I seriously doubt you are going to kill the stuff with light's out. I tried and it did not work for me and I did it 7 days. This plant can live much longer and you will kill everything in your tank before it die.

This is not cyano or diatome. If you want to do that, remove all your corals or they will die before that algae.

You can try high magnesium level too.

My yellow tang did not toutch the stuff at all.

Alright... blackout starts today. I'm relocating my clams and a couple corals to the display tanks, but all the Xenia, mushrooms, frogspawn, and zoa's are going to have to suffer. Thoughts on how long? I'm thinking 5-6 days blackout + snails + manual removal.

no idea how to deal with it but you got my sympathy

You have my sympathy as well.

That being said, if you look at it differently you could have one funky "planted" marine tank with crazy purple algae!

Good luck with the battle!

LOL. My five year old nephew was over and thought the tank looked soooo pretty. It's his new favorite tank.

If Red Coral doesn't have any Mexican turbos, Riverfront always has nice big ones.

I just fought a battle with this stuff, not quite as bad but a few of my rocks did look like that also. I bought some turbo snails about 2 weeks ago. Now I don't know for sure if it was them that ate it all or because its winter now and I have been back to my normal weekly water changes and better tank maintenance schedule but it is basically gone. The sails were on it so I think they did help.

It just so happens that my purple tang eats that crap (and bubble algae) so I've never had the problem. I'll start the bidding at $200... (joking ) I like Dez's idea though. Bring some into a LFS and see if any of their fish for sale will eat it.

Bought 6 mexican turbos today, took out all the rock that didn't have coral on it and I'm cooking it. Introduced my Cowrey snail which seems to love it. I know I said blackout, but I've lost so many corals already, the thought of losing more makes me cringe.

I'll see how the snails make out coupled with very frequent water changes.
