Bah, only 2 types of tanks, SPS tanks and those that want to be SPS tanks
for the record we have gone through this 2 or 3 times be for, a TOTM on a smaller board is a waist of time. not enuf people to see new stuff. are we all that petty that we need to win a prise or praise about our tanks? to me a TOTM is nothing but a ego booster for something that should have been created with your personal enjoyment in mind not that of others. so in other words, who cares what others think about your tank as long as you enjoy it (as long as your not abusing creatures that is) Steve PS. I voted NO. |
Alright, so we know Steve's tank won't be featured.

Tank of the Month
I like the idea of maybe a quarterly TOTM where everyone submits their photos and they are voted on like a poll. Once someone wins, they can no longer be considered in future polls unless a drastic change has been made to their tank like going from sps to softies or vica versa. Also, making this a quarterly thing would help assist with the problem of this board being somewhat smaller than others. Quarterly polls would also give people more of an opportunity to improve their tanks over the next three months to get ready for the next TOTM. Just an idea.
|
One of the reasons TOTM hasn't survived is because Titus, in his infinite generosity, has always felt a gift or prize should be awarded. We weren't able to come up with sponsorship for the long haul. As for TOTM being a self-serving pat-on-the-back kind of indulgence; I'd say that it's a great learning tool for all. You get to see how a system was designed and with what in mind. You get to see some pictures. It's basically the reason we hold reefclub meetings at people's homes.

That way those of us with no photographic skills can still get our tanks featured   |
Canreef TOTM sounds good
|
I think a TOTM would be awesome. You get to share your ideas and visions. People keep reefs for all different reasons, corals, fish, inverts, some just like the equipment. If there is a tank of the month, everyone is goin to get something out of it. when i was a beggining RC TOTM was a wealth of info and ideas for mine. Just coming down to vancouver for the van.Aquar thing I saw at least 6 months worth of TOTM. for prizes you could just give a 20$ gift card from J&l or something.
and no i dont think that all SPS sytems should dominate, softies are just, if not more beatiful...man I'm gonna have some death threats :-? I really hope this goes through and look forward to seeing the many awesome systems. tb |
I voted "no."
This is too small a board to sustain it (monthly). Perhaps a "quarterly" tank feature? Also, I think the volunteer/s will find that it is a LOt of work, and it will peter out over time. Call me a pessimist... but we've all seen it happen. I would be more open to it, if it was a random selection - no voting. A contest or competition - bah. Over time, every member's tank could be featured (if they wanted), giving a realistic representation of members' systems. "Warts and all," as someone mentioned. A prize is also unnecessary - a showcase, a learning tool - fine. But a contest? Bah. (Steve - I like this "bah.") |
Would "Featured Aquarium of the Month" be more palatable to some of you no voters?

And as for making it a contest... thats just plain dumb IMO. |
Well it should set your minds at ease that there isn't going to be a prize. I have to wonder why anyone would care if there was though?
|
There should absolutely be no prize. I can't imagine anyone wanting anything but recognition for their tank to be featured.
|
the only one who seems to have brought up the prize was titus, the rest of us dont care we all seem to want a totm in some form or another. if canreef dosnt want to endorse this i say we do it ourselves within the canreef community. we can do the design, hosting and selection ourselves.
|
I'm not seeing the point in a tank of the month. Just everyone post pictures of their tank and the specs in the Tank Gallery and be done with it.   Is it the case that people don't voluntarily want to post their tank pictures and specs unless they get some sort of recognition?
|
What about something along the lines of 'Progression of Tanks'...?Having a tank of the month is a wonderful idea, but something like this would allow us all to display our tanks, from brand new ones to very established ones.So many of us have different ideas, different goals etc,if there were to be something along the lines of,lets say 'age' of tanks, from 0-6 months, 6months-1yr, 1-2 yrs etc,we can see eachothers as well as whos in 'our category' and watch the progression.A little write up from each of what size, stats etc, then a link to our own hosted picture gallery.Do an update every month per say. Then those who feel they love thier own tanks, but not up to 'snuff' with others at moment, wont feel so overwhelmed by tanks they admire but just cant compete with.Anyways, just a thought.... :)
|
I have to agree Sam. If people want to post pics of their tanks, why not do so? I do when the mood is right
Do I want to be TOTM with my butterfly/moorish idol/sps/clam reef? Or my 67g trigger/LPS, softie, zoo, chocolate star tank ? Not too bloody likely. Why? Cause it won't work for the majority of people reading it. |
While the "honour" of being TOTM is something, it really doesn't mean as much considering the rather small population we have here. But Sam did just give me another thought... Why not have EVERYBODY do a TOTM?
(What the hell did he just say???) Think about it. It would be an invaluable resource for newbies and a great collaborative effort. If we can get additional hosting (it doesn't seem fair to overburden Canreef further), it should be fairly easy to get up. Here's what I'm thinking: Everybody does the RC-style TOTM spiel for their tank. That is almost always divided up into - preamble about what got them into the hobby - tank equipment - tank denizens - maintenance schedule - things they really like or really dislike about what they did - plans for the future If everybody who has a tank they'd be willing to share (I have dozens of DIY under-construction photos I took which might benefit someone who is considering building a stand or a surge or a really poorly thought out canopy), we could each take a ton of photos of our tanks and then select a spread that gives the overall view, the equipment, some "behind the scenes" shots of how the fish room is laid out or how maintenance gets accomplished, several closeups of prized specimens (preferably with some time in between, so say Bryan can show how much his acros have grown in the space of 6 months), and then maybe a few shots of John skinny dipping with the belugas that night at the aquarium (or did everybody leave early???)! Just a thought.. Perhaps a bad one. Somehow I think it would be a tremendous resource for fresh blood in the hobby, though. Getting a tour of someone's entire system from conceptualization to deployment is a far better education that having some dweeb on RC tell you "u should use the search button or post pics of urself!". |

