Letting the smoke out DO NOT ATTEMPT THE FOLLOWING!

yup that was my first thought also Darren, don't worry the parallel trials are done. one thing.. it was a GFIC outlet and the GFIC didn't do a damn thing to help didn't even trip it.. and I did test the gfic with a simulated fault and it worked like a charm so all the more weirdness.. hehe
now why didn't you just tell me I couldent do this befor instead of helping me try to figure out ways to prevent the power from going back into the other one hehe oh well it was worth a try .. 80.00 try but a try nunless.

changing the post title is fine with me.. screwed me up for a few min till I read what you taged onto my msg also.. but I think I clearly say "don't do this" as the reason I made this post was to say " I tried it now you don't have to cuz it doesent work and can be risky" hehe

when I do thease things I DO have a fire extingusher close

Hi,

Sorry to say, GFCI wouldn't have saved it. Maybe, an inline fuse may have saved it...now I think of it...shoot.

Oh well...sorry about giving out the bad advice. I'll give you a couple of my frags for free.

As for this combustable material on a hot ballast statement, I would be more worried about a super hot MH lamp attached to a wooden frame than a warm electronic ballast (40 degrees celcius). I would be slightly more worried if it was a magnetic ballast for VHOs...but not these electronic ones. However, I would mount it away from saltwater (i.e. outside the canopy) because saltwater vapour can corrode the ballast casing.

ya all my ballasts are outside of the hoof, what you see in that pic is tthe top of the tank hood but it was just there for the testing.. when I do the final wiring the set up will be in a box. don't worry about the advice Victor I went into thisone knowing that no one had tried it and that the out come could have very well been blowen ballasts. guess I will get that workhorse 7 I want now

Victor,

I had four of these similar ballasts mounted on wood. After about 6 months I moved one and found it scorched underneath. This is personal experience speaking. Not theory. Heat is heat. 40 deg celsius over time could be enough to start something.

Why take the chance?????

Steve,

Please edit your post about the way you obtained your extinguishers. I know it happens in the Navy alot, but it isn't what we want to hear about here. It boils down to theft. Sorry to put it that way.
