Don't think you'll have any algae problems with that many tangs! Very cool.

That's one way of getting some yellow in the tank. Not many yellow corals so go with nice yellow fish.

How do you keep the tank so clean without any algae!

Thank you.

I do clean the clean front, back and sides, every few days.
sandbed is stirred by a new of critters, and if they get lazy in certain spots I give them a hand.
Water changes, carbon and zeo, and now those tangs pretty much keep the alagae away.

SO i am looking for some ideas for the lighting of my frag area.

Its on the left hand side of the pictures, and the area is 18 x 20 x 8in water depth.

I was first thinking t5s, but then thought about a 150wt mh. then

I seen those vipers 70wt but wasnt sure if they would be worth it or not.

LED did come to mind as well, LOL. pretty much any kind of light came to mind, but i cant nail anything down.

any ideas ???????

lastlight 09-14-2010 06:12 AM

I think some t5s still. Light up every last bit of those frags and make them happy.

What's on the tray in your sump? You curing your frag plugs?

yeah just some Boston aquafarm plugs and disks that i had for a while and once i set up the new system i added them in during the cycle so if they had any p04 it would be dissolved by the time SPS hit the water.

if i go with t5s then it woul dhave to be a 24 in fixture.

BlueTang<3 09-14-2010 12:40 PM

John i see you don't run the lid on your zeo reactor. do you dose the start food and back right into the reactor then instead of fighting to get it in the pump intake?

Did you read on the zeo start 3 yet?

Yeah I took it off as i found it sticking when trying to stir the zeolites, it works way better for stirring now.
I still dose outside the RX to get taken up by the pump.

oh yeah start3, I knew they were going to make this more user friendly,
start2 is pretty easy to overdose, the new biomate seems intresting as well.
I hope its avaible by the december holidays.

Here are two pics, one is a coral I recently picked up, it has a hystrix growing on its tip.

Thanks Tony, I was checking yours out too, it looks sick, when do you think well see water ?

gucci17 09-17-2010 03:29 PM

Hi, just tagging along! Love the tank man!

Did you ever end up deciding on what type of lighting to go with for your frags?

One more question, sorry to derail...I didn't see a fuge in your sump. Do you think they are unneccesary?

Rbacchiega 09-17-2010 08:02 PM

Sweet Jesus this tank has changed since I last saw it.
Still one of my all time favorites.
But my polenta is better....bazinga!

JOEL 09-18-2010 05:23 PM

Hey John

All I can say is wow your tank looks great. This is the first time I see this
thread as It's been a busy summer and have not spent much time on canreef.

Thanks, I did kinda come up with a few ideas for the frag tank, its going to be ghetto for the next little bit until i can come up with something.
So for now its being lite by a viper 70wt MH, and a double hagen glo fixture.
well see how it goes for the next bit, but the curretn frags seem to be reacting positive.

yeah, there is no fuge, I am using the zeovit system and a fuge is not neccessary, I did use one in the past when not on zeo, and I felt that it did help, there were alot of pods and algae to take up nutrients.

I totally don't get this Alton/Polenta joke. Polenta is food?

I'm just pretending it's something perverted and I'm chuckling to myself here.

Alton is the MC for Iron Chef America, and I thought you would make a great MC, and yes Polenta is food.

lobsterboy 09-20-2010 06:37 AM

Hey everyone, abit of an update. so I have been busy with the tank the last few days.
I did something that I thought I would never do, i got a CLAM, me and clams dont have the best relationship, so when one came avaible through another reefer who was living in the same building as me, I thought to give it a try.

Its mounted up high on a rock and off the sand bed in hopes that SPS will kinda crowd it as they both grow, well see what happens :twised:

afews other made the tank this past weekend as well.

monitipora nodosa
green caulastrea
kinda blue green millepora, its still to new to tell which way it will go
crayloa tabletop, which I think is going to go staight green, which would be cool. I have pics, and that one too is dark, but give it two weeks in zeo and well see.

tested the p04 tonight and its down to zero, which I am very pleased as the new tangs have been getting fed everytime I pass the tank.

Kh dosing is 25g and 34g per night.
Ca is a steady go between 42g and 28g per morning.

I am still doing it manually.

ok pictures.

you can kinda see half the clam in this one, as well the nodosa and the cauly
http://i496.photobucket.com/albums/r...000/zeo5-2.jpg
check the clown under the table.
http://i496.photobucket.com/albums/r...000/zeo6-2.jpg

heres the new table, really green from top down.
http://i496.photobucket.com/albums/r...000/zeo4-3.jpg

I took some advice from Leonardo and trying out a green stag frag.

http://i496.photobucket.com/albums/r...000/zeo8-2.jpg
zero.
http://i496.photobucket.com/albums/r...0/IMG_0602.jpg

http://i496.photobucket.com/albums/r...000/zeo9-2.jpg

and a romantic moon lite KH dose.

Thanks Mike, yeah there are 7 yellow tangs, and a single kole tang.
The only aggression from them is when they are packed in a really tight shoal all trying to pick at the same rock. Other than that they are chill.

the tank is 72x24x20

I was looking through an old sketch book last night....and I came across the rough drawing of jesus flying over the calgary tower shooting laser beams out of his hands at angry sharks. Possibly the best unfinished drawing I've ever seen

lastlight 09-24-2010 05:34 PM

No offense John but the only reason I check this thread is to make sure my name's not mentioned haha. Joking!

And for frag's sake pickup your damn t-shirt already. I've cleaned the skimmer cup out with it so many times I'm going to have to launder the damn thing.

Thanks for the info, it made me quite at ease, cause after all those perverted PM's that I receive from you on a daily basis, I am glad that the t-shirt will only have skim mate stains, those ones come out.

and I am surprised that you could even see my thread through all that toner ?
