Hey George,
It's a Carnation Coral (Dendronephthya). It's a non-photosynthetic filter feeder. During the day it is quite small, about the size of a baseball.

Yes I would consider Coraline algae on PH to be a good thing until it starts to choke off the flow of water

I have seen Carnation corals at both J&L's and Hidden Reef. I know hidden Reef has two right now.

Nice tank! What's your setup like?

Nice looking tank.

How long have you had the carnation? I've read that they are impossible to keep but would be interested to hear about actual experiences from hobbiests. Anyone else have experience with them good or bad?

I've only had it about a month and it has been doing very well. It tends to react to feeding time and expands so at around 7:30 it is fully extended and all polyps are out. So that is when I feed it usually Cyclop-eeze, Byrne, or DT's

Jason, any update on your carnation? I bought one 3 months ago. So far so good. I'd love to see a closeup of yours. They aren't suppose to make it past 4 months.

Hey Sam, Wow this is an old thread. Unfortunately the carnation didn't make it. It slowly started to desinigrate until there was nothing left.

Sorry to here your carnation didn't make it. The tank is very impressive.
I ordered a carnation around Christmas, when I opened the bag it smelled really bad. It didn't make it but I left the rock in the tank and now a month and a half later there are bits of it coming back. I keep my fingers crossed that it will recover.

Great looking tank. Here's a question.

Is this some kind of carnation coral as well?

That looks like a nepthea Snappy. Orange tree coral. Somewhat hardier.

Thanks, that's good news. I bought that rock because it had several small sponges(orange, black & cream coloured), sun polyps and that yellow stuff. It looked good in the store so I just had to have it. Thought it made a good mixture for my tank that with any luck might spread a bit.
