Tank is almost empty - just a few stubborn fish left to catch.
The egg crate was used to corner fish to get with a net but the fish that are left can all swim through the holes. http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...ps9aa564eb.jpg Found this rascal after all the rock came out, I've been after him for a while :twised: - he's now living in the sump with the other bad crabs http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...ps3d890710.jpg here's a couple of the final corals I pulled out - Heliopora colony http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...pscd6d35d6.jpg mini carpets http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...ps46dac3a2.jpg green polyp toadstool ( mad and shrunk up - the piece is about 9" across) http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...psdef90ecf.jpg |
When I get it drained & cleaned I will taking out the closed loop pipes - YEAH!! I hate all that plumbing - always in the way. :twised:
Cover over the holes and once cured it's time to get the aqua/coral scaping done & let er' rip once again!! |
Sucked out the mud today - getting closer.....
|
I just realized I forgot to take pictures of the process after I emptied the tank.
Here's a summary: -disconnected the closed loop plumbing (dirty stinky job!) -patched the drilled holes in the back wall & the one in the overflow -went on vacation for a week (diving in Cozumel/Playa del Carmen:mrgreen:) while the sylicone dried -scraped off the old dried up coraline algae, etc. -filled the tank with a mix of used water & some fresh SW (using the water I had the rock & fish in for about 6 weeks in theory should minimize the new tank cycle) -I had done regular water changes:wink: -aquascaped with aprox 100 lbs of sand and 400 lbs of rock (there is a 20%/80% mix of established clean live rock together with the newly cured & about 10 lbs of live sand poured out on top of the new sand to seed it and get things cracking) Again in theory this should minimize the cycling process because of the bacteria, etc already present. -added the fish back in to the mix along with a few test corals Over the course of the next few weeks I will be transferring more corals I have in the prop tank & replace the old bulbs with new Phoenix 14K 250 watt MH bulbs. I will snap some pix of the new set up ASAP. |
Cannot wait to see more of your build as I keep checking on your post every day...

Wow, big effort!! Should be worth it though!!

Here is what the new rock work looks like. As you can see it is a more open floor plan with caverns, caves, swim-throughs & plenty of open areas. Lots of shelf space for corals on the top similar to what I had previously (but different)
Larger open spaces http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...ps84e4ca63.jpg FTS http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...ps1462aea4.jpg |
A while ago I made up a "garden" rock of Ricordia - here's what they look like now.
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...pse5c2982b.jpg A couple came off due to crowding so they formed another small rock. http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...ps8f664086.jpg Here's a blue one that got away from the heard and landed in the heliopora colony where it can flourish undisturbed. http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...ps12ecf71b.jpg |
The aquascape pix are a few weeks old so the tank is now much fuller so I will snap an updated FTS & post ASAP.
|
WOW looks great Greg, in case you havn't heard i hate closed loops as well. Can't wait to see more.
|
I have nothing against closed loops but the way it was plumbed into my system just didn't work for me.
|
off to a great start. that scape looks like a modern update to the coralmaster super shelf style.

Wow that's quite the shelf full of mini colonies, can't want to see this grow out. Was privileged enough to see the tank earlier on its it's life and wow of was beautiful. I have no doubt with your knowledge for growing Sps this will be stuffed in a few months. Good job on the come back we are currently going through a similar situation on less scale so we know what you went through.
|
Thanks very much. Yeah it needs about 8 - 12 months to really start filling in.

Tank is now almost fully loaded in regards to sps so I thought I would share a few photos.
Never fails - it seem that whenever I get the camera out the diamond gobies and wrasses go crazy in the sandbed and stir it up so the visibilty is less than optimal. I also have noticed that my foxface has taken a liking to nipping on my green polyp toadstool so now I want to take a picture the polyps are retracted.:twised: Here is a few tank shots anyways. RH side shots with some off the front glass reflections. http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...psd177f5fd.jpg http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...ps3877fbff.jpg LH front with a few fish http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...ps1e77e95f.jpg Full Frontal http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...ps60618d38.jpg |
Here's some proof that LED lights do look like the dance floor at a disco
I have 1 Radion in the RH front corner. ( sand on the rh side of the clam) http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...psf4d5f049.jpg |
