This thread is a thing of beauty!

How about Thailand/Malaysia/Singapore areas?

I love the food out that way, the beaches are great... not sure about diving as I don't do that (the jaws music plays in my head whenever I get under water too long)...

PoonTang 08-19-2009 03:03 AM

Cozumel. If you dont want to go to mexico then try Cuba, Grand Cayman, Honduras. South pacific try Tahiti. Or the ultimate... Australia's great barrier reef.

Lance 08-19-2009 03:26 AM

We've talked about the Far East or Australia before, but Joan doesn't fly well and doesn't think she could handle a real long flight. (pour enough alcohol in her and I'm sure she'd be fine ) She's thinking more along the lines of the Carribean or South America.

I've heard lots of good things about Cuba holiday-wise, but how is the snorkeling/diving?

Mrfish55 08-19-2009 03:50 AM

LOL I started to laugh when you mentioned the compressor, somehow I knew what was comming, better stay away from her at work for awhile I don't think I could keep a straight face, my wife would kill me over something like that.

EDIT: OMFG I posted before reading the whole thread I thought this just happened, didn't look at the original post date and realize this is the second infraction, enjoy that vacation you are going to take her on! I still think I should stay away from the store for awhile :) I should bring Lynn over so you can show me how the cleaning with compressed air works, I could use a real good laugh just before I die!

Never personally been there but the south shore there is a huge reef sanctuary. Mabey someone else can chime in here? The internet and a good travel agent or a dive club would all be good sources of info.

Nope, 2nd time. I'm that stupid...............or she is

sitandwatch 08-19-2009 04:39 AM

Cozumel have great diving and snorkeling.

So if there is ever a third time I think you need to plant a camera in advance.

hope the couch is comfy.

Thanks Darren.
Can anybody who's been tell me more about this south shore reef.

I have to say I was wondering why on earth this was bumped up, but man 2 times :surprise: You're lucky to be alive!

Yes definitely next year she holds the compressor and you hold the line, then when you get sprayed Joan can take your picture and post it on here

I would think a week long all inclusive (somewhere warm) trip is definitely in order for you to be able to get back into her good books once more. Still can't imagine (especially after last time) how on earth you convinced her to hold the line :tsk:

Navarchus 08-20-2009 03:02 AM

Reading the first two lines was enough for me to see where things age going to…
And so should you!!! The writing was on the wall…….you should have prepared the camera from advanced!!!
:)

Lance 09-01-2009 12:22 AM

So this is what it cost me: She booked the tickets today. Anybody stayed here?

Looks pretty nice. Maybe spraying return line goop all over her was not such a bad idea.

That looks nice, when are we leaving?

End of January, and you can't go 'cuz you're on emergency call for my tanks!

Delphinus 09-01-2009 02:58 AM

My wife & I stayed at Barcelo Maya in 2000 shortly after they opened. FABULOUS place, awesome snorkeling right off the beach. Hopefully the reefs haven't been destroyed in the 9 years hence. It's close to Xcaret and Xelha and Tulum and Chichen Itza and .. um .. some big sinkhole (cenote) whose name I can't remember but was awesome. Check into doing all these things!

Sounds terrific! Thanks Tony. Did you dive the cenote?

argan 09-01-2009 03:52 AM

Epic tank cleaning fail

my2rotties 09-01-2009 04:03 AM

Did she look like Bill Murry on Ghostbusters when he got slimed?

It could have been worse... it could have been skimmer goo.

No, not quite that bad. Just a thousand or so, greenish-brown splats all over her.

I don't even want to think what it would cost me if it was skimmer goo. :puppydog:

Swam in it for sure, can't remember if we took snorkel gear or not. It is insanely deep. I didn't think it would bother me but it's a bizarre sensation looking down and realizing it may as well be a bottomless pit. I was like .. I could totally see myself dropping my car keys down there (good thing I didn't have any).

Yeah, I can see that being kind of creepy. Maybe I'll just stick to the reef and leave the cenotes to the experts.

Delphinus 09-01-2009 05:15 PM

No no no, do check it out if you can. It's really quite spectacular. That whole peninsula is former reef limestone ..it's like a big giant porous piece of dried out live rock (with grass and trees and stuff growing on top). Anywhere you see a puddle, that puddle is probably connected underground to every other puddle, and probably the ocean. I remember seeing a pond, or what I thought was a pond, on the resort grounds, only a couple feet in diameter in size (ie., tiny) and then noticed that it was at least 6 or 7 feet deep, and had reef fish swimming in it. They got there themselves through some underground maze.

I think the cenote is usually done in conjunction with another day trip. I can't remember if it was Tulum or Chichen Itza. Although neither are rather reefy, they reek of history and you can really feel a buzz (well, if you're into history and old things and stuff). You HAVE to check these out in my opinion, you won't regret it.

The one and only complaint I had about Barcelo Maya is that there was a 1/2 hour limit per day with the catamarans. Being that I pretend to be a sailor in my other hobby, this was sort of disappointing to me because 1/2 hour of crashing about in those waves was over in a blink of an eye. They also had kayaks and windsurfers though with unlimited usage, but windsurfing for me was impossible in those waves, I'm not a strong windsurfer so it was an exercise in futility. I'd just get upright and then knocked off balance instantly. :(

Maybe they have more than 2 beach cats now. For the size of resort, having only 2 and rationing them out like that was rather silly.

Sounds pretty interesting. We'll check out the cenotes. And we'll definitely go see the Mayan ruins. (I love that kind of stuff). As for the sailing, I've never done any other than as a passenger on a larger boat. Will definitely try out the windsurfing and kayaks though. Thanks for the heads-up Tony. I'm sure we'll have a great time!

Lance 01-07-2010 12:01 AM

Only 3 weeks to Lance's Make-Up Vacation!
(14 nights at the Barcelo Maya Tropical Beach Resort)

Her agenda includes: (she informs me)
- exploring the Mayan ruins which includes a Mayan zip-line ride
- kayaking
- jet skis
- aquatic bikes (whatever those are?)
- windsurfing
- deep sea fishing
- snorkling & diving
- beach volleyball
- pitch & putt
- latin dancing.........(might have to fake a belly ache that night):puke:

I'm seeing a pattern here and I think I've figured out her crafty plan:
Keep me so busy that there's no time for the three B's................Beach, Bikinis, and Booze!

In which order do those normally happen for you Lance? Few too many drinks, slip into something a little stringy and then pass out in the sand?

Your place looks like a palace compared to the Akumal Beach Resort where we've stayed on two occasions. Xcaret and Xelha were definitely worth checking out...I couldn't convince my wife to do the cenotes but they sounds incredible. Snorkeling right in front of our resort was awesome. Turtles, massive schools of blue tangs, tarpons and rays.

You know you sure are lucky to have ****ed her off this badly...except for the dancing.

The first time we went to the Mayan we did Xel-Ha and the Tulum ruins tour (half day each). Wished we would have just gone on your own. You can take the colectivo (Van-Bus) from the Main Road. Its cheap cheap. Buck or so for a spot in a van with 10+ other tourists/locals and (a chicken or two if you are lucky ) Believe they run every 15 minutes back and forth between Cancun and Tulum. You also aren't tied down if you want to spend more time or less time at a certain place.

Colectivo

Sounds like you will be hitting the Tulum ruins. There is a nice cove at the bottom of the cliffs. Take some towels so you can go for a dip.

Also take some banana with you from breakfast and go snorkel with the fishes just off the beach of your resort. Its awesome having them eat out of your hand. Just don't be douche and leave the peel floating in the ocean.
