You can get a first aid one from Acklands or such with the twist-on replaceable thumb horn. I like those. I had fun with one of them riding my mountain bike up the sunshine coast ... stupid drivers
I have a Kenworth T2000 setup in my truck ... works wonders for idiots in sidewalks and various oblivious drivers

On another note, I can't believe how stupid some people can be ... :twised:
I came to this thread to vent, but I'll keep it private

Since I'm here, I'll add this about our site;
Forum ettiquette is falling again, multi-posting for sale adds, numerous for-sale adds when you could post 1 and list your items in the 1 thread, bumping adds more than once per day ...

Getting tired of seeing so many FS adds one after the other

Bump; here's my pump for sale
Bump; here's my tank for sale
Bump' here's my sump for sale
Bump/ here's my I'm tired of seeing your 5 or 6 threads bumped everyday :twised:

And bumping old useless threads !!!

That is all, and I feel better now

Dearth 04-08-2015 02:28 PM

That there is the reason I rarely visit the FS forum not to mention I get annoyed because a lot of sellers absolutely refuse to ship and it isn't all that difficult to do all you need is a box, crushed newspapers and ship COD but I might as well be asking for a parcel to be sent to Timbuktu the way most of the sellers respond.

intarsiabox 04-09-2015 02:42 AM

I don't blame people for not wanting to ship items to strangers at all. If they aren't hoarders and don't have a bunch of random sized boxes laying around the house now they have drive around to stores to see about getting some free boxes, pack everything up, weigh and measure everything, get a quote from Canada Post, then ask the buyer if they are willing to pay said shipping costs, drive to post office and wait in line to send the package and finally hope that they don't get ripped off. Businesses have profits that are built into their prices to cover all these expenses, sellers on Canreef are usually losing money on everything they sell and some aren't interested in being out of pocket even more money and time. If sellers live in an area which they have no problem selling locally where the transaction can be done hassle free why wouldn't they? Personally I prefer to demonstrate everything I sell to the buyer so they know without a doubt before handing me over a dime they are getting exactly what was advertised and can go home happy about their purchase.

Aquattro 04-09-2015 03:57 AM

Agreed. I don't mind shipping terribly, but it's a huge hassle for me. I need to find a box, drive 15 minutes to a post office and wait there with a 5yo not happy about standing around. Overall not something I want to do, especially if I can just wait a bit longer to sell locally.
I'd never be out money because it doesn't get packed until I get paid. Overall not a huge deal, but I'd prefer if buyers just came to my house with cash :)

Myka 04-09-2015 04:02 AM

I prefer to ship. They pay, I ship. Don't have to worry about making an appt for them to come over, then they're late (or I am). Pain in the butt. I'd rather ship.

Aquattro 04-09-2015 04:06 AM

Ya, all personal reference. Some people don't have cars, have young kids, can't get to post office easily. Lots of people PM me asking if it's ok to send so-and-so money, or will they get ripped off, etc. It's not for everyone, so ship or don't, not gonna judge :)

I agree for most items unless breakable. You can now prepay for your Canada post shipments online, print the label and just drop off or even have it picked up if you're in an applicable zone so overall pretty easy but especially for me being located somewhat remote I'm usually forced to meet people in town anyway so much less hassle to ship on my schedule. That said I wouldn't hold anything against someone not willing to ship as it's certainly not worth the hassle for some people if they can sell local.

Ya, too bad, would have liked that skimmer :) But I agree, not something I would risk shipping.

Dearth 04-09-2015 04:30 AM

The vast majority of things sold are in major centres with a large population base but for those of us in smaller centres it sucks as in PG we are a 9 hour drive away from the major centres and for us the only option is for shipping or a 2 or 3 day trip. Yes I realize most sellers find shipping a pain in the arse and they have their reasons for not doing it but at the same time it's almost like we are in the smaller centres are being snubbed because we physically can't just jump in the vehicle and drive to the sellers place in the same city.

Yes I wish people weren't so intimidated by shipping because there is a huge amount of people who want the items in smaller centres but because as soon as shipping is mentioned all bets are usually off.

Yea Dean but you've bitched about ordering a package of Chemiclean
There's always great deals on the FS Forums. Your missing out on some good bargains if you choose to ignore those threads.
I've had great luck with every member I've dealt with. Everyone has a basic idea on how much something costs to ship. I give them a ballpark figure and if it's high than I'll usually eat the cost. I won't package something up and go to post office and get an estimate. My times worth more than that hassle. You just have to be careful who you deal with. Long time members who are active on the board are usually the ones to trust.

Barbecues, beaches and Kamikazes. No particular order required.

