Hahah! Small world!

Nice shots Cougarman, nice to see some new shots.

hillbillyreefer 07-30-2008 12:09 AM

Holy Crap!! That's an incredible display. My wife just wouldn't understand though.

Chin_Lee 07-30-2008 01:39 AM

Welcome to Canreef. Nice photos and setup.
Just wondering if you have any tricks or techniques to get your copperband to start eating?

a4twenty 07-30-2008 02:02 AM

wow, thats and incredible tank. i can't believe i haven't seen any pics of it before, must not be looking in the right places.

It's all about Tangs. My favourite.

Why were you banned from AP and the Tang Police?
What are the names of the rare tangs you keep?
Thank you

No tricks. I guess I just got lucky. He's a few yrs old, but if I remember correctly he spent his first few days in the top corner of the tank. Eventually he toughened up. Now he's at the front of the pack when fish when foods in the tank. He only eats frozen foods and keeps the display tank aptasia free. Sometimes I even scrape a few aptasias off the glass in my refugium and add them to the display for him to eat. He's a big copperband, biggest I've seen.

Myka 07-30-2008 04:35 AM

Wowzers!!!

In short, I got banned for arguing that you can keep many tangs in one tank without severe aggression as long as you keep them well fed. Here is the link to the thread and what I got banned for:

yikes thems some hardcore tang police. I love that one guy that even by his own admission has too many tangs and seems to think he's the only one allowed to do that. Its a good thing we all follow the steadfast rules in this hobby that way we never make any advancements or learn anything
That site makes me shake my head. I used to surf there all the time but it seems they're hardcore about everything esp the super long tank nformation/signature with tank information in it. Hehe now that I think of it, I think Tony got banned for not filling out his tank info section. Now thats ruling with an iron fist!

You got banned because you refused to listen to the advice you sought in putting five tangs in the 150 gallon you had at the time. That was excellent advice.

I see you took the advice and moved up to a 600 gallon.
Good move!

Actually, it was another guy ("reefy") with a 150 who asked about adding tangs to it. Cougarman just jumped in with his opinion.

You got banned for that?!? Wow

I got banned because I put something smart @#$ in the signature fields because I got annoyed about filling out new forms every time I visited the site.

Ya they want you to do that so they can bash your approach to reefkeeping. If I was a newbie, I'd never ask a question in a thread on that site.

Delphinus 07-30-2008 03:58 PM

I did the same thing with the information fields and the same thing happened to me. I totally meant to go back and fill them in properly one day soon, but it wasn't soon enough and the hammer fell. As staff here I really don't want to comment on another board's policies but I will say this, the incredible signature load and the plethora of fonts and colours in every thread made it very difficult for me to zero in on the actual content of posts. I was constantly scrolling this way or that to try to find the ONE line of post content buried in literally screen fulls of irrelevant info. I kind of like the idea of posting tank specs but a link to a page with the info would suffice rather than reading it over and over (and over and over). Plus it was really not conducive to folks who have multiple tanks with different methodologies per each tank. Ooops, I guess I commented after all. Well, just pretend I didn't say any of this, Ok?

PS. "Alot" isn't a word. I can still hear my grade 6 teacher ranting about "alot" a lot. She did rant a lot about us using "alot" a lot. "Alot isn't a word. That's "A-let." A lot is a lot, as opposed to a little. We don't say alittle. But you're saying alot a lot." OKAY MISS SAMPHIRE I GET IT! I'm 37 now! Please get out of my imagination!!!

Whatigot 07-30-2008 04:19 PM

I'm cancelling my membership with AP cuz I just joined a month ago and it would only be a matter of time before I come up with some insightful contrarian idea that makes that moderator, founder and hitler go chinese republic on me....lol

I liked how he tried to cut down yur references to it being science by supplying his own brand of "science" that also had no backing to it.

It was like he was fighting fire with fire but didn't know you could get burned doing it.

funny too that there is no mention in the thread of you being banned for voicing your honest opinion in a non combative way, he just said his final non sensical piece and closed it....lol
what a muppet moderator.

thanks for that, now I saved myself another bulletin board membership....

