total of 400 gal
pumps add up to 18950gph
= aprox 47.375

Myka 05-18-2009 11:34 PM

33g LPS only. No sump.

Koralia 2 (600 gph)
MJ1200 (300 gph)

A couple small pumps running hob filter for carbon and PhosBan reactor which according to manufacturer's ratings adds another 300 gph to my tank, but I won't add them in because their flow is very indirect.

900 gph total = 27x turnover.

It's kinda tough to compare turnover and flow because the pumps are rated so differently especially when you compare impeller driven to propeller driven. So it's good everyone is listing the brand and model names. :) My MJ1200 puts out more "flow" than the Koralia 2 even though the Koralia is rated as having double the output of the MJ.

It would be tough to get two MJ1200s in my tank and not have my LPS freak out, which would only be 600 gph total going by manufacturer's rating and only 18x turnover. If I had two Koralia 2s I wouldn't get enough flow, and that would be 1200 gph total or 36x turnover.

Aleks 05-19-2009 12:44 AM

Wow, I'm apparently inadequate in flow compared to you guys........
15gal breeder style
~700gph flow

47x turnover on 15 full gallons......I have 17lbs rock and 30lbs deep sand bed so probably closer to 12gal water volume, which is 58x turnover.....

Nothing wrong with that if you are keeping SPS... probably a bit much for LPS/softies though... (58x)

I wouldn't have found this thread if it hadn't been revived... it's been very informative! I'm aiming for an intermittent random flow in my nano, so this thread has been invaluable. Thanks to everyone who put in their 0.02!

My post needs editing big time:biggrin:

pterfloth 05-19-2009 03:32 AM

200 gal SPS

2xTunze 6100 = 6800 gph
2xK4 = 2400 gph
1000 gph return

10,200/200 = 51x turnover per hr

Will be adding wavebox

lobsterboy 05-19-2009 03:38 AM

ok, so here;s my updated info

125gallon SPS

last post was: 5900gph, turn over was 47 times per hour

present post: 8123gph, turn over is 65 times per hour

Zoaelite 05-19-2009 03:43 AM

Well then

Main Tank (65G)-
2 K4's 1200 GPH each
Ocean Runner 6500- 900 GPH (Calc. @ 700 GPH for head height)
Turn Over= 47X

Frag/ Zoa Tank (60G)
2 K4's 1200 GPH each
Return from main tank 700GPH
Return from fuge 500 GPh (Calc. @ 400 GPh for head height)
Turn Over= 58X

Fuge (27G)
Ocean runner 2000 500 GPh (Calc. @ 400 for head height)
K1- 400 GPH
Turn Over= 33X

Total- 152G, total turn over 7600GPH
Total Turn over Per hour- 50X
Levi

Oxymoron 05-19-2009 03:59 AM

90 gal future sps,
2x Tunze Turbelle 6125 @ 3170 gph ea
600 gph return
= 6940 gph / 77.11 turnover/hr

SeaHorse_Fanatic 05-19-2009 04:01 AM

2 x 2200 Maxijet Mods - 4400gph
Hydor Koralia4 - 1200gph
Hydor Koralia3 - 850gph
Tunze Nanostream 6045 - 1185gph
Sedra9000 - (after head loss) - 500gph

That's 8135 gph on a 210g mixed reef or about 39 times flow.

Anthony

Lance 05-19-2009 04:38 AM

225gal mixed reef:

Reeflo Barracuda (after head loss) = 2500gph
2x MaxiJet 1200's with upgrade = 4200
Korallia 4 = 1200
-----
7900 = aprox 35x turnover

90gal mixed reef:

Eheim 1262 (after head loss) = 500gph
2x Korallia 4 = 2400
-------
2900 = aprox 32x turnover

Decided to look it up for "official" flow rates of my stuff after your post......

K1 - 400gph
F204- 180gph

580gph/15 = 39x turnover
580gph/12 = 48x turnover

Somehow I thought the K1 was 480gph, and the F204 was 200gph? Anywho, more realistic numbers here now. My Fluval runs empty minus carbon so I'm sure its a little higher than 180 running empty, but who knows...

Pazil 06-06-2009 02:50 AM

I am now at appox. 9500 gph plus the wavebox (not sure how to figure out that water movement).... Running 2 tunze 6105's @ 3434gph each and a dart return at approx 2600 gph. So I guess somewhere around 63 X turnover.

kien 10-26-2009 09:56 PM

Cool. Was curious about other peoples flows and found this thread.

150g
2x tunze 6105 (3434 gph each at full blast)
1x Mag18 return (1300gph; accounting for head loss)
--------
total: 8168 gph ( / 150g ) = ~54x

at night I like to throttle the tunze down to 50% to give the fish a more peaceful rest.

