I have no problems cooperating with the cities finest, if they asked to come in and allowed us to get dressed first it would be fine but if they just barged in before even asking to come in I probably would have put up some kind of fight. Arresting me would make it worse on them. Not much different from some complete stranger coming in unannounced searching your place and invading your privacy. Police or not they still have to follow the law and should set the example for everyone.
The problem with your situation was according to your records you invited them in so it's your word against theirs which gets you no where. If the situation was escalated it would be obvious something went down. Anyways sorry you had to go through that, it's a shame you have to worry about more than just buglers these days. |
Sorry to hear about this Randi. Guess we never know. Sheez.
|
I think what upsets me most now is that the police seem to have given up...
|
Very sorry to hear about the break in. We're also on an acerage just outside of Edmonton. It is an invasion and the feelings you're left with take years to go away. I still look at the windows of the house when I drive in. Don't want to be a downer, but I think you'll have to do something for extra security now as the thieves know that within a few months you will have to replace everything they took.
When I started reading this thread I was really looking forward to seeing some pics of the tanks and pond. I'll be looking forward to seeing them when things settle down for you. |
This is Canada you are not allowed to have a loaded firearm in your house for self defence. That is not allowed. If I were you I'd edit that post and go get something useful for self defence like a 12 gauge.
|
edited the post in question, but I think that's garbage.
|
Me too but unfortunatley our limp wristed rulers feel that it is best for it's serfs to be unarmed.
It is actually illegal for you to be in possession of that firearm unless you have a license. The only way you may be in control of it is if you have a license or are under direct supervision of someone with a license. If you have one good for you, if not go take the course and get the license, it's a PITA but it'll keep you out of jail. Welcome to Canada, it doesn't have to make sense it is just the law. |
fortunately for myself I do have a license...so I'm good there. Maybe if someone tries to break in while I'm home I should offer them a coffee. The .22 is mainly for if coyotes come on the property and try to get at the dog or ducks ... but it helps me sleep at night knowing I can at least scare them off if I need to
|
Sweet thing on the license. The firearm is in use for predator control. That is all perfectly legal. Good luck on the yodle dogs.
I hope all goes well with the insurance co. The cops are just going to file it away unfortunatley. |
too bad we dont have really on the ball cops.
for all its worth Randi, if i could i'd totaly parkour/wrestle/taekwondo their asses if i could. no one messes with Calgary reefers |

I love Canada (born here to American parents) but some of the laws really do make little sense. I think this is one of them although I do understand the reasoning behind it. Its kind of a tough one. |
Man, at least in Calgary you don't have cops killing immigrants and beating up minorities without reprimand..
I've been robbed twice, both in new west, I only called the police the first time. It was so apparent the first time that the officer didn't give a flying *&%$, like it was such a chore, she didn't even realize that the door had been kicked in, she came in, had one look around and said they must have come in the patio while it was very obvious from the splintered wood all over the floor in the front hallway that they had forcibly kicked in the door that I almost felt more was stolen by the police than the robbers. Never looked at the police the same after that, never will. |
on a side note, which is actually the main note, I really can't wait to see pics of your sharks/gars...
Hope you get back on track soon. |
I've got to get another camera, but as soon as I do I'll be sure to post.
|
I'm far more interested in the pics than gun laws too!!!
What are you going to get for a camera? |
I've had my eye on a couple.... Either a Nikon d40 or the Canon equivalent I think. We'll have to see. I've always just had a point and shoot...but I really like the way the pictures look from either of these cameras.
|
JDigital has one for sale. Not sure of the model but he said it does hd video too.
|
Yeah, took a look at the model he is selling online and it's not what I'm looking for...nice camera, but not what I want
|
buy a quickie disposalable put some pics on cd and at least give us something ...sheesh :)
|
I scrolled through my photobucket account to see if I had any pics of the build etc in there...I don't. But I did find two of the sharks when they were in the tank before I built them a pool...
The smoothhound: http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m...023/shark4.jpg One of my fat little coral banded: http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m...023/shark3.jpg this should buy me SOME time LOL |
Mmmm, purdy. I've always wanted to do some kind of shark pond.. <sigh>
|
That 280 could house a coral banded....just throwing it out there. LOL I've seen coral bandeds kept in reef style setups
*thinks*...How big is your garage? LOL |
A shark in a reef would be pretty darn cool. I definitely think a massive pool is the proper way to go tho.
Reef in pool would kill 2 birds...but that means the half of my garage filled with garbage would need to be cleaned out! |
we were talking about this actually over at Greg's yesterday. I've been considering getting some lower light corals and trying them in the pool. But they'd have to be ones that look good top down...I don't know if I ever will do this, but it's a thought I've been tossing around for a while
|
My dream "tank" would actually be a pond that is 1/4 reef with a drop off and the rest sand for sharks and rays. I think it would make a wicked display and perfect for top down viewing if you stocked the reef with sps. My idea would be to do mostly caps and tabling acros. You could just light the reef area heavily and leave the rest a bit more dim.
|
well if you ever start that dream tank I"ll gladly make the trip out there to help you set it up.