I very much envy your fish collection and your success of keeping them healthy. A few questions if you don't mind me asking.

1. How many fish in the system?
2. How many feedings per day?
3. How much water change and frequency?
4. What does your refugium contain?
5. Can you explain your new fish acclimating process?

With a tank of beloved fishes I know it is very risky to add a new potentially infected fish. What measures do you take in introducing new fish to the main tank. Please don't mind all the question as I would like to have some ideas from a real experienced person so I can apply to a similar tank.

That's got to be my favorite fish. You have a great tank! Welcome!

Matt 07-30-2008 09:27 PM

You keep tangs in a 600? How are they supposed to find room to swim?

Anyone who keeps any wild animal in captivity is automatically part of the 'problem'. There is very little moral high ground. We ALL do it for selfish reasons, not for the well-being of the animals. We - none of us - 'saved' a tang from the local shelter. We condoned its wild capture (and the death of several others for every long-term survivor). I'm OK with that. I also condone the death of cod, haddock, sole, and many other varieties of fish. Because, selfishly, I find them tasty.

Keep tangs in a 10 gallon, if you find that satisfying, as far as I'm concerned.

I'd estimate about 50 fish in the system. I feed them twice per day, a mix of frozen, freeze dried and flakes. I also feed my corals a mix of cyclopeeze, reefroids and coral frenzy every other day. The entire system is 1000 gallons and I change 50 gallons/wk. The refugium is 120 gallons and has mostly aptasia, a patch of seagrass, lots of other critters and an 8 inch sand bed. There is also a 90 gallon tank with a 16 inch sand bed plumbed inline.
To acclimate fish I put them in a 130 gallon tank that I have plumbed inline. They stay there for several weeks until they're eating well and have recovered from any disease they may have aquired. Also if they require any tx for disease I can catch them easily and tx them in a hospital tank. Since the acclimation tank is the same water as the display there is minimal stress moving the fish to the display. They usually hide for a few hours then gradually venture out of the rocks.

wickedfrags 07-31-2008 11:24 AM

Wicked. The fattest and happiest fish I have ever seen.

To give you some perspective, the sailfin tang illustrated is probably 12" in size, with a massive girth.

michika 08-01-2008 02:47 AM

Oh AP...good times. I was banned for my "bad" spelling. Apparently you aren't allowed to spell words with Us. I write color as colour, and according to them it happened one too many times.

I really like seeing how things are placed in other people's tanks. The variety of tangs you have is fantastic, and I hope to achieve something similar in my 1000g system. Its also great to see a bit behind the scenes!

Ya Dude 08-01-2008 03:48 AM

I think we should ban Cougerman too cause he makes me look dumb

Huh? You mean American? US: Color; Canada: Colour. AP is a Canadian site, right? If you got banned for spelling colour colour, well...I'd say they owe you a big apology.

Wow that's crazy Michika. I'll be sure to check my spelling on this site. I've already been warned about it!!!! LOL. Atleast I got in a few choice words to the posiedon before he banned me. LOL. Do you have a thread for your 1000 gallon? You should start one if you don't. Next tank I build I will start a thread for it.

Hi, welcome to canreef! I love your tank, I'm so jealous! I love the fish in this hobby, my dream would be to have an enormous tank with one of every type of fish in it. I'm just wondering what type of tang is in this pic? Thanks Laurie

Its a Dussumieri tang. He's my prize, about 11 inches long. Probably the friendliest fish I have. I spotted him at a LFS a few yrs ago. He was mislabled and I got him for $50. He was about 4-5 inches at the time.

WOW sweet deal! Thanks for letting me know, he's a very cool looking tang.

Hey Jared~

Welcome to Canreef! Truly, you will find this forum to be friendly and full of good knowledge.

Your collection of fish is stunning, and they look fat and happy.

Like everyone else has said, I can't believe what a gong show AP is. I'm tempted to go over and have myself banned on purpose now, lol. What a joke!

However, we're better for it, because now you're here and the more the merrier!

Thanks Der_Iron_Chef. You're right it's definately friendly over hear. I might have to pack up my tank and move out West. Its been a few days and still no negative posts. I thought for sure the Tang police would be cruising this site too.
