Is that the sun coral that was in the sump on the front show tank at the store?
|
Hey Mark, no, Japarto got some more sun corals in and I bought one of those instead. (That one suncoral was moved to the top and it looks so nice in Japarto's tank  )
|
Oh, I think I found out what that mystery coral is, thanks to melev in RC. It looks to be a cup coral.
|
It's a beauty just the same.
Cheers, |
I found anothe unknown, much like the first one (still unknown), in my pico tank but there are two of them. Again, my camara does not have zoom (I know, I know, time to upgrade that too  ), so this is the best picture I can get. They are both brownish-red with a round base that looks like it's hard (but hard to say), the tips of the tentacles are whitish and tend to connect like webs of a ducks feet. Any help would be great, if not I'll just wait until it gets bigger.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...wn-in-Pico.jpg here is another picture of the sun coral during feeding time. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23.../suncoral2.jpg |
Also, is this a type of SPS coral or bryozoan (the white spot with small polyps). The base looks to be blue then there is a layer of off-white (may be the skeleton with small indentations) and then the very white layer on the outside with little polyps.

Looks like a sponge to me, but it's hard to tell from that pic..
|
Here is an updated picture. The new additions are: frogspawn, blue sponge, green, leafy macroalgae, a few more mushrooms, three large snails, and two blue-legged hermit crabs.

Cool sponge and starfish. Is that a redtipped starfish or a linkia?
|
aquariumgirl
was that you would sold me the fresh water fish on Sunday? Steve |
Hey Steve, it might have been me, there was another girl working that day too.
Murminator, I think they are the porous sea star in Shimek's book Marine Invertebrates. They are not Linckias, I think the arms are too short and they move slower. |
Hey everyone....lastnight was almost the worst day of my life!! (well, maybe more my BF since he had to listen to me whine  ). We had a power outage lastnight that lasted for about 8 hours  And, of course, I was worried about my aquariums and he was worried about the food in the fridge/freezer. It wouldn't have been so bad, but the power went on and off from midnight to about 3 am. We stayed up all night because as soon as we had everything turned on the power would go off and we would have to start all over making sure everything was turned off. Crazy, I tell you, CRAZY!! But all in all, everyone made it!
|
Thats awesome that everything survived. Power outages can be real nail biters thats for sure. One day I woke up before my alarm and realized and the power had gone out, I called in to work that day and told them I wasn't coming until the power was on cuz my fish were more important than work (no I wasn't talking to my boss at the time ).
Christy :) |
Just a few updated pictures, yet again
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...l/red-star.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...Aug-4-2005.jpg I moved the suncoral just to make it easier to feed it, does anyone have any suggestion to what I can put in the spot where the suncoral was? It gets a little bit of light and lots of flow. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...pawnupdate.jpg The frogspawn looks even better then when I first put it in!! The clowns love it! |
Very nice tank.. glad to hear everything pulled through that power outage as well!
Just a question about your sun coral.. I just picked one up, and have it in a mixed shade/light area in the tank receiving medium/high flow.. How do you get yours to extend during the day? How do you feed yours? Just getting other reefers advice and tips... |
Thanks OCDP, about the suncoral...when I first got mine I put in in parial shade and light. It didn't open a whole lot only when I feed it. But as soon as I moved it to where there was more light and more flow it seems much happier and opens whenever I feed the fish (twice a day in the morning and evening).

Hey . Well maybe I shall try and put mine more in a little more light.. although I have seen mine open quite a bit already
Here's another little tip if you didn't know... I have been feeding cyclopeeze (freezedried) and flakes, and that seems to be enough to get mine to open up ! |
Thanks OCDP  I've been feeding mine frozen cyclop-eeze (works great hey?) and mysis shrimp.
|
My new open brains (how exciting :silly: hehe), very cool looking!
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...Aug-7-2005.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...openbrains.jpg Here are some small zoos I've been collecting in the pico tank  http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...mgirl/Zoo1.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...mgirl/Zoo2.jpg |
It looks really good now, those brains add some great contrasting colors. The brains look quality too.
|
Thanks deacon, I really like how the little tank looks now, very happy! So far both the brains are doing well, the green one hasn't eaten yet, but seems to puff up when the light go off the same as the red brain. However, the red brain eats like a pig (try not to feed too, too much, but couldn't resist. Very cool to watch it eat, hehe). I've also noticed a small little crab (probably a anemone crab) living in between one of the folds of the red brain. It's very small, maybe only a quarter of an inch!
|
Okay, I was staring at my tank tonight and saw this huge ugly butt poking out of a live rock. This crab is huge (about two inches long!!) I don't know how I could have not seen this crab before.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...l/bad-crab.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...bad-crab-2.jpg Unfortunatly, my little anemone crab (different one then the one living in the open brain) was on the same rock and he had fallen out during the process. He made it and I put him back in the tank (same hole he was living in too). http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...one-crab-2.jpg |
Well, I started up a 3 gallon mantis tank!! There are two mantis in the tank, but one is having a little trouble staying rightside up. I also have a hand full of small crabs in case anyone wants to come over for a seafood salad  , JK, they are reserved for the mantises  Oh and I also have a sundial snail, but he doesnt get to eat any zoos (I like my zoos  )

