Thanks for that article! If the dead portion advances at all I'm taking him out right away. My main concern is that the presence of the algae will inhibit the healing process, but I think taking snippers to him would probably be worse in the long run.

Seeing your build has made me want to "risk" keeping this beautiful fish as well. I think it's time for me to do some research … because honestly, he's the focal point of your tank, and for good reason.

Look into fin rot as well. As the fin was damaged, it could have allowed an infection to get in there. One article I read stated you could try calling a vet who is familiar with fish and ask for advice or meds.

The algae thing is weird for sure.

Well, on the upside, all the gross algae covered bony rays have broken off and he looks much, much better. Things are starting to visibly heal. On the downside, over the past week One of my favourite and largest Acropora colonies has been getting damaged. I thought the tips were burning because of some issues with water chemistry, but it was only happening to the one coral.

Just busted Ferdinand in the act. he's big enough that Acropora sticks can fit right in his mouth. He's systematically eaten the growth tips off a diner plate sized coral in a week. I"m hoping this is a phase, but if he keeps doing it I'm going to have to find a new home for him.

It's great to hear he's starting to heal. I just read through the thread and was going to suggest you watch out for septicemia

Maybe he's craving Ca to help in the healing process :smile:

So how is the cowfish now? I'm looking forward to mine if it comes in to Oceanic on my special order. I really would like one and it will be the centerpiece fish for that tank, that's for sure.

he's doing great, his tail will probably never be totally the same again, but it's grown most of the way back. He's getting really quite large, and he's grown VERY fast so hopefully you've got a big tank.
