The Lotus is a good choose for a sunny Sunday fun car As much as I like Bimmers and Porsche I drive a Front load Garbage truck around Vancouver all day and you cant good more then a block with out seeing one They are Belly button cars ( every bodys got one ) The Lotus is a purists car all performance built to do one thing and do it well

Good luck with it

Oh and by the way I have seen a total of 3 differant lotus's in Vancouver I know there is more then that around you just doint see them

Tarolisol 03-27-2008 02:25 PM

Unless your a small man or a women I would skip the lotus not just for size but it looks rediculus seeing a guy driving such a femanine car.

I would go for the NISSAN GTR it would destroy any car mentioned in this thread plus most other cars out there.

mr_alberta 03-27-2008 02:42 PM

The GTR is a nice car and will most likely beat the Lotus in a straight line, and I'm sure a GTR handles fairly well, but there is no way a stock GTR will outhandle a stock Lotus.

I still vote for an Aerial Atom though! Or buy and old 1st or 2nd generation miata and modify it (if you are into that).

VFX 03-27-2008 03:52 PM

That thing may be virtually as quick as a 911 Turbo but man it's fugly!

Give me an Elise R. Almost as quick in a straight line (who only drives in straight lines?), much better handling & looks so much better.

oh & being a 5' 8" asian dude, an Elise is no problem :)

Im not sure where you guys get your info but the Nissan GTR has one of the best times on the nurburgring track in germany, and thats not a straight line. Beating out million dollar cars. Faster then the porche 911 turbo and carrera GT on straight and winding tracks.

Tarolisol 03-27-2008 04:58 PM

Also the Elises speed comes from how light it weighs which means big people can slow down the car immensly.

You don't happen to own a Skyline do you?

Dont want this to become a slagging match over which car is better than which...

I love the GTR (I've owned an R32 and driven R33's & R34's) & I never said it's only good in straight lines.

As regards 'info' on lap times... the GTR is actually slower than a Carrera GT around the 'Ring.

7:28 - Porsche Carrera GT (official factory time 7:32)
7:38 - 2009 Nissan GTR
7:40 - Porsche 997 Turbo
8:32 - Porsche Boxster S
8:42 - Lotus Exige

Don't forget that one of the prime objectives of the GTR development team was to beat the 911 Turbo around the Nurburgring.

They achived that goal but, at what cost?

The car is stupendously fast, handles well (but not as well as a Lotus!) and is reasonably cheap for the performance (approx. $80k) - but it's heavy (near 4000lbs), soul-less (drives like a Playstation game - many reasons for this) and at the end of the day, looks damned ugly!

Put it on a tighter track (that is more typical of the kind of tracks you & me would drive around) and the GTR would start to become ponderous, heavy & underbraked compared to 'trackday' cars such as Elise & Exige.

The slower lap time around the 'Ring is due to the Lotus hitting it's rev limiter on the straights (small, low horse power engine).

That's the beauty of the Elise :)

Let's put it this way...

Some people prefer to knock down a house with a wrecking ball & some would prefer a small, well placed explosive charge.

A contender for out handling an Elise...

Ok, so I'm not a small guy, about 6 feet and the size of a football player but I'm willing to drop 50 lbs just so I can fit in this car. I figure if I could fit inside my 350Z I'm pretty sure I could squeeze into a Lotus. As for the chick car comment, since when was a streetable race car a chick car .

I said it was a femanine car. I just think its funny seeing middle age men driving an elise. Just my opinion.

banditpowdercoat 03-28-2008 03:02 AM

Did you get the Lotus yet?? I passed a Orange Elise yesterday on Lougheed Hwy.. I was the one in the black 07 Dakota with a jealous stare LOL:lol:

I dont think i called you middle aged. But a 6 foot tall football player might look funny driving that car as well.

chevyjaxon 03-28-2008 12:46 PM

I wanna race too like i said my crown vic has got enough work done to it to pass most of the cars mentioned on a straight away it will fry the rubber off the wheels the best part is i can do all of this while being imensly comfortable remember there is no replacement for displacement the cars youve mentioned with the exception of the viper all have 6 bangers at best the next step for my car is to add a supercharger to it and really wake up that motor im expecting to bring it up to 650 rwhp dont belive me check this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QAWuH...eature=related
anyways its a cheap way to have one of the fastest most comfortable cars out there

Now, I may be biased here gentlemen, but speaking of a small explosive charge....
I gotta say you could always pony up 6 or 7 grand for a mint 1g eagle talon and then put another 4 or 5 into the engine and drivetrain and be putting out 450 at the wheels...

Thats what i did.

banditpowdercoat 03-28-2008 09:39 PM

Gahh, 77 Trans Am, Pure Pontiac Power here, 462CI, Buckets of Tq, :D
Updated suspension of course, made to turn corners.....FAST

I guess I should mention at this point that I am currently building a project car as a hobby. Me and my dad have built hot rods all my life together and I've always owned an old school VW beetle since I was 15. So I'm currently building a 1964 Canadian Standard VW Beetle. Bone stock interior except a roll cage, Factory color, Lowered a bit with polished five spokes and M&H cheater slicks out back. Powerplant will be a 2332 cc turbocharged (20psi), fuel injected, nitroused VW based mill that I'm hoping will put out at least 500 horse before the 125 shot of juice.

Just wondering if you ended up getting a Lotus. I've been looking into them pretty seriously lately. Like yourself, having a tough time deciding between the Exige and the Elise....

lorenz0 05-24-2008 07:20 PM

If you have the money for the Exige go for it. Its faster and looks 100% more sexy compared to the Elise. The Elise is still a great car but more of an entry level lotus, simlar to buying a 1 series BMW.

Which btw, right now as much as I hate BMW drivers god i am in love with the 335. Saw a white coupe last night and those are gorgous cars. I haven't had the chance to driven 1 yet (perks of being a mechanic) but the 328 and 330's felt like a really heavy car. Hopefully the performance out of the 335 makes up for how heavy they are.

Than again with lotus remember you have to be a small guy for these cars. 6' is the tallest and anything over 190pounds and your going to feel cramped in them. None the less a great car and built for performance and handling.

04scoobysti 05-25-2008 12:36 AM

The 1-Series may be BMW entry level line, but the 135i is anything but entry level in performance. It not only can be trimmed to have all the luxury as the 3-series, but is a much tighter, lighter and faster car. The cockpit is essentially the same size as the 3-series and 6'+ drivers will not have any problem with headroom (as with most cars if your closer to 7'+ you will have to do some shopping around and custom seat and rails would be in order).

I have been in the Exige and at 6' 4" you begin to have issues with visibility, Also there will be next to no head room when you decide to wear a helmet and track your car

You will not be disappointed with the exige, just looking at the car puts a smile on my face whereas the 1 and 3 series are so bland most people wouldn't give them a second look. I suggest the BMW M coupe as an alternative to the Exige, great character, comparable performance, more luxury, more room and great fun on track days!

Thanks to your recommendation and after much deliberation and investigating i just bought a 2007 BMW M coupe. They are a sweet car and you don't see many of them on the road.

Because it's been proven that people that drive such a car can't spell.
