

at least that's how I understood the rules

How do we budget the frags from our own tanks? Sorry, I thought I read that somewhere but I can't find it now.

christyf5 05-09-2009 04:02 PM

Market cost.

I had a great idea, it got shot down. So we go with this.

Ron99 05-09-2009 05:17 PM

Okay. So if I had a large zoa frag that I bought for say $15 at the Reef Network frag auction and split it in half do I budget it as $15 or as $7.50? If I had a large finger leather I bought for $40 and split it into 4 frags is it $10 or do I have to use the entire $40? I guess I am trying to get a handle on how to account for frags of frags etc :)

Sorry, not trying to be difficult. I am trying to put together a preliminary budget as my hardware costs will probably be around $200 and want to make sure my accounting is correct.

LOL, huge interest in this but not a lot of entrants. It starts tomorrow people!!

OK lets go people, was fun watching the last contest. If there is 25 registered entrants by June 14 (late entry deadline, correct?) I will personally donate 1 much anticipated Vortech MP10 to the prize pool (slated for Sept release) should make for some exciting entries and a great early christmas present for the lucky winner.

*not so legal disclaimer- if I am unable to secure an MP10 for some reason I reserve the right to substitute with item of equal value. This offer only applies if there is a total of 25 confirmed registered entrants.

BlueAbyss 05-31-2009 06:10 PM

You, sir, are awesome

JDigital 05-31-2009 06:15 PM

If only a 30G were legal......

i wanted to join the first nano contest and when this one came around i was so excited, threw it by my wife, no go, dont have enough cash for 2 tanks at the moment, i had 2 really good ideas for them also, and now this mp10 man i would love to join, to bad tanks are so expensive to start up from scratch.
