The reason is simple; some people like them enough to pay the asking price. Limited availability is what keeps captive bred "designers" at higher price points.

Wild caught fish usually have unique reasons for high price tags like inhabiting excessively deep waters or areas where permits are difficult to obtain. Some people like these fish enough that they are willing to pay $600 for a Black Tang, or $1200 for a Candy Basslet, or $20,000 for a Peppermint Angelfish.

I guess what I have is a smore...with that being said the dif between what I have and that pic are two spots on his white pattern. Pretty expense 300 dollar spot im my books