^^^X1000^^^

It does suck living somewhere there are few to no fellow reefers. I don't know how many times I've missed out on great deals because people won't ship. I totally get why people don't, it's a hassle. But it still sucks. Thankfully, there are those who will. My most recent purchase was from a guy who noticed I missed out on a sale and contacted me inquiring if I wanted to buy his :)
Not recognizing him, I promptly asked Brad about him :D
Kudo's to KrazyKarl and Brad!

Hadn't even remembered that one Dom! I get several per week, it's a regular thing. FWIW, I think we've had 3 instances reported in all our time where there was a problem with someone getting ripped off. Pretty good odds.

Dearth 04-09-2015 08:44 PM

I hate it when I am shipped a package by Scare Canada never know what or if you are going to get your package. Finally got my package 21 days after it was shipped from Toronto

Scare Canada lost the package and did not admit losing it until this week when it was found still sitting at the Toronto airport right where it was left by Scare Canada employees

Lets here it for Scare Canada.....

You can just go onto Canada Post's website and enter the package dimensions, weight and to and from postal codes to get a shipping quote.

Myka 04-10-2015 01:57 AM

Ya I pre-print shipping labels. Takes me 5 mins tops. Way better than waiting for someone at home.

Dearth 04-11-2015 05:23 PM

Was at the airport picking up my order of CuC from J&L and was watching people buying their tickets and was treated to the sight of a man being denied a boarding pass due to his inebriated state in other words he was drunk as a skunk before 10am. He made a quite a fuss but other than calling the Westjet staff sexual names and other less printable terms he was politely but firmly escorted from the airport terminal to a waiting cab and was told to rebook when he was sober.

I never understood the need to drink or do drugs and I never understood why people feel the need to get rip roaring drunk at an airport or on a plane. IMO it's a childish thing to get drunk or stoned. But then that's my opinion

reef-keeper 04-11-2015 06:24 PM

Dearth... We have the same opinion!!! I could never understand the concept of spending my hard earned cash on drugs and alcohol. Leaves me with more cash to spend on my tanks!

Don't get me wrong, I am not afraid of heights, nor of flying.
But I have been beside someone on an airplane that was scared $$tless.
Its possible that the person you saw inebriated so early in the morning, just couldn't fly any other way.
And I am not condoning his choice of lifestyle.

Hmmm, sounds like you sat beside my wife on a flight, lol

Madreefer 04-17-2015 09:26 PM

Been bugging my LFS to bring me in a pair of blue throat triggers for months now.
Hey Bill your fish are here come pick up.
Sweet!
I arrive at store and of course they're struck with ick.
That'll be $403.20 including tax.
I said that its sad that those 2 fish will live their life and die in that $hitty setup as there isn't anyone that'll pay that price. Beautiful pair and Im sickened over this. I got him down to $300. I'm going be thinking about about this for the next two weeks over bottles upon bottles of cervecas and barrels of tequila. Maybe if the ick has cleared up when I get back I may have a couple of way overpriced fish in my tank.

Craigdillman 04-17-2015 09:27 PM

Qt and treat?

I'm it worried bout the ick.
I'm a bad reefer. 15yrs in and have never quarantined and not about to start.
It's the price that bothers me. They're $80 fish

Craigdillman 04-17-2015 09:39 PM

yea that price does suck , but i would assume 90% of fish in fish stores are carrying something and its worth spending 100$ to get a QT set up and start QT new fish, get the LFS to knock 150$ off and QT them yourself google a practice that works for you tank transfer Copper or Hypo and save the fish

Coming back later when the ich is gone doesn't solve anything as the ich just isn't visible

dont feel you have to buy them rather see them passed up then wrecking a Main DT or bringing in ich and killing your own fish

F.H 04-17-2015 10:00 PM

Random thought... but I hate it when you're buying or selling something and people don't communicate like human beings.

It's really not that hard.

Aquattro 04-17-2015 10:05 PM

Someone should start a thread about it..

Oh I've got all the crap. In my basement for quarantine and frag tanks. You name it I have it. I'm just too damned lazy. And I've put fish in my tank totally infested with ick. I have full faith in my ick control. Other diseases I'm worried about. Good idea though. I should prolly get off my ass and set a quarantine tank up.

I had an interesting experience this week.

No details, no names...

Let's just say I now know why there (might be) a blacklist.

Happy reefing people, be nice to each other, and give credit when credit is due.

Why do members still end their threads with "please close", especially the experienced ones ?

Because in the history of the board, we've never closed them, so might as well keep trying. :)

Whew, thought I was going to go nutzo without my Random Thought fix.
Honestly? Sometimes it's the only thing new for me ... late night, early morning can't sleep, nothing to read ... Oh look, a post  (or a squirrel)
Good thing someone is keeping an eye on stuff.

God forbid if someone complained and asked for this thread to be closed ...