Just a few more pictures, my mantis is starting to venture a bit and I changed some things in the pico, yet again, hehe. Oh, yesterday my star fish got stuckin the intake of the AC, poor guy, but he's healing fast!
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...ug-16-2005.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...rl/Mantis3.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...tis-Shrimp.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23.../Hurt-Star.jpg |
Lookin really good there...
Cool Mantis  Also, sorry to hear about your starfish incident.. hopefully he makes a full and speedy recovery for you! |
Your 10g is lookin' awesome. You have more specimens in there than I have in my 135g!
BTW...how do you post so many pics without goin' over your allowable limit? Cheers, |
Thanks OCDP, the star fish is almost completly healed, and all his little legs are in working order
Hello there Mark! Really, I have more specimens then you!!?? Hehe, 10 gallons is fairly small and cost much less then stocking up a 135 gallon tank. You'll get there...someday... |
Hey everyone, just posting some more Pictures!! Recent aditions are: Pistol shrimp and goby pair in the ten gallon, a green chromis in the mantis tank. And then there is just another poor, very poor picture of the mantis shrimp.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...ShrimpGoby.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...eenChromis.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...rl/Mantis4.jpg |
First I would like to say thanks to Rob for the sexy shrimps!! When I put them in I don't think they knew what to do first ("should we go left or right??" "How about down or up??" )
Tonight I made a very exciting discovery. I found these little yellow polyps and I think they are baby sun corals!! I'm guessing they have a pelagic larval stage? Does anyone have any experience with suncorals, do they multiply and grow fairly fast? Here are some pictures (sorry the pictures aren't very good, I don't have zoom on my camara, it's very old!) And there are some updated pictures as well. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...uncorals-3.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...uncorals-2.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...-suncorals.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23.../suncoral4.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...and-Clowns.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...rl/sexies2.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...irl/Sexies.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...frogspawn4.jpg |
The tank is looking great and I love your mantis'. The first picture looks liek a g. smithii (like mine) and I don't know what the second is but it sure is pretty.
Cheers, - Chad |
Thanks fish, G. smithii?? I hope it grows up to be just as beautiful as yours  .
|
Haha, I don't think you've got anything to worry about.
I've only got one nice tank and one nice mantis - looks like you've got me beat on both counts! - Chad |
I don't know, your little tank is quite the invention and your videos are fantastic!! We can split the greatness between the both of us shall we? Oh, and congrates on the thread of the month entry (did you win yet??)
|
Aquariumgirl I'd have to say those are baby sun corals! Ive owned a few sun corals but ive never had that happen. However i've seen it happen in many ppl's tanks, usually they do that at night so u would never see it.
Once they get big enough try feeding them? Theres a good thread on RC that shows an acan reproducing,in the lps forum  BTW if they are doing that in your tank, your definetly doing something wright! |
I second that, you are definitely doing something right. Have you looked into whether or not they are just yellow polyps? That would be my first guess. Here is a link:
http://animal-world.com/encyclo/reef...llowpolyps.htm If they are an lps like a sun coral you will be able to see their skeleton. Cheers, - Chad |
They might be yellow polyps, they don't seem to be the same shade of yellow or look, then again I don't see a skeleton yet. But I was wondering if sun corals have skeletons right away or do they gradually form a skeleton as they get bigger. I've started to add kalkawasser drip to the tank, maybe that will help if they are sun corals. Either way they look neat!
|
I'm pretty sure they are sun's,they look orange even in the photo's.Also with your sun coral looking that plump and healthy, theres a good chance that they did reproduce! They also look like they are kind of in random spots and if they were yellow polyps they would share a mat.
If they are suns, you should feel pretty lucky that doesnt happen in many tanks.Sun corals when they reproduce non asexually start as a little nub of flesh so i would assume that they will develope a skeleton later! |
Haha, it looks like there is a lot of interest in how this turns out! Don't get me wrong, I hope they are sun corals - because that would be a lot cooler. But they look just like any yellow polyps that I have seen (yellow polyps do not grow in a mat but pop up as individual polyps). Maybe BobI can shed some like of the subject if he stops by. I know that he has some.
Cheers, - Chad |