Small Population?
Prizes, no prizes? Bragging rights? Too much work? You guys really now how to suck the fun out of everything. I've seen a lot of really good ideas here. I like the "featured" tank/tanks of the month best. I like how some people will volunteer to help out with this. Sure it would take a bit of work in the beginning to set up, but once it is I think it would be much easier to maintain. Much like a reef aquarium? Just some more ideas I thought of. Why not post what the featured tank catagory will be for the next month. This puts the onis on the reefer to put themselves out there for the competition. For example, June's featured tank of the month will be Nano's. If you have a nano tank contact the volunteer TOTM people with pics or whatever and try your luck. The next month could be getto reefs, or super tanks and on and on. Quote:

TOTM isnt just about the pictures, it would list equipment, cleaning, livestock, the loverly cranberrry juice bottle they use for a collection cup, the soup can  (yeah, i got rid of that a few months ago :P)
I check out the picture section here maybe once a month, and even then.. its just to drool at peoples corals/tanks. There is little or no information about how the tank is taken care of, what they are doing etc etc etc. I don't think it should be voted on per se, but someone will have to make some sort of sellection. Not based on how 00ber it is, rather to change it up and show different types of tanks each time. I think quarterly would be great for this small a board. The greatest part of this would be that we could all share and comment on the tanks. Find ways that other people have saved some cash, where they have tried, and failed. What we would do if we had some of the same issues etc. I can find tanks to drool over any where on the internet. Most of the time/money that they have for them is nothing but a dream for me, and frankly, I have enough unatainable dreams :P |

hmm 79 people out of 1672, thats overwhelming  I don't think having a monthly category will work, as what if it is say "softy tank" but no one is ready with there tank and the ones that are have already been excluded as they have already been featured? do we skip that month? I think this could be a good thing but we need a heck of a lot more than 79 people voicing there opinion and willing to participate. I think if we could get say 500ish saying yes and willing to do it there might be some variety to choose from. Steve |
Just an FYI, we are planning on implementing this feature. We're just kicking around ideas now on layout, method, frequency and volunteers.
Keep the ideas coming. |
TOTM winner can host the next reef club meeting, how's that for a prize...
Doug PS I think it's a good idea, not every one can have a tank like Jamie Cross but Shao and others have darn fine tanks that I'd always love to see more of. |

Let's get them to post first !! |
I say yes, but call it "featured aquarium" or something.. totm is soo used

tank of the mouth
that would be aewsome to see. would be nice to here about others tanks and eq.
thanks ed |
I think it's a great Idea. But I've got the impression it isn't as simple as voting. There is a lot of background web page work and that is asking a lot of the MODS to keep that up.
But if someone is willing I think it would be great Jason |

I totally agree with Beth (back on page 4 ), its one thing to see a picture of a tank but for it to bea tank that canreef "features" or "focuses" on it would have a story behind it on how it ticks. Not alot of people have that sort of information in the pictures forum. To me its more interesting to know how they got the tank to that point, what tricks they use and how I can make it happen for my tank if I choose

seriously - if people will make it and host it, should be no problem. |
Im sure hosting it will be no problem for me and my wife. We run a couple dedicated servers with 1 TB of bandwidth a month each. they are on OC backbone so speed is no issue.
with the BW we use here it will be no problem :) |