Boo on the break in. I've been broken into once, our car, and they ended up just cleaning it out. They tried, but failed to steal it, 'cause they couldn't drive stick. They did pop the clutch though and move the car forwards by about a foot. They came by our apartment the next morning, and were a little surprised to not only find the locks changed, but someone home. Campus police were 100% more helpful then the city police. The city police almost wouldn't let us put in a statement until I asked for his name and number. Definitely a crappy time. I couldn't imagine it being my house though...
Dexter looks like a classy guy, I like it! There is nothing wrong with being a loveable and sweet dog. I picked up the Nikon D40x shortly after it came out. I debated for a long while about D40 vs D40x and eventually decided on the x, only because it was mislabeled and priced as the 40. You might want to look into the D70, I believe its the same as the 40/40x, however it has video capabilities. |
Issue with the d40 tho is it has no drive pin to enable auto-focus on any lenses without motors inside them. My father-inlaw had the d40 and was stoked to take some awesome pics with a cheap but awesome lens: 50mm 1.8. It however was not capable of using the lens with AF.
The d80 should be much cheaper now that the d90 is out. It's a great camera and what I currently use. |
I think I'll more than likely go with the d40. I really liked doing manual focusing etc with old 35mm cameras in school and I like the idea that now you can acchieve some of the same effects with digital
Decisions decisions! |
decide already...take a demo model home for a tryout, take some picture..post them...then be picky :)
I've always been told by my photography friends who are into nikon and canon, if you are starting out and have no "glass" already then checkout a pentax. I have one...a k10...i like it, photo skills suck, but the camera is nice :) |
This is Randi's brother Tyler posting for her. She called me to see if I had any pictures of her shark pond. I have loaded them onto her photobucket account and will post them here. Don't mind the date, my camera that I was using was busted and I couldn't change the date setting. these were taken about a year ago.
http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m...k20pond203.jpg http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m...ark20pond2.jpg http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m...filtration.jpg I know that she's changed the skimmer I think it's called (I don't do fish) and dug a whole bunch around there etc. so things might have changed... |
geez randi now im even more sour, i thought the shark pond was fw for some reason, want a free grouper:) perfect size for a shark pond. id probably give away all the big fish to a good home but i just love the snapper and would hate to not have him around
|
Well now that's a start! Looks pretty cool! Thanks for uploading!

Thats awesome! That is what I should have done with the 2000 gallon pond I built in my basement. Way cooler than koi and catfish.

Looks cool Randi and thanks bro for posting. |
Cool!
I think when I love to Singapore I am going to convert my fathers 4000G Koi pond into a shark pond one night while he is sleeping :D ...What a waste of 4000G...Koi :( Only problem is that its outside and I think would get way too hot for the sharks. Post more pics!!!! |
haha the koi are worse they bite, my dads got a big koi pond to (7500 gallons) and id go in and change the filters and such and theyd nip at me the whole time