Oceanic 10-27-2009 02:23 AM

Two Tunze streams
1 Maxi Mod w Maxijet 1200
1 MP40W Vortech
1 Tunze Wavebox
1 Mag 9 return pump

11,626 GPH Flow rate

77.51 times per hour turnover

globaldesigns 10-27-2009 02:45 AM

My DT is 180 gallons with majority of coral being SPS, running the following:

4X Koralia #2's = 600gph each = 2400 gph
1X Vortech MP40W = 3000 gph
2X Returns from AquaMedic Oceanrunner 6500 = 1700 gph total

Total GPH = 7100gph

Total turnover at 39.5X per hour.

JDigital 12-11-2009 05:43 AM

Never did post up for my 30G cube..

MP20 = 2000GPH
Return = 500GPH

2500 / 30G = 83x TO...

Got my 105G coming this week though and this is my plan for that:

MP20 x 2 = 4000gph
Koralia 3 = 850gph
Tunze 6045 = 1200gph
Return = 500gph

6550 / 93.5G (act. water volume in DT) = 70x TO

If the sand stays put with that setup, I might add a 2nd K3 or 6045...

wow soo much turn over for ur 30 gallon doesnt ur water just go crazy?

JDigital 12-11-2009 06:13 AM

^^ Not really.. water stays in the tank, that's all that matters to me.. That's on a braceless/trimless tank as well. Its also 98% SPS too... thought about adding another K1 or K2, but no point now that my new tank is coming.

manaf 12-11-2009 06:14 AM

oo okay thats good to hear what would be too much flow?

When the sand starts to lift into the water column... or the tips of my SPS start to burn.

shrimpchips 12-11-2009 06:25 AM

I'll play!

20g DT
150 gph return (Eheim 1250)
500 - 2000 gph Vortech MP-20
650 - 2150 gph = 33 ~ 108x Turnover

lobsterboy 12-11-2009 06:57 AM

i added a sieo pump rated at 1000 gph.

so its something like 11,950 gph now.

Whats Your Flow 2011??

Lobsterboy started this back in 2009......and I find the data very interesting to see the turnover rate in all of your displays. So lets update our data in this link and keep it going. I see that many people in the past that input data have increased the amount of flow in their displays....it will be interesting to see what they look like now.

1. Please give your type of tank: Mixed Reef / SPS / Softies
2. Tank Volume (display only)
3. Pumps and GPH rating
4. Turnover rate (GPH Grand Total / divided by display volume)

Mixed Reef - Sofies and SPS
140 Gallon Display
2 x MP40 Vortech - 6400 gph
Tunze 6055 - 1500 gph
Koralia 3 - 850 gph
Mag 18 return Pump - 900 gph

Total 9650 / 140 = 68.9 X Turnover

lobsterboy 03-13-2011 07:20 AM

nice blast from the past

I am running a whomping 0 times per hour right now

es355lucille 03-13-2011 07:28 AM

I just want to requote this and when you are back in the game you make sure to add in your flow!! LOL! Nice to hear from you again John. Hope things are well with you! Brad:mrgreen:

1. Please give your type of tank: Mixed Reef
2. Tank Volume 120gal
3. Pumps and GPH rating: Mag 12 (1200gph) and Reeflo Dart (3600gph)
4. Turnover rate: 29x/hr according to the head loss calculator on RC

1. Please give your type of tank: frag trough
2. Tank Volume: 100gal
3. Pumps and GPH rating: Reeflo Dart (3600gph), Mag 3 (300gph), Koralia 4 x2 (1400gph), Koralia 1 x2 (400gph), Iwaki 70 (1500gph @4')
4. Turnover rate... ~60x/hr? after head loss

1. Tank will be SPS dominated. May be somewhat of a mixed reef.
2. 300g
3. 2xTunze 6205, 2xVorTech MP60, 1xTunze Wavebox, 2xEheim 1262 (returns)
4. With all of the pumps running at Maximum flow, the turnover is over 100X

Average turnover is probably somewhere around 60X

It's always interesting to see what other reefers do
here's what i run on my home tank
1) mostly sps tank
2) tank volume is around 440 ish
3.1) reeflo sapper for return(1800 ish after head lost)
3.2) reeflo hammer head for close loop(5900 gph)
3.3) 6 mp40w (19200 gph)
3.4) 8 tunze 6055(11624 gph)
3.5) 2 tunze wave boxes(i think it's around 6400 gph)
4) at max flow about 102x hour

i would think average is around 70x hour:biggrin:

Oh sure - your flow has to be 2 more than mine.

Having seen your tank, whatever you are doing seems to be working. Maybe I should add another powerhead to get my flow up to 102X?

i am waiting to see how the mp60 works for you first lol, i may end up pulling all of my tunzes out and run 4 mp60's with my other mp40's. Just not sure yet, lot of money to do that change:cry:
