You are 100% correct, it is very difficult to read something that contains a lot of spelling errors. BTW it is "hornswoggled"

And true it is certainly not something I would lose a wink of sleep over.

Nemain 01-03-2005 09:57 PM

@Bob - I think this has come up before, I just dont care to spell correctly, I even know the word is spelled wrong.. and I just keep typing.... why.. same reason some people insist on wearing navy and black together I suppose.. to each thier own =)

@teevee - your multisyllabic discourse is beneficial to my deteriorating cranuim.

There is something wrong with wearing Navy and Black together  I had absolutely no idea  . I usually know I make a mistake when typing, and correct it before I move on. And it is their, not thier.

Or, type any single word in Google and click "definition" in the top right.

I do not own a paper dictionary either.

It's funny how people get so bent over the spelling and punctuation of others.

But what realy get's me confused on this board is how many people use the word "REEFER" in the wrong context.(I'm sure no one's talking about a refridgerated trailer......are they?)

Please refrain from doing this in the future as it gives me unwanted cravings at work!

SeaHorse_Fanatic 01-03-2005 11:20 PM

That's "witness" - just thought I'd join the fun.

Nemain 01-03-2005 11:39 PM

i before e except after c , and multiple other exceptions... and yes Bob.. navy with black is bad.

I don't think spelling has anything to do with ones intellect, it is just a matter as to what is important to each individual. I would rather spend the five minutes it would take me to read over what I wrote doing something else.. besides.. i may have to get my glasses rather than just guessing the words o_O

Quinn 01-03-2005 11:39 PM

Actually, I've changed my mind. The CIA lists Fiji as a country, and since the CIA is a conspiracy, it's probably not true. Same goes for Canada.

That's exactly it. Frankly I don't give an Amphiprion percula's ass about most of the spelling and grammatical errors on this board, which we all know sometimes prohibits efficient communication (you know it's bad when a poor speller complains about someone else's poor spelling; then again, I like big words and in the past people have complained about this being inefficient because they're too lazy to use a dictionary  ). But Fiji is a place. This is like me asking someone if they live in Surray or how the weather is in Winnepeg (probably crap). I seriously wonder how many reefers think the place actually is "Figi", considering how prevalent the misspelling is...

And the translated version for the simple people like myself!

To be perfectly correct, it is not Golds, but Gold Aquariums. There is nobody called Gold associated with that place.

you mean engerish.. jeese, aint you learnt nothin in skool.

Cap'n 01-04-2005 05:32 AM

I find grammatical errors difficult and annoying to read. While an honest mistake or typo should be skimmed over and forgotten an obvious misunderstanding of the subject matter (Mount Fuji rock in a reef tank) or the written English language (are instead of our) deserves a correction, or at least an explanation. Personally, I would rather know when I make a mistake, hopefully I will be able to learn from it.

To not do a quick proofread of your post shows a disregard for those you are writing to.

comma required after forgotten. You said you wanted to know...

Cap'n 01-04-2005 05:46 AM

I think you're right. I tend to overdue it on the commas at times. Been trying to cut back lately.

Nope, just trying to point out how annoying the spelling police can be!! And even the people that do care make mistakes with spelling and punctuation, sometimes repeatedly throughout a thread.
And I'm thinkin' that anyone that cares to post their opinion in a thread like this should certainly ensure their spelling is right on!!

This has been an entertaining thread...

Should be anyone who cares.

smokinreefer 01-04-2005 06:17 AM

yeah, i find spelling and grammatical errors annoying...on an internet forum, not so much.

as someone already mentioned, sure some things warrant pointing out, like fuji for instance, since it is an easily correctable mistake, and something that is directly related to this hobby, but i figure as long as the posters idea is conveyed easily, then it's all good.

what really picks my butt is when i try to read someones post that is really really long and is written without any punctuation whatsoever so it is just this one super duper long run on sentance that it actaully looks like some kinda legal document i mean come on how hard is it to throw in a few punctuation marks or to even just hit the enter button to space things out a bit and seperate some of the main ideas behind the post it really does make a big difference as to how easy it would be to read so i dont lose my place in the paragraph it would really help me to help you thanks much appreciated

thats no fair using a modern dictionary. Just goes to show how lazy our language is getting when we have to add Overdo to the dictionary instead of just using Over do. Only been in there for 5 years according to the reference. All because some receptionist wants to save one key stroke

Impressive. But language is an evolving medium. I suppose if we get everyone saying "Figi", they'll make it an alternative spelling...
