We live on the ground floor, and the only suite on the ground flr in an apt bldg (so thank god I won't flood a neighbour's place).
But, I don't want any floods at all.
Hope my husband reads all of this since that will be HIS job hehe

Sorry Jeanna, you're not a true aquarist until you've filled your living room with seawater :D .
I'm an "advanced" awuarist, since I've filled the living room (twice), bedroom once and made it rain salt water into my office downstairs.
One of the most important accessories for a reef tank is a wet/dry vacuum -LOL

My suggestion after having the same problems everyone has had, including destroying a rather expensive area carpet is the "SCREAMER"

Its $25 and well worth the expense.

Shit happens, but I would rather know about it right away.

Unfortunately, you cant hear it when your not home. Also been there.....
