On the 42g hex we have a 175w 5500k MH. We like the look of daylight in the tank, so we didn't go higher with the k rating. For more detailed info here's my webpage of the 42g:

If you are in interested in keeping SHs, do LOTS of research before buying. The SHs at you lfs will be wild caught. Some WC may only eat live food and will soon die unless you can provide them with an unlimited supply of live food. Brine shimp do not count as live food as their nutritional value is that of cardboard. Pods in a well established refugium will soon be eaten, and are not to be relied upon for the long term well being of your SHs.

It is preferable to buy CB SHs that already have been trained to eat frozen mysis (preferably PE mysis). CBs can be bought online at:
