That's why you adjust your gate valve until the water level in the overflow is just barely trickling down your emergency drain.

One more reason I should have used a gate valve instead of a ball valve :p

I may also try a coupling on top of my emergency line so it is just about level with the tank water line to reduce the amount of drop of water into the overflow.
