Bummer, bad scene. Don't give up on the GFCI thing though, human safety I reckon takes precedence over other mishaps. As suggested, don't run everything on your tank on a single device.

Magic man, you've potentially set yourself up for a different kind of 'experience', and not a good one by running a ground probe only. Don't really think this thread is the place to get into that topic too far, but do a little searching on the interweb & you'll find some info of interest with regard to GFCIs & grounding probes. In most jurisdictions it's against code to have receptacles near water (sinks, tubs, showers, etc.) that are not GFI protected. Perhaps the code doesn't specifically spell out 'aquarium', but it's kind of common sense, no?

Sorry to hear. No GFI here either, when power went out the GFI would have to be reset manually.

I use a grounding probe as well.....and a good pair of rubber shoes. Being an electrician in a past life youd think I would be promoting GFCI but they dont play well with others when it comes to aquariums and the longevity of your fish. Power fails....GFCI needs a manual reset. Some things are on a GFCI but not everything.
